Hai hai everybody! I'm a brand new Twitch streamer and I'd like to promote/play some indie games on my channel during some of my stream times.

I will play anything. Any genre, however.......I do favor some genres over others. I like RPGs (any type even oldskool!), Simulation, and Horror games most. I tend to like action/adventure, epic, scary, and science fiction elements. I am not fond of slice of life or romance generally, unless it comes with other story elements, or is done extremely well mechanically (like Harvest Moon, which has just enough plot and excellent mechanics to be a good sim despite being totally slice of life-ish - basically sandbox games are great! I just don't like the petty drama/romance stuff like in those types of animu - pretty sure you know what I mean. lol) since the genre alone is boring/annoying for me. XD But I will play them regardless!

I'm going to do these in the order that I receive them. No exceptions. I don't want to play favorites. ^ u^

Longer and shorter games both accepted. I just may break up the longer games into multiple streams.

I don't have a regular streaming schedule due to my disabilities. But I'll try to do one day a week (the day may vary) dedicated to these indie games. And at LEAST bi-weekly guaranteed. :3

Ask any questions here. And start flooding me with your best works!

Do you have a game that you're interested in having played? Do you like someone who goes through the work you made with a sense of reaction and detail? Do you want to join a small community that is slowly growing? Look no further-Aurabolt's stream is for you.

I'm looking for new games-I prefer RPGs, but I am also open to other genres and interesting stories, as well as your suggestions for other titles-and due to my connection on Discord-as well as my own server-I am slowly building up a community of awesome people.

Here's a small example, with a spoiler warning: My initial reactions to the ending of Legends of Illarion 2. I'm also currently playing Wooden Ocean, Gaiken, and the first Legends of Illarion!

If you're interested, feel free to PM me with your game or any recommendations. I would be happy to add you to my Discord Server. Looking forward to your game and your addition to your cool community!
Edit: If you're looking for another clip, here's one:
Here's me defeating a Superboss in Ephiam's Chronicles of Tsufanubra. We believe it was overpowered, but I sensed an opening.

Hey everyone, I’m a moderator for a Let’s Player, named Hard_Reset, who is doing something new! He
not only plays through your game from start to finish, but he also does it live so you can watch, along
with others.

This provides on opportunity for you to explain mechanics or see exactly where bugs or glitches occur.

You can have the stream up while watching and get live feedback on your project. Another benefit is
that the community is growing and other viewers can provide suggestions so it’s like a Quality Assurance
meeting!

He works with you to set up times that are convenient for you to be able to watch the live stream and
then puts out announcements so the community knows when a stream will happen as well. After a few
days, the stream is then uploaded to Youtube so you can have an archive to help with fixes, it’s also just
another avenue for you game to get exposure.

If this is something that interests you, the best way to get your game on the list to be streamed would to
join the Hard_Reset Discord: https://discord.gg/qyBjxEg

Just message Hard Reset when you have a project ready to be streamed. Whether it’s a demo or a full
commercial release, he will play it until it’s over. Games are streamed on a first come, first serve basis
to keep things fair. Hope to see you in stream and in the discord!

About

I'm usually a retro game streamer on Twitch. And, during my free time when I'm not helping develop games or doing work for clients, I like to relax and share my game playing experiences on Stream.

What do I play? RPG Maker Games.

Why? Because they're usually light, entertaining, don't take to long, and they don't get too slowed down when I try to stream them.

Requests?

Lay them on me. I'll take requests to play a game you made or a game someone else has made. What seems interesting to me will take priority.

To make a request, leave me a link to its topic on the forums for either the Show Room or Masterpiece Theater.

After playing around with Camtasia Studio for a bit, I realized that I should actually be doing something worth it. So I came to the conclusion of trying my hand at the infamous Let's Play/Try scene. I'll admit I have never had to do this before, so I'll probably be nervous as hell. But it's pretty nice to review games in the format of video, and I've always been drawn to it, and now it's my chance to make it shine.

