  1. So I've been doing a lot of world building lately, and I decided to document the steps and systems I've used to make my worlds full (and hopefully memorable). Step 1-Create nations. The biggest thing I see that doesn't make most game-world memorables is the lack of interesting countries, they either have cities or continents,or if they're nations, its usually just places called "The alliance" "The federation" or "The empire" this is just lazy. Most countries end with a -ia,-a or an -an,try to make something along these lines,or anything really, just let your creative side shine! Bonus step-Create flags Flags are pretty easy to make, but try to make them reflect your countries culture. Step 2-Create cultures and politics. Create cultures for these nations, weather they're fully original or derivative, its up to you! A few things you may want to check when making the cultures are- What do they eat? What do the drink? What are their dominant gender? (Male or female) Why is that their dominant gender? (Its not sexist if you write it right) What are their stances on outsiders/foreigners? Why is that their stance? How do they act towards each other? Then of course they're a ton of little misc things you can add in their, like in Tales of eternia, kids of the alien race grow up there own house, away from their parents. Now for the politics, here are few things you may want to check- What are the parties? (Or candidates) Are they democracy, kingdom, principality, empire etc..? What is the history behind that? I.E Why are they a democracy? (No black and white answers!) How involved are the politics? Remember, politics reflect the country. Step 3-Religion,and its not always the true religion. What religion do the people in these countries believe in? Are they monolithic or polylithic? Who is their chief god? And their devil-like figure? Diabolo,Yama,Loki etc. An example of the religion I a few days ago. Note:The religion doesn't have to be the major aspect of your game, and the devil-figure doesn't have to be the major villain or anything,it could just be used as a detail to help build your world. Step 4-Creating a map. Look at a world map, then look at your world, create contients first, then draw the countries into them, its like jigsaw puzzles, only with millions of people! But on a serious note, create the world map on paper (or MS paint) then add in your nations, then translate it to your project. Here's a early (but kind of bad) example of my first map like this. If you want, you could just deconstruct an actual country/continent/region and edit it to be your basis if you want. Bonus step-Create a naming language A naming language is a simple thing, basically its a small table of words with various meanings, look at U.S (or your countries) map of cities and see how they use normal worlds to describe there city (for example,I live in the triangle area NC,between High point and Greensboro). Step 5-Creating a writing system. Okay, making a language is very time consuming and pretty hard (albeit pretty fun), but making a writing system fares a bit easier, and you can always make the excuse that they're language is simply translated into english or what ever language the game is written in. Making a writing system can be done in two different ways. (Well probably more but Idk what) Drawing This requires some artistic talent and memorization to be a full alphabet/script/syllabary etc,and you might run into some issues in terms of spelling. Making the font This one may be a bit easier to do for the non-artistic type of people (and the method I use),while they're a few different font making software, this is the one I use. Its simple, easy and works in a browser. Drawing inspiration for them I see you, trying to either use Chinese,Japanese or Greek as your basis, thats pretty uncreative I'm sorry to say,but heres a few other writing systems to draw inspiration from Cherokee Burmese Nsibidi Dongba Kryptonian (Yes from superman) Those are a couple different writing systems that I found interesting. --- So I hope you guys found that useful! Feel free to ask any questions!
