Thanks for all the replies. I just deployed this week so I am having a hard time finding time to use the suggestions. @HumanNinja: you said,"You can make beautiful parallax maps with lighting/ambiance without them having a realistic or gritty feel/look to them" I have a hard time finding much usefeul info on how to create lighting effects. I see a lot of pictures on the internet of gorgeous maps that have obviously had some sort of lighting/ambiance done to them, but I have yet to come across a tutorial that lays it all out for me. I know how to make a window look like light is shining through it, but the real nice effects I just haven't been able to figure out. Thanks again, I can't wait to get back into this.

I was worried about clashing as well. Recoloring everything would take too long I think. Some light parallaxing is what I think will work best. Thank you for the compliments, I was starting to feel a little unmotivated. It's always nice to get a little ego boost now and again. Fun fact of the day: As far as the food hanging off the table, for some reason the editor shows it hanging off, but in game the program seems to recognizes this and compensates for it.

Pushing a boulder onto a non-passable tile
undefind replied to undefind's topic in Editor Support and Discussion
Ah, that worked. Never thought to check the move route. I looked everywhere to see if I could make a variable that would act the same way. Although, I didn't want the boulder to become transparent since I don't want the player to somehow start pushing an invisible boulder and deactivating the boulder on hole variable, and I don't think that would have solved the problem of the player not being able to pass that tile. So, I just created conditional branch to see if the boulder was on the hole and turned on a self switch. You are a genius sir, thank you. -
This sounds more like an interactive Computer Based Training (CBT) that the U.S. Air Force uses to conduct online training. Boring. People are forced to study up on a subject that does not interest them and the program tries to make it interesting by introducing games or puzzles to capture the interest of the user. Unless the story is as interesting as something like Chrono Trigger, you should be very careful how you use this. I think a demo would be best to gauge everyone's opinion. This could be a really great idea, or an equally bad one. Just my 2 cents.

I think it's getting the hang of doing light and shadow to make the map look crisper and more alive. I see a lot of maps and think "How the hell did you do that?" Right now I am struggling with learning how to make an object glow. The tutorials I have read/watched don't seem to help me. I think I'm just not getting it.

I have to say, "One of Many" had chills running up my spine. I got an irresistible urge to go play FF6...bookmarked!

Ye, I have started doing interior mapping and it is definitely harder imo. I'm sure it's easy once I get the hang of it, but it's going super slow right now.

Neither of the interiors are parallaxed. I just posted them to show variety and style. I am noticing (from what little I have seen on Google) that parallaxing interiors is mostly only about shadows and light. I can't help but think potential is wasted by using it only for that purpose, and I have no examples to go off of that indicate interior mapping potential aside from the shadows/light thing. I think I just had an idea though...

Well, I really appreciate your comments. Any advice on interior maps? I have never tried to parallax an interior map before and I am not sure how it would work. Parallaxing to me seems more of an exterior thing. Maybe I'll jump back on Google and see what I can find.

That is definitely not the answer I was expecting! Thank you for the compliment on the 3rd map. My biggest problems with it is it was very time consuming, but worst of all is the buildings. I just don't know if they fit...

I have been dabbling in parallax mapping a bit to get a feel for mapping potential. I came up with a few versions of a particular map and I haven't decided on what kind of mapping style I should go with. I attached a few interior maps as well and I have to say I really like those and was thinking of going with some parallax on those akin to the brighter colored parallaxed town map. Should I stick with the basics until after I have finished my first project or go midway like in the first parrallaxed map? I'm pretty sure I won't try advanced stuff like I did with the puke map. Town Maps: I really like the way the swamp town came out in all the screenshots Interior maps:

Hello, Some of you may have already seen me poking around in here. I started using VX ace about 2 or 3 weeks ago and I have no game making experience whatsoever. I usually spend most of my time on google trying to figure things out, but then I pop on here when I give up. I will be deploying to the desert soon for about 6 months, so this is probably what I'll be doing for quite some time.

@Feldschlacht IV very nostalgic. I love the 16 bit feel. No thoughts on my screenshot when compared to my earlier one? -

@HumanNinja Thanks for the tips. I haven't been able to figure out how to fix that thing with the top half of the blacksmith hanging over like it needed some support posts, but it's just a matter of time. I recolored the map with some darker shades and gave it a pretty significant overhaul. I didn't put the bridge back in because I just didnt have enough time, but I know exactly what needs to be done. Anyway, I spent about the last 6 hours trying to figure out how to properly parallax map but I need to go to bed, so here is the incomplete product, let me know what you think. Oh, and ignore the doors P.S. I was going to try and find a sound bite with crickets and cicadas and use that as my BGM. Not sure about music yet. -
So I thought I would try my hand at parallax mapping. Let me know what you guys think. Feel free to be as critical as you feel necessary, the more suggestions the better. You won't hurt my feelings.
