Fishing System Design

Hey everyone. I am thinking of making a fishing script. I was just going to model it off of my event demo, but I realize with scripting I can do a few things more. My question is how would you like a fishing system to operate?

 

I can't do anything incredibly complex, but I can do a few simple fun systems I'm sure. Do you think it should be the rolling line like in the demo, (Mind you that also can be a nice minigame that can do a lot of other things) or should I make it something like a circle pond with 360 degree movement.

 

I mean there's a lot of mechanics we can talk about too, like how the fish should be caught. Maybe even just net catching. Or maybe expansions to the way the event demo plays out.

 

Input is appreciate, I'd definitely like to know how you'd like fishing to be done. Maybe it should just be a relaxing sit and wait thing, to sort of have a breather in a game, or more high-paced.

Yeah, so many ways it could be done. I guess might be good to mention fishing in games that I really enjoyed.

 

1. Breath of Fire 2.

The distance you cast is based on your timing hit on a fast-moving bar. The action was side view and the bait slowly floated down from where it splashed in the water and you could tug to bring it in slightly. If you managed to get the bait near a fish and he was interested in it (different fish like different bait) then it would grab hold and then a struggle happens with bars indicating how much stamina the fish has and the strength of your line before it will break.

 

2. Ocarina of Time

This one was kind of similar (although 3D...) in the fact that you could see your lure and need to try to position it to tempt fish.

 

Not saying copy these but I what I think appeals to me in fishing games is trying to lure the fish and also the variety of fish and knowledge that they need different baits to be tempted.

Not sure if this was going more complex than you were thinking... :P

I like the fishing system in Torchlight, simple and fast. If i wana fish in a game I'd like it to be quick but not too easy.

if galv's timed button script could be edited to be used outside battles it could be an interesting fishing system
