eto111 2 Posted November 30, 2013 (edited) Hi guys I have 3 maps here that I was wondering if I could get advice on, im a new mapper and would like to know if the maps I made are any good and if not then why. I think its the best way for me to become a better mapper. This first map is like a village center, its not the whole village, just the shopping, when doing villages and towns I decided to split them into different areas than doing one whole town or village on one map. This map is not finished as you can see there are no events and the shops have no doors ( I haven't created all the maps the doors would transfer to) The next 2 images are a 2 story weapon shop, The main character, his dad owns this shop the first floor is the shop the second floor is where the character and his dad live. First floor Second floor Any helpfull info would be greatfull! Thanks guys Edited December 1, 2013 by eto111

Sacha Zephyr 2 Posted November 30, 2013 (edited) You might want to make a full roof for the buildings in the town center. Tile set C has some full ones toward the bottom. For the first floor, I think everything is great except for the southern walls. You should try to just put the top tile along the edges on the southern wall without the bottom tiles there, because it's supposed to be the part of the wall that is on the outside of the house and it doesn't have the same materials for the wall as the inside. The second floor, the only thing I think you would need to do is maybe make a little separation wall for the bedroom that is out in the open. (Unless this is like my family and the living room is one of the bedrooms lol) Oh and the southern wall thing applies here, too. On the inside of the buildings I would get rid of the shadows because it is inside. The lights normally come from the ceiling causing light to be distributed equally across all corners of the room. I would think shadows would be in use if it was supposed to be a naturally dim area like in certain types of dungeons. This was just my personal opinion. I don't know what you are or aren't intentionally doing with these maps. Hope I helped though! :'D Edited November 30, 2013 by Sacha Zephyr
Tsarmina 2,612 Posted November 30, 2013 Everything is rather sparse--outdoors and indoors. Also, all the roofs in the village square are the same--perhaps this is for uniformity, but it just looks a little...bland. There's quite a bit of open space with nothing, except for the occasional plant and patch of thick grass. I'd suggest adding in lots more trees, especially around the edges, and overlapping and adding more buildings to make the place appear more lively. Also you might want to invest in a Mack tileset (they're freeeee!) First floor. There's not much here either. Add in some stuff from the B and C tiles--or if you have other tilesets, even better. Don't be afraid to change up the walls, either. Also, if this is a weapon shop, then add in some weapons! There are a couple crates of spears, sets of swords, etc. even in the default C tiles. Those can really do wonders. And just for effect, add a little bit of carpeting~ In both the first and second floors, the walls are almost completely bare. Add a couple hangings--I admit that when I still used default tiles, I was a sucker for those red or white silk floor-to-ceiling hangings. Also, those rooms with the beds have hardly anything--add in a bedside table, some pictures, wardrobes, etc. Also, your kitchen counter is stuck to the wall. (Move it down one tile...) Plus you have this odd huge black space at the right side of the screen--consider chopping that off. Add windows ^-^ Mostly it's just a decor issue--fundamentally you have no problems. Just spruce everything up, and don't be afraid to go a little wild! ^-^ Good luck~