With that being said, though, if you want some feedback for your game, I'm not going to say no. Just be sure to:

--Leave a post here with a link to your game.

--Specify what kind of platform it is (RPG Maker XP, VX, and Ace games only (EDIT: I'm willing to make an exception for IGMC since I refreshed myself that IGMC is any platform, but this will be the only time)) so I can get the appropriate RTPs.

--NO ABSs GAMES. ABSs in RPG Maker are horribly optimized, which makes recording a pain. It's already enough of a struggle to play the game at 2 FPS with your stupid ABS, don't make me record it as well.

--NO HORROR GAMES. It's not anything against you, or anything against the engine that it's used in, but horror games in general are terrible by my standards, mostly because of many things. Most people don't really have the same "experiences" that they have in real life when they go to make a horror game, so they can't really establish a connection between with what's "scary" or, what's supposed to flow correctly in this scenario or how it's supposed to play out. Which usually ends up with either lots of needlessly graphic gore and violence, or something that just isn't concrete. Again, it's nothing personal, but when I look at all of the RPG Maker horror games, 99% of the time, they aren't concrete enough for my tastes, or I'm left confused at what is going on. Or there's excessive amounts of violence in it. Which is a no-no.

--NO BACKSEAT GAMING! A.K.A. DON'T TELL ME HOW TO PLAY YOUR fricking GAME. LET ME FIGURE IT OUT FOR MYSELF. THAT PISSES ME OFF.

--Please tell me before hand if your game is a demo or a complete game. Demos of games are considered Let's Tries (unless they're mere moments away from actual release), and complete games will get a Let's Play. (There is a difference between the two.)

--Just to be warned, I can get pretty intense with my critique, and if your game looks like there was no care put into it, I won't care in return. If you can't handle criticism/ranting very well, look somewhere else.

--THIS IS GOING TO BE DIFFERENT THAN THE ONE ON THE MAIN SITE. Only games featured here will be Let's Played exclusively to this site. If you want it to be featured on the main site, you can visit this thread to suggest your game.

Just to make sure that I'm not swamped with games that I can't complete, I'll only allow 5 games to be LP'd at any one time. This makes it easier on me because it's organized and that I don't forget whose game belongs to who. The list will go at the top of the thread.

Lastly, leave a thank you. You have no idea how much a simple thank you makes me feel enthused.

THE CALIFORNIA MACKY

So I decided I'd go and begin Let's Plays of a few games. I'm still building banners and stuff, but yeah. I'll do let's Plays and Let's Reads. I'll post links to my channel once I have RPG Maker vids uploaded.
I'll be making a few short episodes of some of the games in the RPG Maker community.

Now, I have a list here, but you're welcome to make suggestions and recommendations. Whether I make video Let's Plays of them or not depends on how smooth it will run on my computer, and if the game itself will have copyrighted material (That involves ripped songs or sprites from other games. I know it's hard to gather resources, but we gotta respect original creations.). I can write a written review by request for your game, too (regardless of copyrighted material), and maybe a quick video review instead of a Let's Play. All links will be provided in this main post so just look into this one for the lists.

The focus of my channel was intended for dating sims: gay, straight, and lesbian, or whatever there is, and it's because they run smoothly on my pitiful system. But then I remembered how RPG Maker can be powerful while using smaller rounds of RAM and VIdeo Memory. Plus stories tend to be unique and diverse. SO! I am aiming to promote RPG games and good stories to the world of Youtube.

So here's the list of the RPG Maker games that will begin and be ongoing soon. I'll probably plan five every month or so, depending on my free time. (These include games from similar programs like Wolf RPG Maker):

Don't be too afraid to recommend a long RPG game. I pretty much grew up with RPG's (I was a Pokemon and Final Fantasy baby).

