I got permission from Tsarmina for this! Yay! Okay, welcome to this workshop! I tried finding an art thread that is dedicated solely to studies of people, and not the individual/OP. This is mainly a thread for displaying your studies, if you want to share your thoughts on people's works, giving and receiving feedback on the things you post here. Everyone's welcome to post their studies regardless of skill-level. Giving other artists feedback will be very much appreciated. Of course, that goes without saying, I'll also do my best to help people out. For starters, a practice that I do a lot, is gesture drawing! I've only just begun practicing this stuff and I wish I did it when I first started art. A good start would be to draw a pose in 5 minutes. The main point of this is to capture human flow and movement. Once you can do that quickly, you can then begin refining the anatomy. I've still not perfected this, as you can see, but it's a really good practice. This was my first time doing it. It looked so stiff. Compared to my very recent one! It looks a lot better now but I still have a ways to go. The main thing to forget is the contour! (I'm not a very good example.) There are a lot of gesture drawing websites out there like quickposes or pixelovely that helps me practice. Try it out if you want =D. (Heavily inspired by another forum that I frequent.)

Hello folks! This here is a specially drawn concept work for the main character of my game, Treilin. She belongs to an obscure race of humanoids known as Tidelings, who reside in the depths of the great Mariphic Ocean, tucked away from the surface world. In the story, she and her brothers are tasked to find a cure for the disease that plagues the last of their dying race, and the beginning of their journey brings them onto dry land where they face many unknown and frightening dangers. This piece is meant to represent her curiosity and lack of knowledge regarding the mysterious world above.

Is there a list somewhere that shows the general dimensions for pixel art? I'd like to make custom full buildings and custom tiles and even character sprites, but I can't find any dimensions for those things and I'm afraid importing something with incorrect dimensions will disrupt the game.

Clove's art (+ would anybody be interested in commissions?)
Clove posted a topic in Literature Library
Hello everybody, I'm here to do my obligatory drawings dump. =) I really enjoy drawing but I'm always always trying to improve and become more sophisticated at it... Also I'm open to the idea of doing commissions for games, but I wanted to gauge interest first since I know my drawing style is a bit... I don't know, unconventional? Not to imply that I'm some avant-garde force of creation, but anyhow, I know it might not be to everyone's tastes/might not fit with your typical game. Anyway I hope you enjoy and find this interesting ^^ -
hello hello !! it is time to unleash my drawings on the world........... even if they're not very good, i'm pretty h*cking proud of them they're all sets for my upcoming (eventually (in maybe a hundred years)) game, which is Very Very Tentatively titled something along the lines of "theomachy." (yes the game will be using busts, but i don't want to take up a massive amount of space with this post so i'm just posting the general-face bust and then the emoset ) also, the choice to use the "female" base for all characters is an executive choice on my part; i'm super super not a fan of the "male" looseleaf base so i just decided not to use it at all now that you've been bored with the intro, it's art time and that's all, folks! if you feel like critiquing, keep in mind it takes me many hours to do these because i'm not a very good artist, so critiques like "your eyes don't look realistic" are unfortunately not very helpful, because i'm not able to do realistic eyes ! other than that, i hope you like them [thumbs up]

So I've never been a huge fan of Anime/Cartoony stuff in general, and I'm not the van Gogh of Pixel Art. I've been thinking about adopting a more pixel-art style for my game - stuff like this: This feels actually plausible for me to draw. Right now, I can think of one drawback: characters will feel more indistinct. What do you think?

it has been approximately three years since i've picked up a pencil with intentions of creating artwork. that said, my hiatus is officially over. i will be posting my completed sketches in this thread. i typically work with mature content, but after deliberation with the powers that be, i will keep things pg-13. please leave any and all constructive criticism here, i assure you it's welcomed! i won't say how many, but if this thread receives enough likes and / or a above average rating (meaning there is a genuine interest in the quality and style i provide), i would be happy to begin creating full unique character sets for the community. sets to include: unique actor charaset unique actor face set with at least two expressions unique actor busts with at least two separate dynamic poses like it up if you think the community is lacking in quality resources. i believe i can help out with that, and i would be happy to give back to the community. the artwork: (just one for now) https://www.dropbox.com/s/ohgf3i1bco5qbv4/scan.jpg?dl=0

