Cait's Art

Recommended Posts

I have done pixels for games, but I haven't done art for quite a while.  Not that I was ever good at it, but even if I was, I had self-confidence issues.  o.o So, this is my first true artwork in quite awhile.  I do know I need practice with my lines, as I am using a mouse and there might be somethings that need work.  I am hoping to get so feed back, while please honest, do not be brutally honest.

Milkshake.png

o.o I know I need to work on my lines, and some of my technique.  I want to draw more and get even better than I am, with more confidence.  That confidence starts in sharing my work and not just doing it, hiding it away.  ^_^ I hope this is a good start for me and a new beginning.

the cherry could use some work and the leaf isnt too bad for a novice and even for me shading leaves is pretty hard to do. the shading on the....im just gonna call it a strawberry shake looks really good. the style used for it is pretty clean but i think it might look a little better and you blended the shading at the top a little bit. mainly the white but it looks good and the water droplets on the side looks pretty good. over all i think this is a really good artwork since your starting to come back from drawing and hope you end up making more.

on and one last note on the cherry on the ground. the stem looks really good

I did some editing on the milkshake, but yeah, that cherry was giving me a hard time yesterday.  Lucky, I think I fixed it and I even gave it a background.  I fixed the rim of the glass and put a picture on the glass.

Very charming/ cute picture. ^-^/ : D i wish i drew like that more..

i like how u did the glass and leaf a lot. They're very detailed-- especially given that u use a mouse, it's really impressive.

As for honest feedback... well, i am by no means 100% accurate on this, but i can try to give u my opinion. Here, i tried editing ur picture as well... Sorry if i accidentally changed some things too much. x_x

nqsQqFH.jpg

It's rough, but i think... for the foam on top, maybe think of it like a cloud. Like fluffy/ puffy, with the lighter parts of the fluff facing the light. For the leaf, the stem-part + half facing towards the light should only be lightly highlighted. The centre-stem doesn't need to be as noticeable. For the glass, the bottom could be made a little thicker (assuming it is a cup). The glass edges get thinner as u go up. The side facing away from the light can be shaded slightly with grey/ monotones, since the light souce + background is white.

Finally... i think the angle of the glass' rim could be slightly adjusted to line up with the bottom. (Ignore the shadow line lol. -v-')

Hopefully i didn't come across as harsh or anything. But yea... Idk, I hope u get what i'm saying and that it's helpful.

Thanks! I admit that I had trouble with the rim, and later erased, remaking it. On the new note, I finally discovered that GIMP 2.8 had a single window mode, which made me shout to the heaves: "YES!!!!!!!" I was messing around and created this peach. While I won't change anything, I will take crits and use that knowledge to improve my next piece. It was originally for RPG MAKER, but I decided to leave it as is.

Note: I was drinking peach punch when I painted this.

At least, you didn't draw it and swore you could smell peaches, only to remember you had a glass of peach punch in a glass next to you. Brain farts don't you love them? I think you're right about no more food pictures.... I get hungry way too easily. Hmm, next picture will be something other than food.

Do you really draw those using your mouse? Because that is impressive to draw with a mouse. It requires a different hand control than when drawing with a stylus on a tablet. I am left handed, but use my mouse right handed. I can only point and click with my mouse, which thankfully, is all I need for spriting. I do use my tablet to draw though.  :)

In the first picture I got a great sense of where the light was coming from by the highlights and the shadow cast by the glass. I think that was done very well. But, as stated before, the lines weren't as crisp.

