  1. Sigh...I'm in a puzzle drought. Where the only thing stopping me from progressing is my inability to think up more adventure puzzles. Nnnng.

How about a large scale dungeon, separated into 4 distinct quadrents (Such as one being overgrown with lush flora, while another being rugged and rocky, with crevasse and stalagmites. In each of these sections, there is an odd keystone of a different color, and in the center of the 4 sections, there is a doorway that can be opened by placing the keystones in a certain order, which is hinted at by hidden messages that can be found in the respective section.

Then again, I suppose this is more of a dungeon idea than a puzzle idea, but perhaps it will help you think of something! :)

Perhaps find and gather all the shards to a larger crystal, which you would have the base for elsewhere. Take all the pieces to the base and interact with it to reconstruct the crystal and open the passage?

    Start small or go big?

The classic trouble new people seem to have with starting large projects on the get-go is recognition. It gets to us all--it takes too long to make a demo, and you start questioning why you even bother creating the game if no one can play it (or is willing to play it). That's where lots of people tend to quit. But honestly, new or old, if you utilize Google and the RPG Maker communities and take the actual time/have the conviction to study/learn, then it doesn't matter if you or big or small. My best advice for each and every single new person who starts up, however, is to pay close attention to your language skills. You can make a 12-hour long game, and if half of the sentences are chock-full of spelling errors or other basic grammar issues, not many will want to want to play it for long.
  4. ^ Autorun events execute the commands in the event's contents no matter where it is. It also plays the contents on a loop, however, so you'll have to make a self-switch command (Turn on Self Switch A) to change the event to a blank Page 2.

    Automatically change dialogues?

That's simple. If you hover over the text box, you'll get a tooltip that shows you what chat commands are available that do certain things. For example, typing /i will make the following text in italics. In your case, simply put /^ at the end of your text. It will automatically close the window for you as soon as the last character is drawn.

    An idea I'm bouncing around

Erm....it sounds a lot like my game, Inwards, actually. With a few differences--mine's a teenage boy is trapped in strange world, looking for his little brother, and he's being helped by a teddy bear named Vincent (one of the two main characters), hence the 'duo', navigate puzzles and locate said missing sibling. I do love the concept and think it's a tantalizing tale (alliteration!), and yours sounds like it would be fantastic and even a bit adorable in many ways. It's not a concept you see often in indie games (Among the Sleep I think is the only one that I know of, and the protagonist is s 2-year-old). This just hits a little close to home, because the horror/adventure game I'm making is, as I've said, extremely similar in many ways--right up to childhood fears and monsters going bump in the night. I've release a demo if you're interested in giving that a shot, but keep in mind that it is a horror game. Not a graphic one, surely, but designed to send chills down the spine nonetheless. If you do finish this for the contest, I'd be interested in checking it out.

Event before character is first placed?

Edit: My method is inferior to Zeta's, and takes more time. I always overcomplicate things. I still like starting with a temporary blank graphic character, though...

    How to use custom tilesets?

Chances are you're trying to import tilesets that are for parallax maps (can't be used as normal imports), or the creators of the file didn't put thee objects onto a proper 32x32 grid system. If they're messed up, you'll have to edit the files in GIMP or Photoshop (or paint, but that is WAY harder), and move everything so the objects fit on the 32x32 pixel grid. Easy to do if you use the Show Grid option (for GIMP, unsure of Photoshop equivalent). It's easy to see how things fit onto the grid if you export one of the default RTP tilesets and open it in GIMP or Photoshop, to get an idea of how things should look.

    Hi!

Phew, that's a lot of information. xD Welcome to the forums! Also, yes. Suikoden. I love character-driven, 108-stars, home-based, military-war RPG/strategy political drama games. I condone anyone using that style of RPG. Hope to see you around the forums and don't be afraid to ask questions!

Feed Back For First Parallax Attempts

I see ya used my parallax edits for your cave. They're snippets from RTP backgrounds, yep. Totally not offended for not getting credit. (not sarcasm, just be careful when crediting ;P) The perspective on that cave map is a bit wonky, and I'd recommend doing your shading with burn/dodge on individual layers and with various sizes of brushes, as the lighting isn't consistent. The first map has some strange perspective problems to--half of it looks directly top-down, and the other is more traditional RTP style. For your first try, this is quite good. Remember to use lots of layers, especially with trees, to avoid overlap issues. Continue with the good work! Edit: I do use GIMP. To blur things, there is a Blur tool, which is also a Sharp tool if you need to make something less blurry. Overall, you can affect an entire layer with blur/sharp using the Filter > Enhance option.

Helping my son create his own game

^ Hahaha. Well, it depends on how old your son is. Chances are he'll spend more than a few hours with this. It has a learning curve, however, and isn't so much 'entertaining' as 'rewarding'. If your son is a kid (under 10), it might be more difficult to understand the mechanics of the software, as even the basic gameplay elements take time to learn. You'll fit right in with this community. If you run into problems, feel free to ask. =) And welcome (to both of you)!

