A new sprite template (Full Template)

I've decided to make a unique template for my sprite tutorials I'm working on. It is actually my first time doing so, I've free formed a few times in the past, but anyway, was hoping on some feedback. This is about twice the size of the rtp characters, just a bit under actually. He works well within the tilesets though.

I decided to try something bold and unheard of, I gave him a neck.

What are those two dark dots near his pelvis? It looks weird.

 

Consider on havin an extra highlight for the outline, too. It looks kind of flat right now.

It's good overall.  Two things though.

 

1:  His face looks a little square.  On the lower part of his face, it looks prominently like a rectangle.  On the lightest colored block there, in the bottom corners, there needs to be a pixel of the next darkest shade.  It'll take away that block-jaw he has.

 

2.  His body is literally a block.  Even the RTP sprites have a rounder shape to them, and they are tiny.  You need to pull in the sides, just below the rib cage, slightly in.  Even pixelated characters still have some roundness to them.

I made some adjustments based on the useful tips from everybody, thanks. I'm not sure why those two darker blocks were near the pelvis, I think I wasn't paying attention there, my concern was the legs. Anyway here is the updated version.

I would try making the waist a little smaller and maybe adding some curves to the highlights and shadows on the chest. Like a downward curve, I know I'm not being very clear. But instead of having a straight line --------- try to make it show more depth with curves like u shaped. I'm not a good spriter though so disregard this if you wish lol

I've made some real progress with this template, I think he's turning out well, but some opinions on it are appreciated.

Hmm, the sideview looks like he's leaning to the side, like we're looking at him from below. The front view's head looks a lil wide.

If you know what I mean? also played with the hand a lil to give ya some ideas :)

So I finally completed the first of these templates, The Man. I ask that no one uses this yet. Once Spirit Timer is out and I've completed the other three templates, Woman, Child and Elder. I will release them as a set that people can use. Anyway, opinions would still be nice on this. Mind the shading, it isn't my best work.

Why is he looking up from all angles in which the eyes are visible? Shouldn't he be looking straight ahead so he doesn't bump into things?

 

Might be the shine on the eyes causing this possible illusion.

Actually it has a lot more to do with that his eyes are so high up. Lowering them down by just a pixel or two, should help solve this.

That looks better now, the middle one is still a little bit odd in regards to the eyes but it's nothing to worry about I think.

Hrm that is odd, they have the exact same head lol. Maybe it's just in reference to the body.

I don't know why it just somehow looks odd to me despite the head being the same - Still, like I mentioned it's nothing to worry about considering how minor it is.

 

It's good work regardless of the minor oddity Shaddow.

I really like it, Shadow! :) I am not a sprite expert, but from what I see with the last one, it looks fine. I like that it is taller than the RTP but not as huge as the Mack ones are. I also like that the shape is a little more realistic. I am also basing this on the completed sprite in the Spirit Timer thread, assuming that it uses the same template. ^_^

It is indeed, I'm using this template for all our sprites for SMC Games from now on.