In your second picture your lines got a lot more crisp, but the shadow behind the glass this time puts the milkshake right up against the wall casting a strong shadow. I think it flattens your picture out a bit instead of adding depth. which can be seen more clearly in your first picture. I hope that makes sense. Use the lines from the second drawing, but the lighting effects from the first.   :)

Yeah, I think I understand completely what you're saying.  As for your question, yes, I do use a mouse, because I can't afford a tablet or even know how to use one.  I've been practicing with my mouse for a while, plus, I'm really good with curvy movements. Honestly, the mouse moves like that, so it's like an extension of my hand, but straight lines... I have a bit of trouble with those. I said I wouldn't do another food picture, so I did something this morning. Sigh, dark thoughts, but cute kitten pictures.  I'm complicated and rather complex.  Anyway, one part of it is based on Super Mario (you'll see what I mean)

UPDATED: There was something about the picture that I didn't like so I edited the outside, plus changed the eyes a bit and added a bow with a better end of the bottom. I, also, made the balloon transparent and added a bit of a glow.  I think I might have to make the pink edge a little transparent and leave the white edge.

It's been two days, but I have a custom wallpaper that I'd like to share.  It is a huge piece, and I am sorry for the watermark.  However, this is my first piece of art that I feel possessive over.  (o.o) I am absolutely floored at my progress from the milkshake to finally, this piece.  I took art in high school and was never that good, only now, I feel why.  I should have been into digital art, only my family never had a computer, as they were too expensive.  We weren't eating unhealthy as it is.  (^_^) I wanted to add glowing eyes, only I never could figure out how to do them and I think the piece if perfect without them.  It's a symbolic piece, if you look hard enough, you will see exactly what I mean.  I finally solved my SD card and I'm using a cable instead.  So, while this isn't the ultra cool resource you were hoping for, why not have an awesome wallpaper instead? I have another version with RPG MAKER VX ACE at the bottom.  If you love everything I love from space, adventure, fantasy, you should find this interesting.

Okay, this is suppose to be a cartoon creation as I love cartoons of all sorts, only can't draw in the Japanese style.  My monkey bread, which started out going to be a rabbit "carrot cake" cupcake with the whole works, but decided to make it a monkey instead.  I think I was low on cute, because I partially give *blame* credit to Tsarmina for this one.  I mean, she did post a picture of a chocolate cupcake in her topic and I suddenly got inspired.  ^__^

Oh, you saw that? (!) :o I don't know if I should be mollified or ashamed, as I'm not sure if you're happy or not with me. ^^"

I like the cupcake *Q* It's too cute to eat! And the way you did the swirls on top look really 3D ^-^ It's well done AND adorableee~

Joking merely joking.  Plus, I love chocolate cupcakes and I surf the topics from time to time. I like looking at your artwork.  Noticed cute little chocolate cupcake picture, got inspired and poof, one monkey cupcake was born. Thanks, I have been trying to expand my art technique, plus, learning the system.  >_> Some how, saying gimped still sounds so wrong. I am thinking of making the little guy my mascot and half heartedly joked about putting him on a T-shirt for sale.  Who would buy it, though? Hmm, maybe I should.. Who knows maybe someone would buy it.

But I figure anything that gives me a good idea, is a good thing and a good person to be around.  Who knows, they could give me more ideas.. Must steal ideas subconsciously... Besides, part dork, part goth and strange sense of humor = me, not kidding on that one.  I live in a very conservative area, which means I do a lot of explaining about my jokes.  That has a habit of killing jokes, if you know what I mean.

It doesn't help I don't have much of a sense of humor to begin with or rather, unique.

Aww, but the monkey cupcake is technically a complete making of your own. (Anyway, the cupcake wasn't even mine....) You should buy him on a T-shirt. Then you can have bragging rights about your adorable monkey cupcake. ^-^

Don't you worry, I'm completely out of the range of humor. :P I feel I get a little ditzy sometimes, I daresay.

Yeah, true, but if you hadn't posted it. The idea would never have been born. Maybe I will stick the little guy on Tshirts with witty lines. Who knows maybe they'll take off and make me a millionaire?

A lot of unexpected things become famous. (I'm looking at you, Flappy Bird game). What's to say your monkey cupcake won't? :3

Ooh mama. Should've seen this a lot earlier.

Lovely cutesy style, and totally into the vibrant colors you're using.

Lineart could use some polishing, but it's a good start.

