Things and Story Types You Find in an RPG SoulPour777 Note: This is a part of my game architecture and design lessons in my website (however I was not able to upload it there just yet because of a slow connection with the site). I hope you'll find this interesting to look into and maybe give me feedback about it. Whenever you play RPGs, you'll probably stumble upon these elements, things or story types. They can be helpful if you want to make an RPGs, well, also you can base from it. They are actually common and present in some of the popular RPGs today. Sealed by the Great Light Theory - The world is naturally a peaceful town, but every 1000 years, the dark entity, a spiritual villain again breaks from the seal and wreaks havoc all over the land. Being the hero, you will be the one to stop the evil and throw him away or banish him from the world. (E.g. Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millenium) Airship on the Go! - Humans can't fly after all. In a technology based RPG, an airship would surely be present to travel through the sky. Badass Villain Lines- The badass villains on the game, especially some like rebels or right hand of the boss would always have the lines: "You fool, its time to die!", "Do you honestly believe you will kill me with those, you fool...", "Welcome to your Doom!". Castles are like dungeons, you never know where you are and when you'll reach the boss - Some RPG games features castles that are wide, hard to explore and there are mazes involved in it. You'll probably end up saving your game to see where you actually are and reach the end of that castle. That Adviser Law - When the game has a Royal Palace, King and Queen, the adviser who lives with the Kingdom is up to no good. Later on the game, you will discover that he was the man behind your hardships. Not all churches are good - The priest is some kind of a right hand of the villain. He hides with good and kind disguise, but actually an enemy. (E.g, The Adventures of Alundra) You are a Gladiator - A quest or a side story of the game will lead you to challenge an enemy in a ring or a coliseum. Of course, there will be people watching it, and your friends will cheer up for you. In my dying breath - Some major heroes in the game die, you'll end up watching the dying scene, some conversations, and some RPG games even display some graphical content of the characters crying and mourning for the one they loved. If the hero was killed by the villain, the leading hero always swears revenge. (E.g. Phantasy Star IV -The Death of Alys, Kick Master - The Death of Macren) Super Kawaii Pets - In some RPG Games, the player always would have this cute (Kawaii in Japanese) pets that has some abilities to heal the player, speak, advice you of what to do or where to go. These pets also have some transformation ability, that makes them some kind of legendary pets or entity. Hey I just met you - When the character is caught by some imperial guards and set to prison, some thief or master lockpicker would surely be there and befriend you. He or she sees you as some kind of a good friend, opens the prison gate and escapes with you. They would also become one of your party members along the way. (E.g. Slade of Shining Force 2) When we hear the dragon word - Whenever you play RPG games, the ones with the word dragon are actually the best equips you'll get. For example, Dragon Helm, Dragon Breatplate, Dragon Boots, Dragonslayer, Dragon Tear, Dragon Blade, Dragon Crown and many others. That dramatic song - Whenever you stumble upon one of the character's sad past story, some epic dramatic song surely plays. Mr. Scarface Theory - Whenever you meet a character in the game with some scar on his face, be assured that this guy has some sad past on where he got that scar. You'll end up knowing this in the middle of the game. Turns out it was from an injury saving his best friend or daughter in a disaster, or a duel to the death that shaped his family's life. Arnold Theory - Characters with big muscles or musclemen usually are the tanks of the party, the guys who can hold enormous swords or cannons or even dual heavy guns. Sleep and be healed - Sleep happens only for at least 3 seconds, some ME plays and you're all healed. usually, this happens in an Inn or the player's house. Graveyards of Secrets - Some graveyards, when you push the tombstone, a secret path to obtaining some magical weapon or item usually happens. Healing Magic Doesn't Work! - When a scene where the character can't heal their party member, believe me, that character will die soon afterwards. They don't attack me for I am an NPC - When you are in a dungeon and some old guy or group of travelers are inside, you're wondering why the monsters aren't attacking them. Of course they are NPCs, so you, the player / hero is the only one they'll probably attack and kill. Ancient Items - These ancient items appear in the game in the final part of the story, which the people believe, used by some ancient hero in defeating the villains long time ago. Chosen One - The major lead character happens to be a normal guy who doesn't care about what's going on to the world, one disaster