Being Basic, Borderline Generic?

Alufey

My first project has a really simple storyline. A thief tries to save her friend from a dungeon and along the way finds a plot to assassinate the princess. Its set in a fantasy-esque era, in a way that's similar to a Dungeons and Dragons game, or Final Fantasy game. As a test I think it'll work well, especially with the bare bones and limited knowledge I have thus far of RPG Maker VX Ace.

But I like a touch of flavor to the basic. So the thief is a girl. Her friend is a boy. And the princess, goes from being a Princess Peach sorta gal into Arthas.

No way! I like your plot. :) :) idk, personally i prefer simple ones, and a simple one is good anyway for starting off.

There are tons of amazing and famous TV shows, movies, games, etc., with simple plots. Like Pokemon-- all you do is capture... Pokemon and try to be a master.

Or Skyrim (?) where i'm pretty sure the basic premise is just fighting bad guys.

Or Borderlands, where you also just fight bad guys.

Or Corpse Party (rpgmaker game), where it's just a horror escape game.

Either way, i think your game sounds fun, and i think it's more important how you tell the story than necessarily maybe what it is. :)

I kinda think it doesn't really matter how you set up your plot, the important thing is the characters and the world. If the characters are interesting and the world is fun to explore, that's all that matters. Still no reason why you can't start small and just start going interesting places in the plot from there.

Sometimes you just need a little kick start in your game's story and everything will flow in smoothly :3 simple stories doesn't make a game boring but instead can trigger a grand adventure.

Plot: (Silly plot I made just for fun)

I found a coin where in that coin will be key to the planets survival :3

How complex the plot itself is, isn't that important (Hell, ask Bioware). You can go a long way with just good characters and a deep world. Look at something like Final Fantasy 10. It's about a group of people going to the other side of the world to get an epic summon to kill the evil. Yet it's a super awesome story. It's all about the way you present it.

Personally, I like more story-driven games like Final Fantasy 8 or 9, or Suikoden 2, rather than character-driven ones. But that's just me.

Well thank you guys so much for the input. ^_^

@When Bugs Roam Your House That is true. A well built story often starts simply. One good example I just thought of is the tv show Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The idea is simple, with one strange twist. A cheerleader type slaying vampires. I'm not sure about how great the plot is though ( I personally like it), but hell its a huge pop icon. Pokemon is certainly is enigma, no matter how you look it. The games, the tv shows, etc. Probably because it started with that simple concept as you said. And the fact we all love Pikachu so much. xD

I'm also stoked that you like the idea I have so far.

By the way, ain't it funny that EVERY time you play a Elder Scrolls game, you're in jail? >.<

@KilloZapit That gave me a nice idea. I'll really have to add little surprises here and there. That I think just makes games really enjoyable. What sort of things do you like to find out about characters?

@Kotori-chan Yeah, it feels like as long as there is an idea, then there's almost endless possibility. Like asking how the coin in your example plays a role, is it literally a key? is a weapon? Building is a real process. :)

@Sinathor Umm that FF10. Tidus really is an interesting choice for a hero. One of the constant elements I enjoy about Final Fantasy, is the reuse of ideas. Like the summons. Or moogles. Mario is another concept its simple, but I've wondered how high the development team was. And I nearly died laughing at the uncle Mario in Assassin's Creed 2. xD

Bioware made Star Wars The Old Republic so amazing. I think I'd put a suicide note beside my desk if I had to script all that dialog, and choices. A death of a million key strokes. >.>  I'm not even into Star Wars and I love it because of the interactive story. Do I want dark side points? Hahaha. Maybe.Guild Wars 2 was also entertaining because there was a lot of plot ( hehe ) in the first 20 levels. I can honestly say that I work my tail off for story.

Fire Emblem abuse me please so I can see dialogs. Is what I say. xD

And ooooo~ another person whose a FF9 fan, I have yet to play it myself, but I've been told that its a shame about how little recognition it gets. As a game player, I think that connection to the character is important, but it can be built a lot of ways. Like playing Metroid Prime, I felt connected Samus because the situation was kill or be killed. But I enjoyed Crisis Core, and Zack's character was developed so wonderfully. The end was still devastating even though I expected it.

I'm not criticizing your opinion by the way. x-x There is a ton of ways to do things, I just like anything that's well executed. Or if its just really fun.

I don't think it's a matter of finding things about characters as much as putting them in situations where they find out about themselves. That said it's also fun to give them quirky traits that make them stand out. Like for example, maybe you have a soft spoken healer girl who turns out to be a huge pervert. But you have to do it subtly you know. Like maybe she could secretly glance at the buff male hero's body when treating his wounds, but not acting innocent about it, innocently offering a massage maybe later in the game.

Aha yes I like that. Thank you KilloZapit. That makes it much more juicy. To be able to go along with the character, and share the experience. Nice imagery by the way. I also imagine the hand grope gesture in that healers mind. ^__^
