Screenshot Critique Thread

Welcome to the Official Screenshot Thread. Here you can post any screenshots related to maps, battles, title pages, anything in-game related you believe needs advice. Also, to ensure that you'll get the correct feedback include information regarding what the screenshot is about.

Rules:

You must leave critique on ANY previous screenshot. It DOES NOT have to be the last one you see.

If you have already left feedback on a previous post, but then post your own image to critique. You are STILL required to give feedback to a DIFFERENT screenshot. (I cannot stress this enough ~kayden997)

This is simply due to respect for other developers. It's not exactly hard to leave some advice on a previous post. It is common courtesy. We are all here to help each other, as is the point of this thread.

Basically, to avoid any problems. just leave Critique on a screenshot in the SAME post as your thread. If you want to leave additional Feedback, without screenshots that is brilliant, however you are STILL required to post more if you post a different screenshot.

No random Chit-Chat. A Screenshot isn't required but discussions between two members should be done via PM

Spoiler Large Images.

Wait 30 posts until you repost the same Screenshot.

Do not double post. If no one has replied edit your current post and replace the screenshot

All other Global Rules Apply

If you have any other questions then feel free to PM @Jonnie91 or @kayden997

So I guess I'll go first:

This is a screenshot from mine and Shaddows second game Lullaby. This is a Decision system. The mapping is only a placeholder. It will NOT look like that....Any feedback?

Edit 7/2/13: If you have a series of screenshots you would like critiqued at once (3 or more screenshots), you may create your own topic in this forum and post them there instead of posting them to this thread. If you have less than 3 screenshots ready to be critiqued, then you would continue to use this thread.

Just recently I finished making an overworld map using RPG Maker MV. It has become kind of a hobbie to me. I haven't really made anything else in the software besides using the map editor, I'm sure I can't get a game done on my own. Since you're basically creating pixel art, I started experimenting and creating a few maps on my own.

The video above is a timelapse of a 4 hour process in which I just sat down and "freestyled" a map from scratch on the editor. You'll be able to see how I went from the most basic shapes to detailing and giving the map texture for a very organic look. It may not be pratical for a game, but I think that the ending result turned out great. I want to post it here for anyone wanting to use as reference for future projects given that the process itself is pretty straight forward.

	Howdy howdy~

So, I recently learned how to parallax map, and I've been having loads of fun with it Here's a few maps I made for my project using parallax mapping~

	My main character's hometown:

	And her bedroom:

I've got some mapshots of Catty Lands dungeons (made with Tsukihime's mapshot script). This first one I want to show you is the Catwalk of Aeons, floors 1-7:

The idea with this dungeon is that, while the first two floors are pretty standard, the player then must overcome "four elements" based challenges. There are obstacles that you can only get past by using magic spell items that you would previously buy.

The dangers include dangerous objects, damage floors, hidden pits and one pond in the water level that you will slide into on the ice tiles unless you use magic to freeze it.

The first level contains a pit that you must use a certain kind of spell to cross, and there's a clue as to which you should use.

The air level contains a puzzle in which you have to step on the hexagrams in the correct order to proceed.

The cats on the second level pose riddles which are questions about previous in-game events.

The last floor is simply one where a cutscene happens.

The giant hexagrams are healing spots.

With each floor, the idea was to keep the general style throughout while putting in some of each element.

Finally, I know the doors look like they don't align correctly, but in the actual game they do.

I will post other dungeon maps later.

	Thoughts?

Hello everyone! Well, I have three map screenshots to show you and I would like your feeback. I've been trying to improve them in every possible way, but perhaps you have some suggestions. Well, all these maps are from the same area: The Lortrec Catle. There are more maps in the area, but I would like to rework on them before posting.

So I have been trying to decide if I truly want to convert one of my projects from VX Ace to MV for a bit now. I like the database for MV better along with the stacking on the maps, but I have done so much already with the said project in VX Ace. Below are screen shots, the first few from VX Ace and the others from MV, don't worry they are labeled. Just based off of the screen shots, which do you like better? Also all of the maps were made with the same tile sets.

Hello everyone! I haven't been updating here as much as I'd like, due to retail holiday rush and general cold season rush on top of that. Pharmacy is tiring... (clears throat)

Anyway, I wanted to do a small project as a personal challenge: no parallax mapping. Only use the mapping process in VXACE to make the game and see how it would turn out. The theme of the mapping is a small, simplistic place that only has what the 9 inhabitants need to make them feel comfortable. There's a big outdoor focus on small parks and simplicity, without clutter and with the river running throughout the town.

I'm working on the demo, and when the demo is finished I'll make a proper page for the game, but:

At the moment, how do these look? Any thoughts or constructive criticism will be greatly appreciated! I'm using Pixel Myth Germania set as the main mapping set for the Town, which is the bulk of these screenshots. Sprites are my creations using the Game Character Hub.

Hello everyone. I'm developping a game called "The legends of Saneterre - the fall of the angels".

I would like to have some input on my maps.

The first one is a world map of a floating island.