Developer: LusterMX

Genre: Fantasy RPG

Current Status: Complete

Approximate Play Time: 26 Hours

OVERVIEW:

As my daughter would say: “Holy Guacamole!†Yeah, for a 12-hour game, 26 hours just seems… well… a bit of an overkill, but that was the time I clocked in at after finishing my own recent playthrough. Not to mention, having died a few times against some of the bosses, I’d wind up speeding through the repeat cut scenes leading up to the boss fight on a revisit… and I only wound up completing about 1/3 of the total quests. So add to the missing clock, and I’m probably looking at something more along the 30+ hour mark.

Just grinding to complete the skill charts alone seemed to take a lot of time and endurance; and remembering which monsters dropped which items to complete whichever quests were still remaining would seem to take an even longer time. But I digress, since in no way does my comment about the oddity between my own completion time and the developer’s suggested time impact my opinion for this game, and the fact that I spent so much time exploring its world should be enough to entice others looking to play a lengthy adventure.

STORY & WRITING:

Normally, I prefer to talk about the game play first; but in this instance, I felt it was necessary to get the weakest part of the game out of the way which, sadly, happens to be the story. The reason being, if a person has almost zero investment into the story, most likely they’re not going to enjoy the game.

Now, I don’t think the story was by any means terrible; in fact, the plot was pretty good. But there is a large difference between a decent plot, and executing that plot in the way of writing. The premise behind the game is that Falk wants to be a hero; he’s your comical character throughout, and most times winds up creating more work for the team to handle than had he left things alone to begin with. You spend the first few hours of the game in and around your home town, completing quests, and trying not to get into (too much) trouble. Then a mysterious book happens to fall into his possession, which he thinks belongs to another student because, Lord forbid he’d be caught reading a book. Soon after, his best friend Tash winds up missing, and nobody but him and another student remembers her.

Somehow, I doubt he’s the intended hero, regardless of what he may think.

Tash, meanwhile, has been whisked off to some odd dream-like plane, where she meets up with a mysterious character called Fate. And from here, the two parties wind up going on several adventures before they wind up together near the last act of the game.

Be forewarned, that while the episode itself is complete, the story is not, and LusterMX has a sequel in mind; though when that sequel will be released is anybody’s guess. This is the first point against the story; it takes so long to get anywhere, and when it seems things are finally coming around, you are treated to the “Blurred Line†approach of the promise of a sequel that may never come around (Please refer to “A Blurred Line†and it’s vaporware “Line’s End†on RMN for further reading).

The second point against the story is the amount of misspellings, odd grammatical choices, and the fact that the game (as has been stated in other reviews I’ve read) can’t decide what type of story it wants to tell. Is it dark, is it light, is it serious, or a comedy? It tries to be everything it possibly can, and often winds up even more confused as a result.

The end to what? The game? Already?... Oh, now I get it, you meant to say “innâ€.

I enjoy comedy in an rpg, and there are some instances where this plays off well, especially in the beginning. But all too often the jokes run dry, the text speeches and symbols in place of swear words take over, and the characters become way too involved with their own personalities that it leaves me with a bitter taste in my mouth, kind of like drinking a mouth-watering ice cold beverage on an extremely hot day and having the after taste of something like dish soap.

There were times I laughed out loud…

At least it’s better than killing slimes.

… and then there were times I shook my head in confusion. But even with all this going on, I still forced myself to play through it, and one scene in particular, near the end of the game, will stay with me as one of the best cut scenes I’ve seen in an RPG Maker game in a long while. Eventually, the game becomes a bit more serious as it nears the final act, and by the time you are fully invested, it’s over.

My rate for Story is 5/10. The characters were funny at times, but annoying at others. The plot was intriguing, but wound up taking second place over the antics of our wanna-be heroes, all of whom seemed to be operating against one another. While it’s refreshing to see the challenges in a party of heroes where nobody really gets along with one another, it might have worked better without trying to minimize the seriousness of the game’s plot.