My main gripe is that your textures tend to be a little overdone, and a little inaccurate to the material you're using. Take for example, your peach. The texture slides towards a cross between wood and metallic. I love the contrast, but if the material used for the item isn't that shiny, there's no need for excessive contrast that alters the material property of the item.

The heart balloon looks a lot more polished, but if anything the exterior lining makes it look like there's white mold on it rather than fluff on the skirting of the balloon. Consider using a rounder brush rather than sharp lines and consider using lights and shadows on the skirting to make it look more of a solid object, like fabric. (it's tedious, I know, but it'll be very worth it).

Terribly sorry I can't give a visual tutorial at the moment, I'm extremely packed. But if I have the chance, I can help you out a little.

Thanks! I admit that I need to update pieces more than I do. I am not only trying to learn the system better, but learn new techniques. I have looked at tutorials, but they just don't seem to help. I seem to learn by doing. As for my brushes, the ones that came with gimp, er, suck or I don't know how to use them to their max potential. I am leaning towards bad brushes or not enough. My lines have massively improved as has my mouse work. If anyone has free brush suggestions, please tell me..

Note: any tutorials on noses, mouths and eyes, because I was trying to draws face and got stuck on those parts. Don't get me started about how bad I colored the hair. Should I put it up, facing possible laughter from the audience?

If you put it up (or if you want to PM if you think it's bad) I can give you critique :)

Well, the thing that stands out to me is the following.  My line for the chin could be better, my ears need a bit of work, my eyes are okay (can be a lot better), my nose is eh what the heck and my mouth, I couldn't ever get right in my opinion.  Plus, my coloring is really bad as is my shading.  But this is my first face so, I am not really surprised.  I have always tried to draw faces only I kept doing it wrong.

Hint: I always started with the eyes instead of the way you should, with the head as I did now.  Go ahead and post it here.  I am not really going to be surprised as I do see many of my errors.  But please be gentle as it is the first face I have ever completed or at least, that looks like a face. Also, note that the color of the outline is black and that was mainly done on purpose as I was practicing my er, lines.  If this was a serious face set, I would have so have used other colors. Now that I notice it, my placement could be better, too, but oh well, learning is fun!

Don't beat yourself up. This is really good for a first face. You avoided many of mistakes that beginners usually make. The biggest one of them all is not putting the eyes in the middle of the head...and you have not made that mistake. I'm sure plenty of people will offer their criticism here, but just know that there are so many styles when it comes to drawing so they might be giving you tips on what they would do (with their own stylistic preferences). You drew this with a mouse right? And what program?

Maybe I can do some drawing tutorials in the future besides pixel art. Of course I really haven't shared any of my artwork yet so how do you know I am qualified? :)

Keep it up. :D

Gimp!  Yeah, but I just wanted to state what I knew was a problem up front.  I mean, if people knew what my problems were, we could avoid beating around the bush or hurt feelings.  Or trying to hurt or avoid hurting.  I am a "as a matter of fact" person, you don't want to see me when I am truly beating myself up.  I am completely irrational, trust me.  Thanks, I will keep it up. My line work has gotten better and now, I am pushing into things that I really suck at.  Well, I suck a lot less, but still need more lessons to go!

It's not always the brush. It's how you use them.

Every single work of mine has been lined and colored mostly using the Photoshop basic round feathered brush.

I'd say that if you're serious about picking up digital illustration, buy a pen tablet for your computer; it'll unlock your full potential, so to speak.

Also, if you like to, go ahead. Sure there'll be laughter. But there'll also be constructive comments. And I'd be glad to do up a tutorial when I have the time. But first, to finish my current tut on how to do action poses...

I looked into some options, which would have to wait, but I know I will have to learn an entirely new method. o.o I can't wait, but it is more money related as I don't have much. I hope to learn more about shapes, and shading before that happens. I don't know anything about tablets, but thinking if I ever got a better iPad to use procreate and brushes app, with a stylus pen. Note: my brother gives me his old tech when he upgrades, hence I have a iPad gen 1 and can't use that app. (-_-)
