Hey guys!
I just wanted to start a topic to discuss World Maps, and how engaging they need to be for the player to enjoy them.
Newer Rpg's have extremely big World Maps (Skyrim is one such example), and being able to roam-freely is something
which is generally favoured.
However when considering the capabilities of the RPG Maker Engines, how engaging and big do you expect the world map(s) to be?
I myself find that people often consider the World Map before most other maps, but I generally try and get the towns mapped first, and then build the world map around it so it's easier for myself, to figure plot locations and other stuff out.
Size seems to be an important thing, many people think that a World Map has to be huge, but why not have more then one world map, it's not unheard off for a map to expand the further the story gets.
Personally, I like a World Map, to have both a mix of important and general locations, with a few optional dungeons and such, which don't have a major effect on the main storyline, but perhaps have a sub-quest or something similar.
Just the other day, there was status updates on this site, talking about World Map sizes and the discussion ranged from 200x200 to 500x500. I simply think the latter is too large for something engaging to be gained from an Enterbrain Engine.
Anyways, what are your thoughts, anything will suffice from talking about maps you've designed to existing World Maps in games.