I have a few parallax maps I'd like critique on, I currently have no use for them except examples for my level of mapping. Over the maps, I have some lighting that can be put in games as overlays; I have two different kinds of light, outdoor and indoor. Outdoor's style is based on the top left corner with beams of light, as well as darkness surrounding the edges to create a contrast effect (based partly off of Echo607's lighting tutorial). Indoor's style has a dark overlay with low-opacity erasing where light comes from (windows, lights, and doorways), as well as a few beams and 'lighting fogs' as I call them (low opacity yellow or white over the light source). Here they are.

The forest map, my first and probably best because I spent the most time and effort on it. The things I personally dislike or would criticize are the mix of RPG Maker grass and GIMP-brushed grass (all the same color, not pixel art-styled) and the lighting's lack of subtlety, though I'm not sure exactly how to fix that, and since it's an old map it'd be a major pain to fix the first issue.

Night:

EDIT: Using some awesome tips from one of the commenters, I have a different night sample of the forest. It had a different light type, slightly tweaked fireflies, and a yellow overlay set on subtract for the blue effect (I'll be using the other, more time-consuming suggestions for later maps and/or when I have more time).

Here's the indoor map. I felt like I didn't put in as much time or effort on this one, and the non-overlay lighting could sue some work. I didn't find many specific issues with this one, it just felt sub-par.

This is a newer version with slightly different lighting (beams of light instead of an overuse of 'lighting fog'; I kind of forgot to do light beams on the lamp, though):

Here's a newer map, too! It's definitely my best (in my opinion). I hope you like it too; share any feedback you have for me.

The day version of the map; I feel like it needs something to compete with the night map, but I'm not sure what. I liked the night map a little more, though this one's more simple.

Night version. I liked the contrast and enchanted feel of the pond, though the map's light felt a little excessive for just moonlight. What should I do about that while keeping dramatic and positive effects?

Hi guys! I'm a beginner here in the forum and just recently started messing around with RPG Maker. I'm looking for some feedback on the maps I created for a "murder mystery" game (inspired by Agatha Christie/Sherlock Holmes stories). For the most part I used the standard tileset with a few additions here and there. The light effects were made using Khas Awesome Light Effects.

For my game, I've been using a mish-mosh of tilesets (mostly Celianna's brillancy, with some RTP stuff thrown in as well) and working on the maps for the main town. These three are my favorites (so far) that I've made. I really just want some feedback on what I'm doing right, what I'm doing wrong, what I should improve on or get rid of entirely, etc. Any CC would be appreciated!

The "Demon Realm" is just going to be one map in my game, but it will be the most otherworldly so I'd like to get feedback on the graphics. I'm trying to go for alien/creepy/beautiful. I don't need comments on the actual mapping right now, I'm just seeing how the graphics look in various combinations. You can't tell from these screenshots but some of the plant life (?) changes color or flickers with light. Thanks for any input.

Let me know what you think! (Also, being the newbie I am, the base map was the Merchant Hall F1 sample map... I generally make my maps based off of the sample maps... Probably a very amateur and/or newbie thing to do.)

Messing around with the Old School modern tilesets!

I've recently got the old school modern tileset so I've decided to play around with it a bit, maybe even begin a small adventure game! I made a small kind-of-post-apocalyptic mining town map and a couple others.

I'm working on a new game project based on Creepypasta stories about Lavender Town from Pokémon Red and Blue Versions. I am even using the graphics from Pokémon Red/Blue. All I need is a menu system and battle system that replicates the actual Pokémon Red/Blue games (if possible). I am accepting help with my game project so if anyone knows if it's possible to create a battle system and menu system that looks like the original Pokémon Red/Blue games and if you want to help with the project, please let me know.

Here are the Screenshots so far:

Hi! I don't have much maping skills, i end up never liking the maps i make, so i tried to try new things to make it look better. Since there are a lot of effects i think it's better to show a video instead of a screenshot:

VIDEO

I never liked how your character was stopped by the roof of a tile, so i used a image to do the wall and made it lose opacity when they needed to see things

i also don't like how stairs look, i used shadows to fix that.

The tiles looked plain so i used my video editor to change everything

I also tried to make illumination effects, using light images as light and changing the screen depending of how much lights you have.

The problems is loading everything. i would have to make a script call asking if image manage is ready to fix that. But i don't know how heavy this metod of mapping using images will be at long terms (if the game will be heavy or will freeze a lot). Also because i used a lot of events. I will try to use perfect colision plugin (that detects if pixel collide) to see what i can do to simplify things.

Did you like what i did to the walls? Do you think is a bad idea to use images to make maps (long term lag and size my be problems)? Do you have any suggestions to improve it? What did you think about the light system (i'll have to tweak that later if i use day and night systems)? Do you know any plugin that would help? Any suggestions about the house?

OBS: the house is on a small size because i used animations on the light (if i used a big map it would be bugged with the animation system)

EDIT: pixel movement may be a problem for this too, since in some cases the actor will walk bellow a image .
