Face in progress: Apathetic Female

Recommended Posts

Base of a character I'm drawing - adding clothes currently (least favorite part). Looking for criticism on bone clothes, bone structure, and hair - stuff I don't know much about since I'm not a hair-stylist or fashion designer. Aiming to get to the point where my facesets can blend in and fool people to thinking it was part of RTP - although I'm trying to make older, mature characters in general.

Note: Anything I post on this website, I really don't mind if other people use them as long as they message me first so I know where my characters are getting a home. Most of my private work is offline anyway, so I don't mind giving a few things back to the community.

Uniform: "They let you into the academy?"

Armor: "That's all you've got, recruit? I am disappoint."
If treated as a jacket: "... Whatever."

the hair looks nice, good job.

the collar bone's have a nice separation distance, but that line above the right collar bone seems a little off, but im not sure which way, you may wanna play around with that line a little.

This definitely fits the VX Ace RTP quite well. Good job on that!

In terms of hair I've seen FAR crazier in terms of color and style, so I definitely like it very well. The only suggestion I would make is to have the hair flair outwards nearer to the base of the neck, sort of like how you have already.

The collarbone seems like it's either projecting forward or is shifted a bit too much to the left. The shape is good, but the placement seems off-center to me.

This is a bit of a nitpick, but I think the neck could be a bit thicker as well. That's just my opinion though, it looks fine on its own.

If you ask me I think it looks nice, and actually keeps to the style of RTP very well. In some ways, it actually looks a bit more polished.

For the hair, some people may feel odd about the color, I actually think it looks interesting though. Its unique but it's not ridiculous, and I like that a lot. I would maybe recommend putting a bit more in the back though.

The bone structure for the most part also works but I feel like the neck should be a little bit wider. Maybe it's just me, but the way it angles as well as how thin it makes it looks very tense. Almost like it's constricting her or something.

Overall, while it could use a bit of touching up, I think it looks great.

This is really good! It matches the RTP so much. How do you do it? I want to learn how to do it because my style is so different from it ;-;

Thanks for the advice. I fixed it up using the responses which will help a bust portrait if I make one down the line. I can change the color of the hair pretty easily by changing the hue, too.

RTP style: Use the same coloring, shading, line blending, and line thickness that they use. I started off following this guide from Soruve - a popular artist in the VX community: http://rmgamematerial.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/tutorial.png  I still leave it on in a separate window for reference while I'm coloring.

The sketch and inks are the hardest though - you can't clone the amount of experience the original artist has. I leave some of the ACE portraits on the side to see how I can make them similar. Your style is pretty spectacular, though, so I wouldn't try changing that. Just following that coloring guide might get rid of that "out-of-place" effect. I use vectors to draw since I have a shaky hand, and although it looks very polished, it's inefficient as hell and probably takes 10 times longer than doing it normally. I'd recommend using vectors for big features and the silhouette though.

P.S. If you think your inks are thick enough... they probably aren't thick enough. Your art gets squished to a 96x96 square so you kind of have to change the line thickness appropriately.

lol adding clothing is the least favorite part.

I wouldn't mind naked RTP characters in my project.

It's like a cross between the facial structure of RTP Ulrika with the hair color of Elicia. Ulicia?

Who wouldn't want naked RTP characters? haha no really though Horseman, This is very well done. I like that you have the look of the RTP down so well, yet the character has her own unique look and appeal. I'm not really an artist so I have no general advice for you. Keep up the good work.

I actually meant clothes are incredibly difficult to draw, but it was misinterpreted  -__-);

I've only practiced drawing faces and general body shape so far, so clothes take much more effort. That's why I'm really reluctant to draw full busts unless I have 20+ hours of spare time. Speaking of which, finished one outfit, and I wanted to draw an armored knight version before I take a break from this character.

Look who you're talking to: Arin, the Eloquent Perverted Panty Shot Queen and H-Game Enthusiast.

I think it would look nice if she had some loops in her ears, or some kind of earring. Or any kind of jewelry, really; it would look a little bland, even with a full get-up of clothes.
