  1. Finally got some progress done on Kamikakushi 2.0. (Thanks to my GF for helping me fight through depression)

     

    So... What did I change?

    -Revised dialogue

    - Ramped difficulty for the chase scenes/music box puzzle

    - temporarily removed the doll puzzle (blame the depression)

    - added some flashbacks that further explain Hisame and Shin's backstory

    - replaced face graphics and sprites for Ueno and Yamazawa.

    - replaced the sprite for short-haired Yasu

    - added a book in the Omake Room that helps explain some mythos that wasn't clear.

    ^ attempted to sprite graphics for Hisame in some cutscenes using a base. More to come...

    - fixed up all of the face graphics

    - added a bit of developer's foresight in the True End route that some players could abuse in 1.0. Attempting to backtrack after the final chase scene will now net you an INSTANT Bad End. That's how I roll, kiddos.

     

    So what's next after Kamikakushi 2.0? Maybe helping my GF with her project? Or maybe I could try working on my other small-scale projects? Who knows.

      Arms are very difficult. Legs, even more so. I'm trying to convert an MV character into an SMBX sprite sheet, and that's really hard, especially since I'm making a 'costume' for Megaman...

      (those sprite sheets are 1,000 x 1,000 pixels each)

    Thanks! Um... There's these from Black and Blue Treasure Chest (far left one on the bottom for the children, girl in yellow). And this one from Uma-Che (far right one on the top). and one more. A downed weeping pose for these two would be great. Sorry if this is too big of a request.... ^^;

    A big thank you to one of my playtesters who noticed one very humiliating typo I forgot about. I fixed that up for version 2.0. I had mistakenly made one character look like a lolicon!

      That reminds me of an embarrassing typo I made not too long ago (PS was teasing me about it). Did I ever fix that? Hmmm... Yes it looks like I did, but made the same mistake somewhere else. Oopise... good thing I noticed!

  11. I've been working my butt off revising things for Kamikakushi 2.0. What kind of things? Revised dialogue, ramped up puzzle and chase scene difficulty, maybe another stupid death or two? idk.

    Don't get too used to the easy difficulty of version 1.0.

      Also added a bit of developer's foresight. If you backtrack AFTER EVADING THE SERIAL MURDERING FOX DEMON ON YOUR TAIL, you INSTANTLY get the Bad End.

      Honestly when I first complained about that puzzle I think I just missed the thing with the clues on it. That being said, I generally dislike this kind of puzzle for exactly that reason. Really most puzzles in games have the same problem. That if you miss something and can't figure it out you can easily get stuck and can't really do anything else. It's not really even a matter of the puzzle being 'too hard' half the time, just that it's really easy to overlook stuff. I mean, there are tons of LP videos where people completely overlook something right in their face just because they are looking for something else or not paying attention.

       

      And the thing is? That wouldn't be so bad if it didn't make the game grind to a halt whenever it happened. Miss a cool secret or optional thing? That's too bad, but the game goes on and you can always find or learn about it later. Can't move on with the game till you have solved the soup cans? The player is likely to just look up the answer or get frustrated and quit. But if they solve it too easily, well, it's not much of a puzzle is it? I personally rather have puzzles be secret/optional things. Make them as hard as you want, but don't make the whole game revolve around them. I mean, granted, in horror/adventure games you don't really often have a lot of gameplay that isn't related to puzzles in some form or another, but most players play them for the story anyway so... I donno, just saying my thoughts on the matter.

      The question is... what would the reward for an optional puzzle be? More backstory in the omake room? Bonus art?

       

      Maybe I should have went with the idea of the doll being a key? "I want to see my daughter again..."

  15. It is with great pleasure I announce that the writing for Kamikakushi is 100% complete!

     

    I just need to fix up the face graphics and add some lines of dialogue in the bonus room and I can safely say this puppy's good to go.

      Yay! Though sometimes it seems like the last 10% of game development takes up 90% of the time, so don't worry if you spend a lot more time polishing then you expected. :3

    Was playing around a bit and created a nice firefly effect in game. I personally love how it turned out. 😮 It's kinda hard to tell from a static image, but the fireflies move around.

