I like both sets for different reasons. I like that the newer ones are more true to the source material (and they don't involve any RTP edits), while I like the older ones because they remind me of the fun I had when I was still getting used to pixel art.

....... And here I spent all this time thinking it was a sock. I think it might help if you made it look like it has an outer casing of some sort, but it's a good start.

The design is cool, but I still think you need to go back and add more values. As nice as the design is, the amount of the same yellows/greens/blues makes it a bit boring, visually. 

What I'd suggest is going back and adding some highlights to the vegetation (it's a bit bland), and redoing the texture of the water (it doesn't match the level of detail in the rest, so it kind of pulls me out of the composition). 

Don't get me wrong - it's good, but you could make it better.  

I do, but I'm not sure about how I plan on releasing it. :0