happens and he becomes the chosen one by the gods to get rid of the powerful demon. My Homeland Rule - The story begins with you, the lead character as a normal guy of a certain tribe being oppressed by the other race or class. You'll end up being full of their tyranny and get the peace back to your beloved homeland. You build up group of brave heroes with you and kill the oppressors. (E.g. Battle Realms: Winter of the Wolf) Dad died - The main character's dad died when he / she was young. He / She now lives with his/her mother. This World is Rotten! - The main character is a guy without a past, then meets up with a band of new friends. Later on, he meets this weird guy who believes in his own laws, saying that this world is rotten and needs to be changed (according to his views of course). You'll end up facing him and asks you to join him. Refusing, you and he will battle to the death with your friends on your side in the end. Uh huh, yeah, Uh-huh - Some character in the game doesn't speak at all. He or She just stand there with you and fights. Super Saiyan Rule - You'll end up lacking the skills and power to defeat the Final Villain in the ending part of the game, then suddenly, some god or light shines in the sky to help you, and you become far stronger and crush the enemy in the end. Super Saiyan Rule 2 - You can transform into some kind of amazing guy for a short span of time, gaining abilities that far exceeds your normal skills. Lend me your energy! - The main character is weak, then suddenly, his friends / her friends lends their powers to him / her. Legends are true! - The legends told by the NPC in the game is 100% true. Commonly, these legends talks about a hero who defeated the villain. Later on, its decided that you're that hero's descendant. Be the Good or the Bad - Some RPG lets you choose where to go in the end, whether you join the enemy or stop them When we say 'Ancient' - When the game mentions about some Ancient artifact, believe me, those are the strongest weapon / item. Prepare for Trouble and Make it Double (Jessie and James / Musashi and Kojiro) Theory - There's this partner villain that you fight over and over again. They are actually some kind of clowns, weak and you don't even need to use powerful skills to beat them. They are some kind of trusted men by their boss set out to carry important missions. Instantaneous Transmission Technique / Son Goku Skill - Some of your playable character has a skill Teleport. They only work for towns or escaping a dungeon though. Effective Skills - When you use status changing skills to the enemies, they don't usually work. When the enemy uses it, it works 100%. Dungeons - Most dungeons has this waterfall. When you go there, you discover some item. Also, the dungeons will surely have puzzles in them. Common puzzle includes switches, torches to be lit in order, statues with weird designs, tombstones, pushing blocks, combination of doors, looping rooms (you have to go in order to get out of that loop). Escape Before It's Too Late! - When you defeat this large monster on a dungeon, 100% of the time the dungeon collapses. You'll end up seeing the screen shake. Though cliche, this creates some escape scenes you'll probably want to play. Tell me I'm Beautiful! - You'll meet this NPC asking you if she's attractive or beautiful. I advice you to act politely and answer her "yes". She'll give you some precious item. Epic Character - Some epic character joins your party. You'd be surprised that their skills are 100 times cooler than your main character's skills. The sad part is they are only playable for a short span of time. Look at the Moon - Some RPG has some scene one night where the character can't sleep, decides to go out and gaze at the moon. A hot chick character asks the guy if he can't also sleep. She joins him gazing at the moon. Seconds later, they fall in love. Father, where art thou? - When the main character's father is missing and your mother won't tell you anything about him, you'll end up discovering that your father is involved with something big. Well in the end of the game you'll discover he is the main villain. That Epic Shopkeeper - When the wold finally falls apart into a Dystopian case, where every race of the humanity has fallen victim to the villain, there's this shopkeeper in the final town or dungeon of the game, standing there, a survivor and sells you the strongest equips, as if he doesn't care humanity has lost its generation. Villain's Final Resolve - The final enemy or villain in the final battle usually starts off as weak and easy to defeat. Then you come to rebattle it again, now with its true form. You'll be usually surprised because it may turn out to be a devilish figure, then some epic raging battle BGM starts to play. Some other games feature an Angelic form of the final boss and plays some church or choir BGM along the battle phase. That's it for now! I am not saying you should avoid them, but they are clearly elements you may want to apply or adapt and make your own versions. These are quite helpful in molding one actual RPG. Some may say its cliche (which actually is), I guess you'll surely put them up.

