  1. I've been building a sprite from scratch for a while now. The sprites I'd like to use are 36x48. I've encountered no problems with importing and using the sprite, but I don't like how it looks. I'm alright with the up and down - I can clean them up rather easily - but the left and right just look like a shuffle. I have a feeling this is due to the static frame in the middle, but I rather like the dynamic pose. Is there another way to use the pose while substituting a proper static frame? Perhaps an idle "animation" defaulting to this pose? I've been getting carpel tunnel over this for four hours now. Like, I fear for my fingers. Anything I can do about this? (The sprite issue, not the fingers.)
  2. There are several different answers to these questions from several different sources. As one or two of you may know, I'm focusing on art right now before I begin to actually work with the game software itself, since that requires me to essentially learn an entirely new field, but I have experience in art and storytelling. So, I'll have specific questions over the next month or so concerning pixel art (since the general questions have mostly been answered). 1. What is the difference between a "character portrait" and an "emotion sheet"? Is the latter the technical term for it? I'm aware that the latter is generally 384x192, consisting of eight portraits, but I've so far been unable to differentiate between these two terms. For example, this is an early version of my male character's "emotion sheet" (or whatever it may be called): And here's an example custom (I think) "emotion sheet" I've found online: These are so different that I'm not sure whether I'm doing something incorrectly. Would it be wiser to create a fuller portrait first, and then crop and edit the face region? Or does my version look stylized enough that a normal player would find it permissible (and hopefully not amateur)? 2. I've found "emotion sheets" that are different dimensions. Would this cause a technical problem in the game, and is it wise to continue using the dimensions I'm using? 3. Is there any critique you could give me about my attempt at an "emotion sheet?" It seems to be profoundly more pixellated than the other example image, and although that's passable, since the style of the game is rather pixelly, but I'd prefer some kind of smoothness to the image as well, and I've tried several types of color variation and shading, but this is the best result I've gotten so far. I don't have professional instruments. Thank you for reading my post.
  3. Is there a list somewhere that shows the general dimensions for pixel art? I'd like to make custom full buildings and custom tiles and even character sprites, but I can't find any dimensions for those things and I'm afraid importing something with incorrect dimensions will disrupt the game.
  4. Hi there, I've recently discovered that my items that are supposed to completely recover a character/the whole party (like Final Fantasy's Elixir and Megalixir) don't work on dead characters... I've set the items to remove Death and all other statuses, and restore 100% HP and MP, but I can only get it to work on either ONLY living characters, or ONLY dead characters. Any ideas how I might get around that? Preferably without a script, but willing to use one if that's the only way. Thanks for your time!
  5. Hello everyone, I need a hand with something. I want to make a game only using HP and magic, so the protagonist only has three bars: HP, Protection and Magic. How can I do this? (Note: the stats are in spanish; PV = HP, PM = MP). (Remember; I only want HP, Protection and Magic to show) Or, at least, how can I make my character very weak at the start/hide the bars I don't want? I can't really figure it out. Also, is it possible to delete the "(X) Has Appeared!" message when a battle starts? I want it to start instantly. Thanks.

Ok simply put, in the game I'm working on, when our Main character gets to this magical world she discovered that Battle in this world plays by certaine rules (turned based combat ala genral RPG) However, because she's from another world, she's not tied by these laws, and by being in combat with her, her team mates and opponents are also freed from these restrictions, so Basically I need to know if it's possible for the game to switch between battle systems? A turn based battle system for if the Main character is on the team. and a freeform battle system when she is.

    VX Ace or MV?

    Hello! I wasn't sure where to put this, so I hope it's in the right spot. I have a few pending games (check the spoiler in my signature) and I was wondering if it would be worth it to get MV or if I should stick to VX Ace! As such, I'd like to know the pros and cons of both makers so I can compare, contrast and, eventually, decide whether I'll use VX Ace or MV for the games. Thank you, in advance!
  8. Ok So Basically I love the Idea behind the last of us, I want to see it explored more. Now seeing how good it did it is possible naughty Dog will do a sequel But theres never a garentee. I want to make one. But I'm not sure whether it constitutes Theft. I'd Offer it for free, And it wouldn't involve any characters from the first one (except infected of course lol) Basically I'm setting it in England. A safe Zone in the North is over run by infected while the PC is out on a scavenging mission. so her and the survivors decide to travle south to find a new safe zone. Do you think that would be ok as long as I credit Every one and Make it for free?
  9. No matter what I do, I can't get the sprites on this sheet to not split. What's the proper size for this? How much space should be between these?
  10. Hi i 'm thinking a lot about it lately, if i should use message busts in my game or something else. I'm trying different techniques the last couple of days but i cannot decide quite yet. I do like the graphic busts but i do not love the message window that much. So maybe something else? I currently came up with this: Opinions? What do you think? Thanks for reading!

    Hello everyone

    Hello I am new to this community and i just wanted to say hello. also i was just wondering were i can post my completed game because every time i try to start a new topic it says that i can't.
  12. The process of getting my project topic moved to the Gaming Lounge has my head spinning. It says in the Gaming Room rules to report your game's topic to have it moved (and to NOT submit a duplicate topic), but in the Report section it gives you a strict warning to NOT use the Report method to communication with moderators for any reason except to report for questionable content. It's like being told to drive through an intersection only for traffic lights to stay red indefinitely. At the same time, in the rules + guidelines in the Submissions area, it says to specify the title of the game and 'Where to Move', i.e the Gaming Lounge or Masterpiece Theatre. Which is great! Except, I thought we weren't supposed to submit duplicate topics in Submissions just to have an existing game topic moved (instead we're supposed to report the topic or PM a moderator). Ultimately it seems like the best option is to just PM a moderator. I don't need my topic moved just yet, but it's gonna be very soon (likely before Monday). I feel the process of getting moved from The Showroom to Gaming Lounge (eventually Theatre) isn't clarified all that well. If reporting move requests is OK, perhaps adding an amendment to the Report function stating that move requests are exceptions? Or elaborate on the process of requesting a move in the Gaming Lounge rules?
  13. Hi! This is my very first post in these forums & I'd like to start with a question. Is going commercial with a finished game dangerous? I did some research on this topic & I'm less & less attracted to go commercial. First of all you need to make sure the recources you use are all licensed. If you use Celianna's tiles, you need to own vx and get permission from Celianna herself. If you use a photo editting program, you need to have bought it and be able to put a license up. If you use a music creation program, you need to buy the program includeing the sound pools. These need to be licensed for commercial use. After you did all this, it would be a shame not to pay someone to draw your portraits. Did I miss anything? Am I completely wrong about this? Please give some ideas Tnx in advance.
