Forest Trail, Forest Lake, etc...

Recommended Posts

I am currently working on a big game and would like to know what people would think of my mapping abilities. So first off, I have a screen shot of a forest trail (i decided to not use trees with the trail):

Leading to a lake (the bush with flowers is important and not random):

By going back out through the forest trail you reach a house (I feel like I need something on the blank grass areas but I don't know what):

And here is what it looks like inside the house along with one of the rooms:

And later in the game, there is a cave dungeon:

Any feedback?

It looks like you have a good idea of what you want your maps to be like, that's good

For the forest, I'd suggest making it less straight and symmetrical

A natural forest would be more random, and there might be trees and stuff scattered about

If there's a well-traveled path, it would probably not have anything growing on it, so for the first map I'd say to get rid of the tall grass on the path

Not entirely, maybe just use your best judgment there and use shift-click mapping to make it look nice

As for the house, it's size is really nice, and there's not a lot of empty space, which is good and makes it look nice

For the second interior map, you could probably make it a bit bigger and split it into rooms so the bed isn't right next to the dining room table

And the cave looks nice, but again, too straight

It's sort of hard to make stuff look all random and natural, but random and natural is better than straight and blocky in my opinion

Other than the straight lines, I think the cave looks good

Forest1: Need more variety on the background trees. Add some bushes or smaller trees in the foreground.

Forest2: The artist in me wants to redo those tree shadows with parallax mapping.

Forest3: Decent. Same urge on those rectangular shadows.

House1: Nice skull.

House2: I dunno much people that would like to sleep that close to the kitchen. I would put the bed on a corner with separators instead.

Dmarriin- Thanks! I will rework my straight pathways. But I figured that the cave was more like a maze. Should I still change it?

IMEmperor- I would liek to have messages between you and me going back and forth about redoing my tree shadows. If more convenient, you could just post here because I have no idea what you're talking about with redoing shadows with parallax mapping. O.o

Btw you two, the forest trail isn't a well traveled path.

man you have good well of mapping may i say  :)

I really like it , also I agree with @dmariin and @IMEmperor advice.

but, you are right i think the cave map are too confusing and not more neutral.