GAME PLAY & COMBAT:

So if you’re still with me, then perhaps it’s because you’ve decided you can stomach the story long enough to actually enjoy the game, and for that I’d say you’re in for a real treat. The game is massively engaging, and one of the reasons I spent so much time playing it was because of how immersive the game play is. Right away, you’re going to see the game offers a bit of the standard features you’d expect in a well detailed game, from a quest log to a diary, from a skill tree to side-view battles, and from a heavy amount of exploration to a variety of sub quests and treasure hunts.

A monster guide that would have told us what drops what would have also helped, but I won’t complain… too much.

But what really makes this game shine are the amount of gadgets you get that allow you to explore even deeper; these things remind me a bit of Wild Arms and Breath of Fire, where tools allowed you to delve further into the game and open up new secrets in areas you may have previously explored. The first gadget you get (several hours in) is a pair of goggles that will allow you to detect hidden items. Later on, you get a shuriken you can use to get out of reach treasure and switches, followed by what’s called a Zippo that lets you move super fast and break through some obstacles, and finally another pair of goggles that detects traps.

Now you’re playing with Power!

I’ve spent so much time revisiting some areas because of the new gadgets. This doesn’t even begin to cover the dungeon designs, some of which had challenging puzzles; the best one was the switch puzzle that controlled the bomb in another section. And of course, once the parties come together, and new characters join, you wind up with a total of 11 characters by the game’s end, each one with their own unique abilities. Usually I pick a team I like and stay with them, but I was switching them all back and forth so many times because they all offered something of value depending on the area you were exploring. It also helped playing as separate parties for awhile so you didn’t feel as if you were ever stuck with one character who was severely under-leveled.

All that said, there were a few annoyances in my play through, the largest being it was hard trying to figure out what items were necessary for every quest, and rare items were so rare that it made it difficult to do the quests I wanted to do. Regular enemies were often way too easy, but the boss battles usually revolved around strategy more so than levels, giving it a nice touch. The other thing that was a bit on the dry side, you’ll play through the same forest in the beginning area of the game multiple times before getting to advance the story any further, simply because of all the quests you have to do at various times. By the third run through the forest, I was getting tired of the layout.

My rate for Game Play is 8.5/10. Minor issues aside, it is chalk full of well designed game play mechanics and dungeon-based puzzles, so much that it even allows for some replayability if you discover you’ve missed something along the way, or have traded something for one quest over another.

RESOURCES & LEVEL DESIGN:

The resources here aren’t anything really new, and most of the game’s music have been pulled from other games along the way. However, overall the resources were handled well. LusterMX knows what chords work best in relation to the area the player is in or the scene, and ranges from happy and energetic to moody and sulking.

The area that I think deserves the most praise, however, is the mapping, and playing through this game helps a person to easily forget they are playing a VX game. And like Luchino and her Enelysion game, I believe most of the maps were made in the editor without special parallax gimmicks. There were a few areas that seemed to clash in design, but nothing too drastic…

Silly me. Forget the fact that a tree was somehow growing over the bridge to begin with, but seeing as the tree has already been cut, do you think maybe we could just jump over the durn thing?

… and the amount of detail that went into each map, along with the proper touch of lighting effects, created a very tranquil atmosphere that drove me further into exploring the game’s world.

My rate for Resources is 8/10. Nothing very original, but handled with much care and respect.

Game Overall Rating & Final Thoughts: 7.16/10

If only we could do something to clean up the story, otherwise this is a very solid rpg. So much attention has been put into the game’s atmosphere and level designs and game play mechanics, and it pays off well. Here’s hoping LusterMX hasn’t given up on the sequel.

Status of the Long Play: It's done, yo.
Length of the Long Play: Well, there are 20 parts averaging 1-2 hours per part in most cases, so I'd say probably 30 hours total.
Status of the Game of the Long Play: Complete.

