Pokemon Sprites - Opinions appreciated

Recommended Posts

So I've designed a pokemon tabletop rpg, that is currently going through beta testing, within that I've created a lot of fakemon, so I thought that I would start to sprite them, this is the first of them. Opinions would be lovely.

Name: Flarrel

National Pokedex Number: 650

Type: Fire

Ability: Flash Fire: Activates when user is hit by a damaging Fire-type move (including Fire-type Hidden Power). Once activated, user’s Fire-type moves deal 1.5 times damage. While this ability is in effect, this Pokémon is immune to damage from Fire-type attacks and Fire-type Hidden Power (accuracy and effect from these moves are ignored). For Fire-type Pokémon with this ability, Will-O-Wisp activates this ability without having an effect. If a non-Fire-type Pokémon has this ability, Will-O-Wisp will activate the ability and will have no effect.

Classification: Hibernation Pokemon

Height: 1' 04"

Weight: 6.2 lbs

Description: A tiny squirrel-like pokemon that is made entirely of flames, it's small body provides heat constantly.

Pokedex Entry: A small pokemon that is very popular in the colder climates of the world. It's tiny body constantly provides heat and it will only burn when the Flarrel wants to. When it goes into hibernation it's body cools down to embers.

Looks good though i think it could use a bit more something to it besides just flames :)

To be quite frank, I don't like it.  The idea of a flaming squirrel isn't bad, rather quirky, but this execution could use some work.

How many Pokemon are fully consumed in flames?  None.  Moltres is the closest to full on flaming body, but there are parts that are distinguishable solid body.  The ears, the paws and the tail are the only things that should be on fire.  Maybe not even the ears.  Everything else flaming pulls away from the quality of this sprite.

Also, his face seems to be facing straight at the screen, when at the very least his eyes should be focusing at the lower left-hand corner (its opponent).  The perspective of the face was actually the first thing that I seen.  It's a bit too distracting.

I agree with the face, something felt very off about it and I couldn't place it.

I've had a few other opinions that he doesn't look cuddly enough to be a pokemon, so I'm considering a version of him where only his tail and possibly his ears are flaming. I'll try my hand at it tonight and see what I come up with.

Edit: Yes there will be more to come, if I can get it correct, there will be at least another 23 coming.

This looks really good Shaddow! ♥

I am so uncreative when it comes to monsters so this really amazes me :)
Keep up the good work!

It looks awesome, very unique because it is completely made of fire.

One thing I noticed is there doesn't appear to be as much definition to the fire on the face as there is on the tail/body.  Also, something about the shapping between the ears seems off to me, maybe not round enough, but that;s just a personal opinion.

Excellent work, I look forward to seeing what others you have in store.

I like the idea but it doesn't look like a pokemon.

Try leaving some spots out of fire or even adding something unique like big paws or a bigger tail, because technically it's just a squirrel on fire.

(but well, it's not like the first 150 pokemon are that original either... so w/e)

Also, use real pokemon as references for coloring the fire.

Use ponyta or moltres, for example.

Pokemon tend to have a real-life history behind them, via Squirtle a Turtle, Deliberd - Santa Claus, etc.

That aside, having a squirrel in the embodiment of flames looks odd, not saying it's bad but, it's a bit too flamy. I'd consider a red-like squirrel with a few baby flames on his body, or have his tail be similar to that of Charmander.

I agree, having him covered in flames was cool in concept, but not so much in design, and there is actually history behind him, he is the hearth pokemon, which becomes more evident as he evolves. Anyway, I am working on another version of him, but took a break due to resource race. I should be able to upload the new one next week, I hope.

Love the idea of a flaming squirrel pokemon :D
However, as other's have mentioned, there's perhaps a bit too much fire on him. Also, the fire of Pokemon tend to have more contrast in them between the yellow and red.
I hope you're not offended, but your pokemon idea inspired me and this is what I came up with:

Though there's probably a bit too much fire on this little guy as well ^^"