  2. I've started tinkering on RPGMaker again ever since I worked on this little pet project of mine. I was supposed to make a series of short stories set in an urban fantasy setting, and I had jotted down almost all of the stuff that I wanted to include in it. Lore, characters, affiliations, overall themes, and whatever plotlines that seemed crazy enough to work. And, somewhere along the way, I realized that I wasn't making a story pitch anymore, instead I think I've made enough for a freaking board game. Enough to base an entire world on. So, I decided to try making a game based on what I've established for my works. Nothing solid yet though. Just making a few choice locations, characters, and scenarios so far then see if I can use them for an actual game later. If anything, I want to make this game-project as open-ended as a wide open sandbox RPG, stressing on exploration and community-building in a world where making and keeping connections (similar to Persona 3's Social Linking) is the only way to get through. I would also use it as an exercise in playing with, deconstructing, reconstructing, discussing, and lampshade-hanging several Eastern RPG tropes and mechanics that I've grown up with. I can't promise anything concrete yet, but so far the game would involve a silent protagonist, a newcomer to the big city, integrating himself in the living, thriving metropolis as well as the magic community hidden in it. Also, there is no plot. I repeat, no goddamn plot. No world-ending event, no evil overlord, no demonic invasion. Nothing that would ever need the help of a "chosen one". There's just you, the city, and all the ways you could ruin it, rule over it, or leave it as is. In other words, you can cause all those things mentioned earlier if you want. I would also like to explore and use these certain mechanics in the game: *A "mana pool"-system. Would work as a second form of currency, except that it would deplete until it fills your HP and MP bar to full. Can only be replenished by doing side jobs and missions with the magic community. *An equipment- and statbuff-based progression system where the player relies more on customizable buffs and weaponry instead of character classes and leveling up. The player uses the mana from said mana pool for this, as well as the next two mechanics. A "reputation/notoriety" meter that would gauge how much the player is well-known/loved/feared/respected in the magic community depending on your choice of behaviour and friends. You could gain or lose certain items and characters depending on how lawful/chaotic/whatever you are. > I think I can make this work using Events. A magic "Favor" system connected to the previous one, in which you gain the favor of certain lower-myth creatures, fellow magic-users, and even God-like beings if you ever get the latter's unwanted attention to learn new forms of magic. > again, Events, and maybe some tinkering in the Item and Equipment pages. *A "journal" option in the menu where we can keep track of events, past jobs, and connections. *I'd like some help from any of the programmers here in the RPGMaker forum if they can help whip up some of these marked mechanics like this for me. Thanks. I'm using this exercise as a way to work out a certain world view I've developed these past few months during my depression. I'm also hoping that this would also help me get me back on my feet again and help me deal with whatever life throws at me again. That's what I have in mind for my game as of this time. I'd love to hear some comments and critiques, if any
  3. Innominate is a story that takes place in my collection of stories that is listed as the Lobithian Collection. Before I can get into Innominate and it's actual features characters and story, I'm going to post this big old fatty fat. NOTE: If I see someone nabbing these, I would be a very sad seal :c I'm putting a lot of trust in this blog that my stuff wont be stolen, and I feel cozy enough to actually be posting these informations. Lobithia: This is a world oozing with magic, created by beings known as the Sphere whom outright made the life on the small flat world. This is where many of my stories take place, and Innominate is no different. I will not post too much information on Lobithia, as it's hard to explain a whole world rich with history and races, that and the Lobithians meatier collections dives much more into the world and it's set laws. But here are the basics that are needed to know. Magic: Everyone (except for a race depicted below) has magic. The animals have magic. The trees, the water, the flowers, the rocks, food, your bed, all have magic. There is no hiding from it, there is very little places where there is no magic. This is their life. But magic is not something that can make everything and anything they need here. The Sphere put rules to their magic, and how far they can actually take the magic, and essentually there is a list of the spells that can be cased... then there are the Forbidden Spells. Forbidden Spells: Now this isn't put too much into Innominate, but I will list them with quick blurbs because this is the biggest boundry of Lobithia. Teleportation: Lobithians cannot teleport from one place to another. Shifting: Lobithians cannot change their physical forms from a human to a bird. This law is only broken by the Black Bloods and Dragons because the