A Brief Description of Your Thoughts:
Earthbound absolutely blew my mind when I picked it up brand spanking new for my 13th birthday. Then I went into the hospital for appendicitis. BUT then I got out and beat the game! This is actually going to be a 3 part endeavor, because I'm presently working on a Mother 3 playthrough, then I'm going back to finish up Earthbound Zero.

Flailcast is an offshoot of Drunkcast, where I play games and drink. However, as I'm actually trying to cut back (and failing), I've decided to have Flailcast take over as the official title, as I flail about and try very hard to look like an expert and remain topical...horribly...and often go off into weird tangents (ESPECIALLY if I've been drinking).

Bottom line, I had a lot of fun making this. Most of the time I do quicker games or one offs, but I wanted to also have longer LPs that I was working on so someone could come and binge watch from time to time.

Download

Edit: ...and I just realized this was specific for RPG Maker games, which I'm happy to do, but shoot.

I've been a user of many different incarnations of the RPG Maker series for many years, so I know the limits of the program. I'll try to give honest and constructive feedback on your material, even if it may be harsh sometimes, but you'll know my reactions in real-time to the actual playing of the game. Leave any recommendations in the comments, and chances are I'll add it to the list to play. I'll probably accept (even demos) anything except comedy/parody games, as humor is always subjective. I'm particularly looking out for games that break away from the tradition jrpg formula, or not even an rpg at all, but any kind is welcome! Also keep in mind that I may not update frequently due to me doing this in my free time. Anyway, here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCb_Fg90M1HaHcsItBCAk0IA/feed

30 Minutes With RPG Maker

Hello there. I'm working on a series of first look videos called 30 Minutes With RPG Maker. Basically I just play RPG Maker games for around 30 minutes with no commentary from myself to let you guys see what the game is like.

Feel free to check out the playlist. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLs_oqhuxYit3VZtlccIkkul1JUOdMcUrA

Hey there!

I've decided to open myself to playing other games that people have made! Whether it's long, short, just a demo, or even incomplete, I'll give it a try. I will give my thoughts on the game in the video description, and I will do my best not to sugarcoat anything.

The reason why I've chosen to do Long Plays over everything else is because I like to personally enjoy games. That, and I'm no good at commentary.

Please note that I'm an amateur at video editing, and that the first Long Plays I record will be a learning process for me. I ask that you bear this in mind if you'd like me to play your game!

Without any further ado, please supply me with requests. First come, first serve!

Edit: My apologies, sacrifyx, I'm taking a break from this for now. I'll post one more part soon and then likely wrap up this particular series.

Gameplay

The Gameplay for Akage is about how the sexy and charming lady who is named 'Akage', slash her way to the culprit who burned her whole village, and her beloved house. Basically, the game showcases the battle system of Sapphire. The game is then spiced up with a system wherein you may enchant mana stones into your equipment. There are various Mana Stones which raises a certain type of attribute. The game also emphasizes on the use of potions to withstand hard battles. My only suggestion would be, maybe add a hotkey wherein you may link items which you would want to use there. I had to open and close the menu to use a potion in my inventory whenever there would be a boss battle.

The game also offers several weapons and scrolls, which I found entertaining since picking up such items made me feel rewarded from all the killing Akage has done. I felt stronger and stronger everytime I encountered an item stronger than what I had.

Story

The story is simple, The Bad Guy burns her house and she chases after the Bad Guy. There were no complications or such which was made. The story was straightforward, considering it was a short game.

Resources Used

No additional resources was used, background music and system interfaces stay the same and not that much customization. The only additional resource which I spotted are the use of the characters Bust Shots.

I say that it was a good idea adding those in the game. It added to the feel of the game and the art which Akage had has charmed me since it is simply how art was like on the olden days. Good job

Overall

I think the game was made just for experimenting purposes. Overall, the game would be satisfactory for a short game, but lacks a lot, so I'll give it a 6.5/10.

That's all I have to say and happy game developing.

Author: Kaelan

Topic Link

Gameplay

Red Hand of Doom is a game wherein the mouse is more involved than the keyboard, basically a point and click game. It mimicks the gameplay of an MMORPG, wherein skills would be binded to hotkeys and such.