      That experiment speaks of aetherial energy as a physical object, more or less, not dissimilar to negative matter, which is not very far off, but is not the same thing at all.

       

      Aetherial energy isn't an object, it is something that exists outside of the five standard senses but empowers those same senses plus the three extraneous senses.

      Only three extraneous senses? And nowadays people count at least 7 and up to 21 standard senses depending on how you count, but most of them could be thought of as a part of the traditional five sense categories I suppose. :3

      Okay, yeah. At least one of these looks like it was inspired by that oddity of a game called U.F.O. (PSX-Japan), and that's some nostalgia on its' own. Neat.

  18. I did read one short story I thought would make a rather interesting game plotbunny: basically, some Joe Schmoe wakes up in his own apartment with amnesia because of an incident that happened several months prior.

     

    Now, here's the interesting part: his amnesia relapses whenever he experiences intense stress. So he's in a constant samsara of remembering and forgetting his wife's murder. Or maybe that's just my love of fine mystery/horror speaking.

      Isn't that like the movie memento? Hehe, never saw it myself so I am not sure. My favorite game that deals with memory loss is Planescape: Torment. But then I am a sucker for the Planescape setting.

      I can't say I ever heard of that Memento movie either. Maybe the author was inspired by it, who knows?

  19. After battling a cold and art block, I managed to get some progress done on Kamikakushi. It was a bit jarring for Yasu to not have face graphics in the True End, so I fixed that. (Not perfect, but what can you do)

     

    I still have about 4-3% more to finish? I should think about how to combine one idea I had with an idea a playtester suggested to me...

  20. *reading a story about fairies and the MC and her fiance breaks 5 of the 8-or-so fairy rules of etiquette*

     

    I'm sorry MC-chan but at this point, you kinda deserve this. 🤦🏻‍♀️

      Oh dear. Honestly I am not sure what most fairies have could be described as 'etiquette' (outside of those in the Seelie court anyway, bunch of stuck up types always trying to one up each other with silly political games if you ask me), but we do have more then a few unwritten rules we tend to take very seriously. Plus it's not like fairies respect most humans very much in the first place, so offending a fairy isn't too hard. Some will just be begging for an excuse to mess with you. ❤️

       

      Generally though many fairies won't mess with you to much if you amuse them. Just keep in mind: The worst thing you can do, the absolute worst, the swiftest way to annoy a fairy, is to ruin their fun. And keep in mind that annoyed fairies tend to find ways of having fun anyway, mostly at the expense of the one who annoyed them.

      Hehe, cute little tikes tend to do that don't they? ❤️ But one has to be careful around human children, they are more dangerous then they seem. Without all the muck adult humans tend to believe clouding their brain as much, they are a lot more competent. They can see things adults ignore, take actions they wouldn't think of. A human child has been the downfall of many a fairy after all.

  22. YES!!! FINALLY GOT THE CHASE CODE WORKING!

     

    Now to wrap up the other 5% and Kamikakushi is 100% done.

  23. Goodness, the fae folk are terrifying. There's a lot of potential for horror games there in those stories...

      Hehe, I wonder what you will think of the game I am working on? It's all about playing with fairies like me! It's not really a horror game exactly, but it's not really not a horror game either. And who knows, maybe I can sneak in a little magic to really draw you in. Maybe I should send you an early version! I can't wait to play with you! Come on! It will be fun! *grins a bit too widely and giggles* For me at least...

  24. Boog... I'm drawing a blank when it comes to how to revise one doll puzzle in game. I don't want to axe it, but I can't think of any ideas that hasn't been done before or make sense with the setting (1940's Japan) and fit the whole Japanese mythology theme.

      @Kayzee the clue to the doll puzzle was in the doll room next to the large creepy doll. Man, I really need to make that more noticeable...

      Though, I have to admit... In its current stage, it's pretty obscure and just says the dates WHEN they were killed as a clue instead of describing the murdered kid.

       

      EDIT Aaaaaaand, done. Now, the diary describes the murdered kids (with the doll flavor text to match).

      I can DM you the Dropbox link to my current project (not finished yet). I tried every tutorial on Ao Oni style chase sequences out there and none of them help with the chaser insta-spawning on top of the player. I'm at my wit's end...
