    The Uplift

Greetings! I have decided to start fresh, scrapping the old notes of the Lost Project mentioned in the previous post. I was in a different time and place way back when I started that one, so to recapture it sounds a bit like an effort in futility. Work has begun on developing a new world with entirely different actors, though I'd be lying if I didn't admit to keeping a handful of aspects from the old. In leafing through my notebook, I found a few that I am rather fond of. Stepping stones, perhaps. In doing this, I have also decided to avoid the use of online resources for sprites and faces. You folks have put out some absolutely wonderful work, and it is nothing short of inspiring. As for making sprites, I can certainly handle that part on my own. Character faces, on the other hand, will be tricky for me. Part of the pleasure, I suppose, is figuring out how to pull it off with minimal artistic talent. I expect to request the assistance of an artist friend whose delicious ways with a digital pen are already coloring life into a separate project with me. I've been nothing short of impressed with his particular brand of creativity and intelligence, and it is a delight to bounce ideas off him. So, that is my direction as of now. The software will sit idle as I gather my thoughts, and try my hand at a little artwork this time around. When I have materials to begin building the database (now that I am refreshed on what is needed), only then will I turn it back on. This seems like a good approach, for me, and I am excited to try while learning a few new things. However, it is now time for real world work.

    Well...I've come back.

Haha, thanks. I do my best to use it correctly, but was never formally trained. The struggle is real. At any rate, I made this post on no sleep, and it seems echoes of the dark gallows humor from a different non-game project slipped in. A friend and I are working on a comic book, and I must be in a certain mood to capture the feel of the world I've created with my words. Sometimes it lingers longer than I'd like it to. It will. It always does. The great thing about being in a rut is that they're temporary.

Tales of Pandamonia: The Sacred Dungeon Theory and Development

Writing this sounds deliciously difficult. Really looking forward to see what you do with this concept, and wish you the absolute best!

    Well...I've come back.

It's been roughly a year and half. Likely longer when it comes to working on my project. Time is an oily thing. Oh, the project. I never really did have a title for it. That, however, doesn't matter now since it is gone. It's a little heartbreaking knowing that 150+ hours of work just sort of vanished because the machine I used to work on decided to have some sort of quantum event that rendered the old grey mare unable to run. Of course, I was backing up my work on a USB stick, which has slipped over a persistent event horizon that seems to follow me like a hungry puppy, gulping down items slotted for that esoteric "one day" use, should that day ever come. Steam Cloud backup? I apparently wasn't using it. I'm honestly not sure why. I can toss out all the flimsy laments I want, folks, but the lesson stands tall, casting all attempts a blame shifting in its shadow; back your work up properly. I'm having an awful time getting back into the swing of things. Don't get me wrong, plenty of nifty stuff in the software returned to me after fiddling about with buttons and numbers for a few hours. The sticky, amoebic part that I can't seem to get a proper hold on is the re-creating the creating. I've still got a dusty, coffee-stained notebook with jots and doodles reminding me just where I was going, but so far nothing about what I'm doing feels correct the way it did the first time around. Not that I had birthed the most masterful fifteen playable minutes of game back then, but what's coming out now is some ersatz product with the branding pasted on, leaving it smelling of glue and decaying dreams. Perhaps it is best to start anew. Though, with far less continuous hours to devote on a weekly basis, it will be awhile before I build something worth mentioning again. But I'm damned well going to try. Hello, again, VXers!

    Voices - Yay or Nay?

I'm also one to say "no" in the context of RM games. Now, if you're talking about putting well animated cinematic cut scenes in with some solid voice talent, then maybe, and I mean fully rendered 3D models where the mouth and body moves accordingly, not just sprites. As for in-game dialogue, stick with text. Not just because it's traditional, but it's what people expect, and changing that would likely be jarring to the experience of playing the types of games once can make with RM.
  6. I'm in trouble. I can't stop playing One Way Heroics every chance I get. Must...stay...productive!

That was the same with me and Fire Emblem: The Ubermensch Breeding Simulator. That game~

OWH is pretty addictive. I can play for five minutes or five hours, and walk away instantly if I need to...hence, it's the perfect game to sneak play at work! haha

  7. I may not be making great strides in my own game, but it's nice to be around a community of creative people with similar goals, again.

Aww... The feeling is mutual, my friend.

You're not burned out, are you? That's the worst place to be.

Nope! My other hobbies are getting in the way, haha. Not that I'm complaining. I've had some of these projects lined up for over a year now. Feels good to start getting stuff done!

  8. Took a break to focus on some non-game writing and ended up starting to learn Python. What?

Isn't that the language that Twine uses? Or maybe that was something else...

but by learning python you'd be able to make games with Renpy :D

Maybe, but I don't intend to make games with it. The needs of a local non-profit I work for led me to realize our lives with be easier with simple software, so I figured screw it, I'll try to do this.

  9. Had a lovely weekend of gaming and beers. Finished up Jazzpunk. Super short, but funny. If you like Adult Swim humor, you'll dig the game.

    Different styles of dungeon!

I've always liked the idea of a blighted town as a dungeon. Maybe some others would be a haunted hedge maze, or sewers as dungeons. Those are all pretty linear feeling, though. Is it possible to make a sort of "hall of mirrors" as a dungeon? I feel like that setting would be ripe for traps and puzzles.

Any tips on making a Library?

Nice. Between this, and Sakuraba's Custom Encyclopedia, I'm going to need to watch myself so that my game doesn't turn into a visual novel. Not that I dislike visual novels, I just want my project to appeal to a wider audience. I tend to be...verbose. Anyway, here's a link to Sakuraba's thread, if you want to check out his script. http://www.rpgmakervxace.net/topic/21978-sakurabas-custom-encyclopedia-v11/?hl=sakuraba

    Chill-out Corner (Fave Music Thread)

As much as I love some classical and blues, Alt-J has been dominating my ears lately. The whole album is terrific, but here is my favorite track (this week)
  13. I really need to start tackling some of my Steam games. Or maybe just stop buying them with this ridiculous "one day I'll have time to play this" method.

I wish. Although my friends hate all the games I like. Anything that's not a Halo or COD clone doesn't fit into their world view as a "good game" :(

I have a bunch of games on steam I need to finish to. (if anyone want to add me by the way, my screen name there is the same as here)

I'll add you. My screenname is the same as this one, as well if anyone would like to add me. I can usually be found secretly surfing Greenlight while working, mwa-ha-ha!

    Sakuraba's Custom Encyclopedia v1.1

Interesting! I may end up using this (credit to you, of course!). I've got some terms and such in my game that the player doesn't need to memorize or anything, but it might be nice for the more curious players to be able to look up stuff whenever they want, and get a little more back story.
  15. I just started Tales of the Drunken Paladin recently, you might enjoy it. And if you're up for it, Charles Barkley Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden had me cracking up the whole time I played it. I want to say it was made using RM 2003, but I can't remember. All I know is when I had to fight Ghost Dad and find Wilford Brimley, I knew I was playing something special.