What I enjoyed on Red Hand of Doom is that you are given the opportunity to customize your character any way you like and I tell you that I truly enjoyed this feature of the game. From picking what class, picking what race, specific stats to raise, feats to learn and characteristics to choose. This feature makes you have full control over the growth of your character. A big thumbs up for that.

What I dislike is the difficulty and the lack of cutscenes in the game. Like directions on what to do and what quests to take. consequences if i do this and i do that. We do not have any information or any hint of at least the best choice to pick. On the other hand, the difficulty is absurd for the first boss of the game. Just one wrong choice and you'll definitely lose the battle.

The presence of a lot of bugs got me stop playing the game. The easy combat mode is rather buggy. You might want to take a look at the heal spell for the cleric, since whenever you hover your mouse there whenever you would want to use it, the game crashes. Similiar to the fear spell, I do not know but when I am about to cast fear, the game crashes again. This is on easy combat though, the bug I found on the normal mode is that if you have already casted fear on the opponent, once you try to cast it again, the game would crash. So fix every bug which is present as quick as possible because how are we going to go further through the game if there are a lot of bugs.

And the lack of details on some options, for example, Coup De Grace/bull rush, they suddenly popped out on the menu without any nice explanation whatsoever. What would be the advantage of using such and how to trigger/use it.

Overall, I still enjoyed the game and the battle system a lot but the bugs would definitely kill the mood. I did not only encounter bugs once, twice, thrice but at least 20x. Which is truly disappointing.

Story

The story is a bit confusing, what if the player did not read your history, lore and such on your thread. Then they would have a hard time understanding the game. And again, I have not ventured through the game much since the bugs have been slowing me down so that is all I have to say for now.

Resources Used

Everything which was used strayed far away from the default RTP style. This just shows how creative the creator of the game is and how he is willing to be different from the others. Everything used was neat and simple, Interfaces were very fancy and had me going. I was so amazed on how you were able to create such a game. Honestly, this is my first time seeing this type of game on RMVXA and I applaud you for that.

Music fitted well for this type of game and I could say that every piece of music was used right where they should be.

My only complaint would be that the sprites I guess do not show much detail and they are just accustomed to one move set as far as I have observed or is it just that I don't notice their other move sets at all.

Overall though, a big thumbs up for originality.

Overall

For the demo's current condition, I would give it a 5/10 as it is not that playable yet since a lot of bugs are still present and there may be rebalances which could still be made but the game has the potential to reach a 10/10.

In fact, you just showed all the game developers out there the potential which RMVXA could have. You proved to everyone out there that RMVXA is a powerful tool and could do such marvelous things. Good Job.

I hope you continue on developing the game as I would be waiting for it to be completed. Maybe once bugs has lessened, I might play it again. Again, good job, and happy game developing

Game Title: Shadow

Author: Zeone013

Topic Link

Gameplay

Shadow is a game with horror as its genre. Most people wont even try to play such games but once discovered to be enjoyable, a possible door to play such games might open. I myself, disliked this type of games at first, why? I was avoiding being scared, being shocked or anything which might draw fear, but I started to enjoy such jumpscares since it only indicates that the game has potential. I had a few jumpscares with the game, my only problem is, it lacks flavor. The game does not have any other way to scare the players but simply by playing sound effects which has its volume on high.

A lot of sentences were structured poorly and might cause for the player to lose his focus on the game. for example, "I'm a Shadow" and "I'm just want to go back". So it is a "Shadow" and it is also a "just want to go back"? such things matter so I suggest you fix most of the grammatical errors.

I also had no idea where I was going, I had to go through every part of the house, wandering aimlessly. You had some messages wherein we would have to go to a certain place, for example, the bathroom. Well, we do not know where that is so such message would be pointless, together with having such small vision on the place where everything appears black unless near the candle which we are holding. I suggest before telling the story, have a scene wherein the protagonist would be wandering around the house first, showing every room so that the players would then have the idea to where he/she may search.

