      The charge/animation times in LoM were to offset how easy it was to spam damage with weapon and skill-based attacks.

       

      They often cover longer distances or target wider areas, so having a small charge pentalty both balanced that and made it possible to evade damage. It also has a lot to do with having to set up your techs. Getting the timing down to know when it's worth trying, or better to bank it for the time being.

       

      The core combat was made to be rather spammy on purpose in my opinion. I think they did this so that anyone could find a weapon style they liked and not have trouble with combat. The other aspects of the game somewhat unorthodox and I think they worried about popularity. This and new game plus feature spoke to me as ways to balance out how wishy-washy 1 file attempt can be. Missing quests, or artifacts, not feeling like you got to really level up monsters, etc.

       

      It sort of is what it is. They wanted the player to really be able to submerse themselves into the world, and the management of their gear, combat strategies, and homestead. It was an early precursor to the sytle of mechanics we see in games like Skyrim today.

       

      To me it isn't so broken. The AI logic for enemies and monsters is the worst of it, and you can almost feel they dialed it back to make it more playable.

      If the charge animation times weren't like 3 seconds long, I can see where you are coming from, but as is I didn't get that impression at all. To me it just seems blatantly unfinished and lazily balanced. That's really the core issue with the game, it really does feel like it was never really finished and just kinda pushed out before it's ready. I mean you could be right about the intentions behind those design elements and all, but I still don't think the implementation was very good.

      It contributed toward a combat system that was just as elegant and sophisticated as the rest of the game. -shrugs- Again if you never played 2P arena at Geo, I can see not getting it.
