That is sure to cause performance problems as the number of events per map does impact frame rate. Oh, hehe, I didn't know that. I'll listen to Wren's idea :3 -

What I had to do is create a blank event, set the priority as "Same as Character", and copy and paste that event on everything I don't want the character to walk on. Hope it helps! -