    Parallex mapping

Like GameCreations said, it must be saved as a .png file and imported into your Parallax folder. Also, I noticed you put 'Fixed' in the title, which makes me think you may be using the same parallax script I'm using. Only, you're supposed to put [FIXED] in the name of the picture file for the overlay image (the one that you call via an event), not the parallax image underneath. Are you using modern algebra's Fixed Pictures by any chance?
  17. ^ FIrst and foremost, I will always, always, always recommend against creating fan-games for any series, even spiritual successor ones. Not because they're bad or I'm a beanie-weenie-pants-on-head-meanie, but because traditionally they don't keep a creator inspired enough to continue through the personal torture pit that is single-handedly creating an expansive video game. Basing a game off an existing mold is like creating with building blocks. Basing a game off purely original ideas is like creating with Play-Dough. Man, I write long sentences. But really, if you're just going to use the battle style and not use any material or lore objects from an existing game, then you're basically just creating an original work with inspiration. I'm sure there are scripts out there that emulate the DQ battle system. I know for certain there are a few party-recruitment and party-changer scripts out there. Plus you canmake a party-changing system through pure eventing. As for your question, 'does this theory sound reasonable', there isn't much theory here at all. You've told us you want to create an RPG and that you're okay at writing, but that's like saying you're going swimming and you've got a towel. So, you've got a towel, aaaaand...?

    Corrupt Save..... Still.... :(

^ This has happened because your game file is corrupted--either caused by moving/editing files in your game's folder that shouldn't have been moved, or by the game being shut down in a power outage and/or just closed unexpectedly while files were being accessed. If replacing the common events file with a fresh one doesn't work, you might be boned. If you're desperate for something to try, what you could try is removing or deleting any files that might be linked to your common events in your game. For example, if you have common events in the game that call certain .png files (like pictures in the Pictures directory), or BGMS or sound effects, try removing all resource files associated with the common events you've made. Beyond that, I've no idea how a corrupted game file could be fixed. Making backup copies of your project is always recommended.
  19. So many things to respond to...xD Putting response in spoilers to save space and because it contains actual spoilers: I knew the bottle puzzle would be tougher than most. Vincent's not all that helpful, either. I'm updating the demo and future installments of the game to include a lot more dialogue from him when activated, to give people a better idea where to look for hints/tips on what should be done. Thanks for playing, and I'm really looking forward to seeing that 'Let's Play'.

    Aggressive Clothing?

I immediately imagined someone's clothes coming to life and trying to attack them while still on their body. I'm still thinking it, actually. Hee hee. Hee hee. Okay, no time for that. Serious face, Yachi. Most RPGs already have restrictions such as these. If you're not going to use the concept of armour at all (no armour sets) and stick to just clothing, then trying to make realistic stat changes based on clothing won't be easy. I mean, sure, a tank or halter top that offers little cold resistance might be good and give boosts to dexterity, whereas a thick trenchcoat would do the opposite. Jeans are restrictive in their movement. If you want to change your stat base entirely, you can add a social aspect to stat boosts and have them affect NPC or other character reactions to you on a variable system (that gets a little in-depth, I know). For example, if you're wearing clothing of a matching set or have a high social stat, you may get dialogue options that aren't available when wearing your mismatching parka and jeans. A suit and tie would be a good example of something like this.

  23. There's also the file type of any imported sound files. If you're using WAV files, they are huge, so you might want to consider converting them to OGG. Even MP3 tends to be kind of large. The free Audacity program can do this--very simply interface and everything.
  24. See, Brook is my favourite character in this series. I love them all, but since Brook joined, it's been difficult to rewatch the series or read the manga from the start because it just seems...lacking, without him. And Franky--who' s awesome, too. This seems like a good idea, and I'll probably give it a shot one way or another, but it would be nice if it was a game that expanded beyond just copy+paste directly from the anime. If I want to see the anime from the start with the exact same story and script, I'd just watch it. Bonus content, bonus scenes, mini-games aboard the Going Merry--so many things you could do. Heck, this is something I could get behind and collaborate on, I love One Piece so much. I just got shivers thinking of a One Piece game with parallax maps... Anyway! Kudos for undertaking this. Good luck! Edit: I'm editing this to show people just how much I love this anime: It's to the point I think I need help.

    Music Feedback Thread

@Clydous: Yowza. Man, I loved that! It screamed 'Ratchet and Clank' to me for some reason. xD I could listen to that for at least an hour. It's got an industrial flare that would make it perfect for anything Steampunk or Industrial age. I do think you did go a bit overboard--the counter-melody works, but the percussions just makes it feel messy. Still fantastic! Just the constant 16th notes, that 'ticking' kinda seemed outta place. The slower parts were amazing, but perhaps consider adjusting the volume of different tracks to soften some parts to make the melody stand more? And finally, the synth horn that plays the melody (first introduced at 0:14) is great, but something more...punctuated (hard to think of the terms I need here), something that isn't so low-frequency might sound better. Everything else seemed to drown it out and it didn't boom, like it should. In my opinon. You want me to share more? Okay, but there's a total of 14 clips I've recorded and this is the second-best. Unfortunately it does have a bit of a tinny effect in one place, and no amount of frequency-altering could smooth it out in Audacity. It's strange, I make a poor voice actor with just my regular un-altered voice. Increase the pitch, and it's less annoying. Pha!
