  10. Which is more likely to cause tears, creating an emotional bond with two characters and then (violently and lethally) separating them? Or showing through flashbacks while the character is recovering their memory shortly afterwards, realizing what occurred at the end?

      Show, don't tell applies for visuals as well, if you can think of it that way. It's better to empathize with characters if we seen them acting in real time.

      One way that I can think of is using a variable that will decrease or increase based on the actual value. Then use that variable for displaying the value.