The whole "Video Games as Art" debate again... and is gaming really still "in it's infancy"?
Kayzee posted a blog entry in KilloZapit's Magical Fairyland
I was reading this article and is sort of annoyed me. I mean I love Undertale and all, but I don't think it's a glorious subversive step forward for the medium as a whole that will lead to the holy path of being recognized as a legitimate art form or anything like that. And frankly I think it's kind of insulting to every game that came before imply it is. Undertale is a fantastically well-written game that is both extremely funny and heartrending with some interesting subversive elements, but it isn't really anything new. It's not like we haven't had fantastically well written games that are both extremely funny and heartrending before, like take Star Control 2 for example (to say nothing of Undertale's obvious inspiration). And it's not like we haven't had games that have done extremely screwy subversive things before, like take Spec Ops: The Line and Irisu Syndrome! ( I think the Undertale demo's trick of fiddling with the manual as you play was probably directly inspired by this game actually, and possible other things) for example. I would like to restate something I have said time and time again. It probably doesn't need to be said, but here we go. Anyone who doesn't think video games can be art is completely ignorant about what art actually is. Art is simply anything that is deliberately used to make a statement and/or invoke an experience. That's all it is, all it ever was, and all it ever will be. Anything can be art if used the right way. There is no secret ultimate authority or cabal who decides what is or is not art, and you don't get to decide to exclude it for whatever arbitrary reason you want. If the author intends to make an artistic statement, it can be counted as art. Period. Video games have just as much claim to the tittle of art as film or books have. Just as much claim as paintings. Just as much claim as a stain on your shirt if you intend it to make a statement. Arguing what is or is not art is dumb and just makes people look ignorant or elitist or both. I don't care what so and so said, no matter how famous or accomplished they are. If they don't understand this basic fact they are wrong. Okay now that we are all on the same page about what art actually is, why is it that people have trouble counting video games as art in the same ways movies and books are? Because to some people, just being art isn't enough, nor is being popular. No, to some people, you need a whole culture of critics and analysis that goes along with the art that elevates it to a level worth caring about. Which is fair enough. No one is going to care much about that stain on your shirt unless other people are talking about it and telling others why it is important. This is what divides art and "High Art", the art that people actually care about and talk about. I mean someone can draw super detailed amazing fanart and put it on the Internet for all to see, but it's probably going to be another piece of art in a flood off stuff very few people care about no matter how amazing it is. The fact is, no matter how many people will want to think otherwise, art is disposable and not vary valuable on it's own. You need a critical educated culture of people who appreciate and make commentary on things to make something worth paying attention to. Thing is though, video games HAVE that culture. People like me who grew up on an spend their life obsessing over every aspect of gaming are that culture, the same way film buffs are the same for moves. Video games are just starting to sneak in to the academic world as a serious field of study, but they are steadily gaining ground in that arena. Youtube is filled with people who will pick apart and analyze every aspect of a game in insightful and educated ways. So why is it that people still seem to be debating including video games as an art form every bit the equal of film or books? I have heard the excuse time and time again that video games is a medium still in it's infancy. I disagree. I don't think it has been since at leas the days of the NES. If video gaming isn't already an adult, it is in at least just getting past it's awkward teenage years and is on it's way to collage... where while the industry part of it parties and tries to get laid as much as possible while pissing away it's inhabitance and struggles to pass it's classes, the part that actually cares about the games is actually working and learning and expanding it's horizons and contributing to a better tomorrow. Yeah I know video games are a young medium compared to others, but that doesn't really matter that much. It's not like the moment people decided to make video games a thing they had to completely reinvent everything they knew about art. It's not like everyone who ever wanted to work on games suddenly forgot about all their language skills or about art theory. Even the technical side of it was mostly grounded in math and computer science which had long been studied. Just film and television borrowed techniques meant for theater, photography, radio, and others as well as inventing it's own tricks, so do video games borrow from traditional board games, computer simulation, film, books, and all sorts of other places as well as inventing it's own ticks. For games technology was the most limiting factor for a long long time, and people still made amazing things with very little. Go back and look at some NES classics, like the original Legend off Zelda for example. Everything in the first Zelda was focused on providing a particular feeling of wonder and adventure, of recreating the feeling that author had of exploring and finding hidden caves as a kid. How is that not art? How is that not meaningful? And I personally think the first Zelda, actually provided the best emulation of that feeling that the Zelda series ever has. I dare say a lot of older games are even more artistic and better expressions of the medium then most games today which have tried to become too much like films or books. No the simple fact is, video games are not in their infancy and haven't been for a long time. They just haven't yet been rooted into generations of traditional ideas about what media is and are therefor targeted by old media supporters for taking attention away from what they like. That's all it is. I don't see why I should give the whining of that dying subculture any attention, but I guess it feels nice to rant about it sometimes. -
(M7A1 Justicar IFV ingame sprite & sketch) + Rei's Art Dump + --- Back to RPG making after a while of inactivity- I've been lurking this forum for a while ever since RRR and the RMVX site went down but I haven't really been a community participant ;-; Anyway, though it isn't a proper introduction for the forums, I guess I can say I'm an aspiring concept artist, writer & game designer who works on RPG Maker stuff sometimes. I'll go by the name of Rei here since it's one of my more common aliases. Here's some military vehicle concepts & avant-garde fashion illustrations for my current project (in addition to the IFV above): --- Axel casual outfit: Gemma casual outfit: Revolutionary Army soldier: Ezekiel Assault Tank:

Outmode - Videogame Band (UPDATE: Music Video Finished!)
AdamSakuru posted a topic in Literature Library
(From left to right) D6 the Drummer, Sheela the Bass Guitarist, Babalola the Vocalist and Acid the Keyboardist. Outmode is a gorillaz-esque, animated band that is catered to video games. The band themselves are not the focus of their music videos, rather, they play the music that takes place over the narratives in them. The stories play out in the form of cutscenes and animated video game footage. So It doesn't just LOOK like a video game, it also behaves like it's a real one! Animated over three months, Panoram Heist tells the story of a crook who's looking to make some easy cash. He makes the mistake of stealing the cash register from a bar that Outmode is playing at. He gets the attention of the bartender....as well as the local authorities. Here's the first music video so far: -

P.D: Feel free to use them on your games, you don't have to credit me if you do!

Greetings! I have decided to start fresh, scrapping the old notes of the Lost Project mentioned in the previous post. I was in a different time and place way back when I started that one, so to recapture it sounds a bit like an effort in futility. Work has begun on developing a new world with entirely different actors, though I'd be lying if I didn't admit to keeping a handful of aspects from the old. In leafing through my notebook, I found a few that I am rather fond of. Stepping stones, perhaps. In doing this, I have also decided to avoid the use of online resources for sprites and faces. You folks have put out some absolutely wonderful work, and it is nothing short of inspiring. As for making sprites, I can certainly handle that part on my own. Character faces, on the other hand, will be tricky for me. Part of the pleasure, I suppose, is figuring out how to pull it off with minimal artistic talent. I expect to request the assistance of an artist friend whose delicious ways with a digital pen are already coloring life into a separate project with me. I've been nothing short of impressed with his particular brand of creativity and intelligence, and it is a delight to bounce ideas off him. So, that is my direction as of now. The software will sit idle as I gather my thoughts, and try my hand at a little artwork this time around. When I have materials to begin building the database (now that I am refreshed on what is needed), only then will I turn it back on. This seems like a good approach, for me, and I am excited to try while learning a few new things. However, it is now time for real world work.

Reworking some of the character designs for my Soul Forge game. Some of these characters have gone through multiple redesigns others I have a pretty good grasp on what I want them to look like and they haven't changed since I first sketched them out. One particular character I've been unsatisfied with is a young girl named Dori. She's 14yrs old with long blonde hair, brown eyes, and wears a green dress. She's generally a happy-go-lucky person with an outspoken attitude. I've redrawn this girl like 3 times already. I'm the most satisfied with her latest reincarnation. Now I just need to make a sprite that generally reflects the picture of her that I've drawn out. Previous drawings of her did not reflect the personality I had imagined for her in my head. She looked unhappy and her clothing was too formal/stuffy. She's supposed to be a priestess in training so she has an advanced grasp on using "Light" magic but she's also surprisingly strong and prefers to attack using over sized hammers and clubs. The other thing I've been working on is a Mushroom Hunting side quest. The objective of the side quest is to collect a rare species of mushroom that happens to be sentient and return it to a guy who calls himself "The Mushroom Sage". He gives up rare items in return for the mushrooms collected. The trick to collecting the mushrooms is that you have to beat them in battle but doing so isn't so easy because they're really quick and immediately put up defensive barriers to protect against fire elemental attacks, which they are weak against. Furthermore, when their HP gets below 50% they will prioritize running away from the battle which does not count as a defeat for collecting the mushroom. It's a simple enough premise and the player will have multiple opportunities throughout the game to except quests from the Mushroom Sage. The more mushrooms you collect for the sage the rarer the items you receive for completing the quest. Certain rare armors and weapons will only be obtainable by completing these quests. My next order of business is to complete a cut scene I've been working on for almost a month. RL work/responsibilities keeps getting in the way but what can you do - bills must be paid.

I've observed a lot of great artists here who can draw perfectly without getting stuck, not sure if they were stuck when they get started with art; but I am deeply stuck and not sure where to get started with art. Drawing is my one of two interests and my wish and goal is to provide my skills to others for helping them to develop their projects and my skills can also help my own projects as well. However, if you're an artist and do digital art, I'd like to know: How did you started with art? Did you tried to build your own art style first, learned human/creature anatomy first, or something else? How much time you spend in practicing for drawing? In how many years/months you became a perfect artist? What program you do use? Mouse or Pen tablet? Your art style? Anime, realistic, chibi or any custom? (I'd also like to know what other drawing styles are called) These things can help me where to begin and how to begin a good artist, in case you'd like to know, here's some of my artistic details: Learning since 4 months Program Paint Tool SAI Art style Painterly style Tool Pen tablet Please feel free to correct me on anything I've mentioned. Thank you very much!