The environment was dull, I had nothing to interact with except with the notes which we are supposed to find. No bgm/bgs was playing while the game was progressing, bgs would only play when a certain event would be executed, bgm would be played only at the climax of the game. I suggest you add in bgs like dripping of water from the faucet, random whispering sounds while walking, footsteps, creaking sound and such and if it would be accompanied with a fitting background music, I assure you it would have a big impact on the gameplay.

SPOILER ALERT

I found a glitch in the game wherein, if I am already to encounter the shadow and once he has finished speaking with me. He was supposed to chase me, and yes, he did. But nothing happens once it has already caught up with me. you better fix that since speeding up the protagonist's speed would make no sense then.

Story

The story was a bit interesting. I like how you have foretold the story at the Introduction. A few grammatical errors were my problem and sentences wherein it would not fit such situations. example, when the protagonist is speaking with the so called shadow, as if they were only friends. Protagonist:"Who are you", Shadow:"I am your shadow",Protagonist:"You wrote the notes?",Shadow:"Yeah". It made me sort of lose my focus on the game and I started laughing. So appropriate dialogues on the certain situations must be used to be able to tell the story the best way you can.

Resources Used

There were no additional resources which was used, I suggest the use of flashing pictures or additional sound effects which are not in the RTP. These would surely contribute to the feel of the game, trust me. The more unexpected things are, the more the mind would think, and the more chances to be surprised.

Overall

Overall, if the games ending was to be how it ended in the game. I guess I would give it a 6/10 since it has not been fully polished and many improvements may still be made.

I played the game a lot of times just to get to the right ending, and for me, the ending was not satisfying and it seemed like the story was not complete. So I must be searching for more since the game has its potential and the story could be interesting if it is going to be progressing on the right way.

Anyway, good job, and happy game developing

Hello everyone! I joined last month and at the time, a friend and I started a LP/Creepy Pasta/Review Channel. It kind of made me become inactive with a few things, but I do check the forums now and then and chat with a few via skype XD. Anyway...

Game Title: Enelysion – Halcyon Days

Developer: Luchino

Genre: Fantasy RPG

Current Status: Complete

Approximate Play Time: 11.5 Hour

OVERVIEW:

Enelysion is one of those games that doesn’t seem to get as much recognition as it truly deserves. It’s a great outstanding game that really pushes the maker to its limits in both game play and mapping, and really helps to show just how powerful RPG Maker can be when placed in the hands of a confident and competent developer. The fact that this game is open to the public (not encrypted) means that RM users can easily see just versatile the maker can be. Even more impressive is that this game is made using the VX editor, and the mapping appears to be done with tiles versus parallax, but still manages to impress in ways I was not expecting.

GAME PLAY:

It’s probably best to get the issues out of the way. The game has its share of problems, lots of them, some of them game breaking. That’s unfortunate in what could have easily been a perfect game. Also, it should be noted that, as of yet, the story is far from over. While the game itself is listed as “completeâ€, it’s really the first part. Luchino is back to work on the second installment, so fingers crossed he eventually finishes this one up.

Okay, so back to the problems. The game is full of bugs, more than I can probably count. If you’re not careful, some of these will mess up your game, and you’ll have to reload a previous save (if you have one). Sometimes you can trigger a cut scene multiple times that should have only been triggered once. Many of your key items, required to progress further into the game, can be sold. If you sell a key item and wind up needing it at a vital dungeon later on, tough luck… you’ll either need to start from the last save or start the whole game over. A hidden merchant in one town will sell you Elixirs… for free.

These are only some of the game gliches I came across on my journey. And now that I’ve addressed the major concerns, what about the game’s highlights?