Sphere allowed it for them to. Mind Magic: Lobithians cannot read anothers mind, control another persons mind with magic, put thoughts into others mind, etc. Levitation: Lobithians cannot magically lift. They can move things, but lifting and keeping it there as a hover cannot be done. Death and Life: A Lobithian cannot automatically kill another with a spell, or revive a dead Lobithian. They have been put into place by their creators... The Sphere: God like beings that watch and have created all of Lobithia. They sometimes appear and help those who ask, or if they're in the mood, or even if given a piece of the summoner as payment. The highest of the Lobithians are named after countries in Lobithia and they pretty much stay in those certian countries since they where fashioned around what they wanted. Highest One(Ber) is the most favored Sphere in all Lobithia, and is considered the leader Sphere thanks to it's power being beyond the other Sphere. The Core: Depending on the context, the Core is pretty much Lobithians version of Hell, or the gemstones in the chest of the Black Bloods, or even the gemstones of the Sphere. Races: Humans: All worlds have thier humans, or at least a take on them it seems, and Lobithia is no different. Key things about them though is that a Lobithians hair and eye color has no boundry and can be from a bright yellow to a deep purple. Depending on the country, they range in thier own heritage. This race is said though to have been made by a forgotten Sphere by the name of Falling, who vanished a bit after the actual creation of Lobithia. Dragons/Drag: They are a race that was brought into Lobithia rather then created to be on it. How they did and why is mainly hit in Innominate, so I wont go too deep into it thanks to the way the story plays out. Furin: They are a race that only appears in Innominate, and never in another Lobithian Chronical tale. But they are pretty much huminodes with some mammal animal features such as a rabbit or a bear. Strong fast and very defencive over their territories, they are not the stupid animals and take offence to that in ten fold. Created by a Sphere who was apparently walking along one day and wanted to give the little woodland creatures human bodies. Goyal: A race of 'gargoyals' created by a Sphere who carved them out of stone. The statues where so beautiful he wanted to bring them to life. They have horns, wings that they can't fly with, and long fleshy tails. They retain very human like looks, but often are just cool colors in their hair and eye colors. Arcana/Anglus: Twin races which where created from the 'tears' of Highest One itself, this race is the only race that knows how to work healing magic through song. The Arcana have black bat like wings and black tattoos, normally with black hair and always bright red eyes. While the Anglus are white feathery winged with feathered ears and are very pale colors in general, normally in the green. They can make their wings hide and they can fly thanks to magical spells woven into their wings. Rais: A race of spotted people who live on the islands of Rai, with the ability to breath underwater and see by motion. They can use their sight to locate any movement around them, almost like ripples in water. They are said to have been made by a clam Sphere who took it's pearl it made and used it to craft them. Black Bloods: The most hated and scorn race of all Lobithia, this all male race is born with a dark purple gemstone in its chest and have the ability to 'shift' into large predetors. They hunt humans, born from humans, and run very much on their insticts to hunt and kill. They take the appearance of very handsome men, to get close to thier target of young women. Said to have been created from the core of a dead Sphere. To many on Lobithia, any Black Blood is a monster no matter what. Course, they are all not this way... Curans: The second most hated, they are a race of blonde haired people who at one point in history insulted a Sphere who took away all their magic. All of it. They cannot feel, taste, cast any magic and actually absorbe it when they come into contact with it. They have been downgraded to slaves, and having a very low population thanks to their inability to live very well in a world made up of magic when they end up absorbing it. Drow: The last and final race are not actually locals from Lobithia itself, similar to the Dragons. Rather this dark skinned, long eared, white haired race came from a world which outright was distroyed. They are an odd race that break the magical laws of Lobithia with "magic that isn't magic". They can shapeshift, teleport, live extreamly long lives, mind control, levitiation, and much more. There are not many of them, and considered myths. The Countries: Now, here's a very old map that needs updating that I did around three/four years ago. The main important one for the Innominate project is Zul, both upper and lower parts of it. It -may- span to Tol or Ain, but not enough to affect the story. Maybe. This is a heavy fantasy world, low on technology and they thrive on magic being how they work and function. I think that's a good enough start to dive into my actual RPGmaker project, Innominate. Come back tomorrow for some starting information in that! I hope this isn't too spammy to post a blog post one in the same day, I admit I don't know blog... manners.
