Basic Male Sprite + Mapping Style

Recommended Posts

So for my game, I'm using a painterly style for the maps, as shown below. I'm taking huge inspiration from Bastion, and I really hope that I can pull it off.

What I'm concerned with for the game is that the style of the sprites and the style of the maps won't sync up very well. I posted the basic male sprite I'm gonna be using as an attachment.

Any critiques / suggestions for blending the two will be greatly appreciated.

I think one thing thats important to acknowledge is also how we're different then Bastion. For one, Bastion goes crazy with colors. Every where you go in that game theres almost always a million colors on screen. Also, even though Bastion does not try to be realistic, it does pay attention very often to minor details. (It won't show every tile but it'll show some)

I think the sprite will work alright, but if it doesn't , then there might be some reasons. Aside from having different styles, I think thats the only reason the sprite may not fit. While the sprite pays attention to very minor details, the map focuses more on being stylized.

Aside from the sorta emptyness of the map, it's also very basic in terms of detail. I think if we were to either stylize the sprite more with the sacrifice of slightly less detail, or add slightly more detail to the map. (As well as more stuff in general..) then it'd be great.

I do believe that what we have now is great, but it'd be nice to find other ways to improve.

That map really does look too good for sprites. You'd need an entirely different resource to draw from to make them work together. To make them a bit closer in style, I'd try a Gauassian Blur on the sprite or sprite outline to see if that does any good, but techniques like this aren't very good for small pictures. Bastion plays off of HD, so they have a ton of pixels to work with to decorate their sprites in different styles whereas RPG maker is stuck with a stiff blocky style.