Exploration! As you can see above, it took me about 11.5 hours to play through the game, although Luchino remarks an approximate 8-hour timeframe, and I even heard somebody playing it through in about 5 hours. I can’t help to wonder if some people are speeding through this game without so much as a thought, but to really enjoy this game I recommend taking your time and looking everywhere (at least for your first playthrough).

The environment you are thrust into is full of places to explore and loot. From the moment you step out of your house, you’re given a pretty extensive world map to roam through. While major scenes and dungeons still follow a more linear path, there are a lot of optional places to visit that serve to expand upon the mysteries surrounding this game and the world around you.

Combat is surprisingly very fresh in this game, and quite challenging. But it’s also very well balanced, too. If you can work out the strategy that works the best, you’ll have a much easier time. Don’t hack through your moves and give each attack careful consideration.

You also have access to enemy stats, strengths, and weaknesses right away in battle. Use the Shift key to open up this section. The best part is, it doesn’t use up any moves, making it much easier to strategize your commands.

My rate for Game Play is 5/10. If it were not for the bugs, I’d give the rating for Game Play a solid 10. The game offers a lot of wonderful mechanics, the combat is quick and exciting, and there’s so much to see and do. The problem is, being able to see and do everything the game has to offer is often hindered by glitches that the player won’t see coming. Save everywhere you can, but make sure to keep a few old save files on hand in case you wind up stuck.

STORY:

Where the game lacks in game play (as a result of unnecessary bugs) it more than makes up for in both story and visuals. The story here does take a bit of time to get going, but once it does it becomes a roller coaster ride of twists and turns. One of the best features this game has is it doesn’t attempt to shove everything down the player’s throat. The player is encouraged to visit all the local areas and discover the lore of the world for themselves, but it is their choice to do so. Even the intro of the game (which is the only area that felt a bit like an info dump) is handled cleverly well so the reader doesn’t feel as if he’s trying to play a game of catch-up.

There are a lot of dark mysteries surrounding the world in this game, many of which have yet to go resolved. Politics play a key part, as do various races you’ll encounter throughout the game. Every NPC seems to have a story to tell, and every one of the characters in your party feel personable.

While the game does fall prey to a few clichés (your main heroine – hey, at least it’s a girl – is an orphan who will begin to discover dark secrets about her past), most of these clichés are handled very well.

My rate for Story is 9/10. A bit slow at first, but really picks up midway. It’s very well written, and it’s obvious the developer really spent time planning the story out.

ATMOSPHERE:

And this, I think, is one of the best reasons to play this game. It’s just so mind numbingly beautiful. The mapping is superb! Every one of the visuals just felt so glorious. Dark and dangerous caverns felt menacing, ancient shrines felt relaxing, towns felt welcoming. Even the music fit the tone of the game very well with its Celtic touch. I was surprised at how well Enya’s music could fit so well into this game, and she is one of my all-time favorite singers.

The visuals and audios are enough to stir emotions while you’re playing this game. For that reason, I could sit and explore the entire game without ever getting bored. Light effects are used appropriately well (never abused), and as I stated above, Luchino managed to do this with the editor (as in tile-based mapping, no parallax from what I can tell).

That’s not to say it’s perfect. There are some passability errors, and it’s not always easy to tell where a path will take you to the next screen or just the edge of the screen, especially if it’s cluttered. However, these are just minor observations, and did not impact my ability to enjoy this game.

As noted in the screen shot above, some mistakes are apparent in the map. Part of the tree is missing a tile, and the path that looks like it goes to another screen doesn’t.

My rate for Atmosphere is 9/10. Maybe I’m a bit biased on this, but I really do think that new users can learn a lot just from looking at Luchino’s maps. Even in the editor, without the special light effects, there is much knowledge to be had.

Game Overall Rating & Final Thoughts: 7.7/10

For such a near-perfect game, it’s too bad that some will be turned off because of all the bugs. It’s very well written and very well detailed, and probably one of the best free RPG Maker games I’ve come across. Unfortunately, it’s story still remains incomplete at this time.