Whenever we talk about RPG and you ever decide to make one, you’ll probably stumble upon the question “What items should my game have?â€. This lesson takes you to know the common or standard rpg items you would probably see in most games. Healing Items – These items purpose is to heal or restore one or more targets (of the player’s party) HP and MP. Some RPG calls it SP or AP for the Mana. It also comes in different variations such as the item can heal one target or the whole of the party, heals at least 25%, 50% and 100% of the target’s HP or MP. Examples: For HP: Healing Herb Healing Potion For Mana: Mana Seed Mana Potion Ether For Both: Elixir – Heals HP and MP at 50% rate. Full Rejuvenating Potion – Heals HP and MP to full. Cures for Status Changes – The purpose of these items is to cure any status changes inflicted to one or more members of the party. Common status changes are: Blindness (lessens accuracy), Silence (character can not use spells), Paralysis (character can not move), Stun (stops movement for a number of turns), Poison (depletes HP per turn), Death (character has fainted and unable to battle), and Burns (depletes HP per turn). Examples: Antidote – Cures poison. Croc Tear – Cures blindness. Mobilizer – Cures paralysis and stun. Jabbergrass – Cures Silence. Panacea – Cures all Status Changes. Ammonia – Revives a fainted ally. Battle Items – The purpose of these items is to temporarily boost a character’s status. They come in different rates, versions or per turns. These can also be items that boosts up an Element Affinity for the character. Examples: Life Bar – Temporarily adds 100 to HP in Battle. Mana Food – Temporarily adds 100 to MP in Battle. Power Seed – Boosts up Attack Power for 5 turns. Agility Seed – Boosts up Agility for 5 turns. Defense Seed – Boosts up Defense for 5 turns. Magic Seed – Boosts up Magical Attacks for 5 turns. Fire Scroll – Boosts up Fire Affinity magic. Wind Scroll – Boosts up Wind Affinity magic. Water Scroll – Boosts up Water Affinity magic. Earth Scroll – Boosts up Earth Affinity magic. Holy Scroll – Boosts up Holy Affinity magic. Casting Items – The purpose of these items is to cast a magic / spell / special attack when they are used inside battle. The players will need this if they want to replicate magical attacks that their characters already have, but to conserve their MP / AP for a more significant battle. Molotov – Casts Fire Magic. Weathervane – Casts Wind Magic. Water Bomb – Casts Water Magic. Icicle – Casts Ice Magic. Dynamite – Casts Earth Magic. Warding Items – The purpose of these items is to repel or ward of Random or Map Enemy encounters. This is often used by players whenever they want to explore the map without getting disturbed by enemies that randomly attacks the player. Their lasting power maybe counted by how many steps the characters already made or based on time. Examples: Repel – Wards off enemies. Duration: 50 steps. Ultra Repel – Wards off enemies. Duration 100 steps. Warding Spray – Wards off enemies. Duration: 5 minutes. Booster Items – The purpose of these items is to Permanently boost or add points to one character’s status. Examples: Life Shard – Permanently adds 10 to HP. Magic Shard – Permanently adds 10 to MP. Power Food – Permanently adds 1 to Strength. Protein – Permanently adds 1 to Defense. Shallow Eye – Permanently adds 1 to Agility. Fish Head – Permanently adds 1 to Wisdom. Forging Items – These items serves as ingredients for forging a powerful weapon or armor or any magical material. Metal Scraps Iron Steel Silver Gold Dirty Filter Glass Shard Old Tire Burnt Plug Rusty Pipe These are some of the common RPG Items you can find. You will surely need them whenever you plan to create your own RPG some day. Most players will surely look for these kinds of items.
