I'm having problems making the miniboss overworld sprite work.

Try applying a 32x32 grid to your image as a template for where the placement of your sprites should be. -

No problem, just go to a photo hosting website (like this one, just click on "new post" and then browse for your picture) and upload your image there, and then link back to it here.
