  1. Heya folks, after playing games, watching movies, seeing animations, and reading stories, I've noticed there seems to be a fine line between what's acceptable for developing characters, and what isn't allowed. before continuing these points, I do want to mention that developing takes time, work, perseverance, and even error. In addition, character development is like an art, there are multiple ways to go about one method, much like the styles of shading. I've dealt with my fair share of delevoping characters, the list stretching to 177, and while I may start from a random part of my imagination, I will repeat that that this is not the only way, but could be one way that may help you in the processes. Let's start off with a name. For the purpose of examples, I'll be using my character Rilumia. Your character's name should have a reflection to the style of names your world has, whether it be Japanese, English, Scottish, some self-created language, and so on. You will also want to avoid repeating certain name aspects, as this can get the reader/player confused on name pronunciation. For example, I have two dragons by the name of Rea and Rei. The only major difference in the last letter. Rea is pronounced "Re-uh", while Rei is, well, "Re." This alone can be confusing as you try to remember what character has what name. In some cases, however, you're able to get away with this. Twins, siblings, family names, and how the family's language works are a few of possibly many exceptions. Names should also have a reason to them. Rilumia used to be a demon, thus she has a multi-syllable name that is akin to the race of demons of Scalvose. Your next step is possibly going to be determining what the character likes and dislikes, along with the personality. Rilumia absolutely adores animals, so you can feel a soft spot in the character's overall context as she grows throughout the story of the book, piece, or game. You will want to avoid basing likes off of other characters until you finish everything that the character likes on their own terms. Let's set up a small sheet below, so keep a bit of formatting while determining the character's development. Name: Rilumia Likes: Animals, the ocean breeze, flowers, food, and long walks through the forests. Dislikes: Blood, sickness, fighting, sour candies, silence. (Note: You don't have to place these in a sentence-like format. This is my style of setting these up.) When it comes to what a character likes and dislikes, or love and avidly hate, and so on, they do not have to be polar opposites. You can have a soft-hearted man who lacks a backbone love heavy metal just as much as a kid loves candy. If the character loves sour things, they don't have to hate sweet things. For every like, it adds to the character if you can provide a reason behind why they like something. Rilumia loves flowers because she can utilize them as a defensive measure when she's attacked, and the ocean breeze makes her feel unbound from other mundane tasks. She's a cook, so food is something she would enjoy. Walks through the forest allow her to see animals and plants, which increase her enjoyment down to the earth. The same goes for dislikes. Rilumia is a bit of a germaphobe, so she will definitely dislike getting sick or seeing blood, and while she isn't against injuring somebody to protect herself, if a fight is avoidable in any possible way, Rilumia will try to take that path. Disliking silence comes from her personality, which is our next subject. Personality: Sultry, gentle, adventurous, cunning, partially germaphobic, and slightly seductive. The character's personality has all rights to reflect their likes and dislikes, and don't let others say otherwise. You know your character more than the next guy down the street, so you ned to convey the reasons behind their personality. In addition, personalities can't be abstract, as they must be reflected in each word of the character in some way. However, you don't need to reflect every personality aspect in one line or word all the time. Sometimes the character can have enough mentality to know when to be mature and push their own feelings aside for a while. Or, like my character Darkness, can be complete morons and not understand much of what goes on around him, other than when he's hit for being perverted or making crude jokes. Their personality needs to exsist. Rilumia loves poking her nose towards the winds of a journey, and while she may be bothered by germs and the like, she's gentle and rarely shows her disgust. Though she doesn't mean to be, she has a seductive tone to her words sometimes, which irks others. Otherwise, being sultry, she has a passionate heart and to some, she does rather attract them. Blessings: Quick to protect those in need, Green thumb. Banes: Body scales are soft and fragile, very energetic. (Note: These can be called pros and cons, strengths and weaknesses, and so on.) Lastly, I want to talk about blessings and banes. These are things that the character excells and fully fails at, regardless of how strange they may be. Rilumia, once she fell in love with a dragon's scale, it eventually lead to her falling in love with the dragon, himself. Demon blood is severly malleable in terms of race, and thus her body started to slowly corrupt, or change into that of a dragon. She doesn't know if she still has enough demon blood in her to continue being changed, but she doesn't really care too much as it opened many new paths of life for her, whether in the form of strength, endurance, smell, and the list goes on. However, her true self is still present in her mind, which gives her a constant questioning on what has happened to her as time has gone. In term of the change, her scales are as soft as velvet, and can easily be removed like a bird feather. However, this doesn't stop her from being quick to shield blows aimed at innocent people. On the downside, the amount of energy in her body tends to keep her up at night a lot, forcing her to try and find ways to calm herself to sleep, like reading, seditives, and the old attempts of drinking warm milk. This is a basic outline to get started on fleshing out your characters, which I hope helps you all in need of it. If you have any questions, comments, or feel as if I misstated a part, please leave a comment below and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.

Looking for Art Critique - WIP

I'm with the masse here, though I will also point out that the alien mind control looks somewhat like another game's icon XD Then again, who knows, everything thought up of is never thought of the first time, but there's always uniqueness.

  8. What have I done so far in my game?

    1. Made the prologue and started on chapter 1.
    2. Finalized all stat curves for base characters. (Xerian still ends up netting 700+ attack... lucky guy.)
    3. Started working on the lore behind each character as the premise to the first chapter, and also possible tuning for how some skills work.
    4. Finalized all possible statuses for this game. (This doesn't include inherent statuses that some bosses have, but rather what the player can inflict as a whole.)
    5. Thyrois, the God of Creation, will sadly not be a playable character as I intended him to be. The lunatic script needs more of my studying and understanding before he can be one. Don't worry though, his omnilasers can still be fired at you while you fight him.
    6. Field-based auras/abilities can be found by now going to the Roa arena and by going to some libraries. These places will give vital information behind the statuses and skills/spells you may want and/or need.

I'll be posting more in my devlog in my blog once I get back to my computer, so sit tight!

  10. Well, Tarq hit the points that I feel would need to be stated, but something I want to mention is that as long as your game feels unique, then it should at least get some positive review.

  12. As of to this date, I have the most insta-death skills I've ever seen in a game? Interesting. Now lemme just add insta-death to the basic attacks and we're golden!

      Your party is now dead!

      Game Over.

Careful with those. They can make a game far too easy or far too difficult in a hurry.

    2. Rezanta

      Rezanta

      Eh, careful? Nah.

      Fun? Yes. *shakes head no*

The rates work as to ensure it's fair, but challenging, and only one of them actually party sweep. (It has a 45% chance to actually hit, and then only has a 15-25% chance to inst-kill.)

  13. So, I've played around with MP reducing/increasing damage, and HP doing the same. Is there a quick formula to do the same with stats in a regard to buffing/debuffing before applying the damage?

      Rezanta

Heh. That's a funny thing, actually. I think, if my math serves correct in correlation to memory, my spell, Earth Shatter, hits for great damage via basic formula. Earth Talons hit for a total of all stats, excluding TP and MP, and is reduced by the target's defense. Funny how level 30ish and 90 both deal around balanced damage.

    3. PhoenixSoul

      PhoenixSoul

      1 + (a.mhp - a.hp) + a.atk + a.def + a.mat + a.mdf + a.agi + a.luk * 6

I had that damage formula set up for a Blue Magic skill, Dragon Rage. The caveat here is that it did more damage, the less HP the user had...

    4. Rezanta

      Rezanta

      A.hp+a.atk+a.def+a.mat+a.mdf+a.agi+a.luk-b.def*3

Earth Talons damage formula works in very neat ways, as increasing stats only nets an additional 20-50 damage for the attack, and being a special attack in and of itself, the feeling of using it for decent damage for a first special is great.

Need a plugin to display a variable in a window

If you use Yanfly's Alt Save Screen plug-in, you avoid needing another plug-in as it would show the first six variables. (Alternate currency is also a way to do so, which is also from Yanfly, but we're not talking about multiple payment methods.) Other than that, I'd have to find one to actually help in better regards. For now, this could be used as a temp solve.
  15. Hey, so here's a quick question.

What's the feeling on being able to use enemy skills/magic in battle? (Kind of like Bravely Default/Second)

Get hit first then learn it? (I know it's blue mage ability from ff)

Uh well... I do use Copying skill of enemy but not need to be hit to learn it, but by use Skill to copy enemy skill.

It's like targeting enemy who have skill you want and you get it. (Like sharingan maybe...)

(Actually I was doing some like blue mage ability by let my character get attacked to learn skill but the skill I want to learn is DEATH SPELL, so my hero need to death in order to learn it, while if he dead then GAME OVER)

Oh yeah I like to use this kind of stuff, it's sounds like "Taste your own medicine" or so it goes.

    On Gear, Part 1, Weapons.

I do recommend maybe considering thrust as a possible grouping/bonus, but I like the list overall! Something I did for my balancing (While basically making all weapons useful in many situations) is that each weapon has a bonus applied to those who use it. Now, don't get me wrong, a weapon like the Chain Sword really makes you temped to just attack forever. Here's a few examples: Hurundi: A gun that deals lightning damage. This gun also increases a non-gunner stat for a but of defense loss. Chain Sword: Basic attacks hit an additional six times. (They still have their respect accuracy per hit.) Shifty Prism: A dagger that grants a 5% chance to reflect spells at the caster. Great if you want to set up some interesting or try and use opposing magic to your advantage. Armor also plays a balancing roll in making any party combination have strengths and weaknesses, in addition to Insignias. (Insignias are like badges from the Mario & Luigi series)
  18. So, I've some fun news from an encounter.

If somebody is able to catch meteors and drain life out of any choice, he automatically loses to people like Superman and Goku. Who knew Wane was such a weakling.

    1. Kayzee

      Kayzee

Hehe, you know what's funny? I could probobly beat Superman. It's true! I am a magical fairy and Superman dosn't handle magic very well, and I think I am a bit more clever then that silly imp who is always messing with him. Though between you and me, o' Mxy might just like having an excuse to get wound up and allows himself to lose. Still Supes is more clever and resourceful then people give him credit for.

As for Goku? In a straight out fight? No way! But I am a fairy, and we play dirty. Still, I can't think of much that I can trick him into that would really beat him. Drugged or poisoned food comes to mind, but I am pretty sure that has been tried and his body just is too good at filtering it out? I donno.

    2. Rezanta

      Rezanta

Probs. Wane just has a ton of defense, as in a normal gun bullet will basically bounce off him, and with his heavy endurance, he doesn't exactly go down without a fight. Only thing I can say is that his best ability, Death Root, could do a great number to both, possibly defeating Superman in a heartbeat. I mean, the guy controls the earth below him at any given moment! He could fish whatever needed item to be Superman, but Goku fighting Wane would be a long, drawn fight, for sure.

Random Encounters, My take on them.

Honestly, I voted Yes/Yay. Then again, I use both map-based encounter styles in the form of roaming enemies and random encounters. Best of both w- Reddit: "You're a failure." Me: "Sure, but the encounters mean something much more in my game than you think." As I have posted and made a topic on before, you can encounter powerful creatures by simply smacking its young around. For example: A Frezeraga pack has you in its sights, but since you can overwhelm them, you can farm them. They're a random encounter, so you can simply flee. You decide to keep fighting them, and eventually you run into an elder. Do you choose to run now? But wait, there's more. The elder Frezeragas can easily stop most of your team by freezing, preventing escape, and they have an ability to prevent escaping having priority. They also have much higher stats than their young (obviously), thus you must pick your fights wisely. This is my style of random encounters and spending time with variables. As for on map, they're there to show what's going, per say. In a demon air-prison and trying to escape? Fight through guards (that are really easy) as you do! Running across a bridge to corner a target, fight some flying creatures, like Air Elementals. Pretty fun if you ask me. I give the player both ways as equal as I can, thus making it pointless to say there's too many random encounters. You can even avoid all normal fights and just fight the bosses if you really choose to do so, so I think that's always a plus to advocate how random encounters can be fun as well. Time consuming if the system gives a low "roll" to your average steps needed, sure, but nonetheless.

The boss I finished has a couple enemies that can outright kill you if left alone, not to mention the boss's basic attack can one-shot one of your party members. Items are a big friend to those wanting to beat the boss, and without leveling up a bit, I can't beat him easily.

Until you apply a mega-slam debuff to their ATK, DEF, or LUK. That's how I was able to exploit the one hardcore boss I made, and the satellite enemies as well, without realizing. Gotta make sure that getting that exploit to work is not easily done. I learned that the hard way.
