Sillouete's Relatively New Parallel Maps :D

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am Sillouete and this is my first time posting here. I am posting because I would like some feedback on some parallax maps that I made. It is my first time making these and I had no previous experience with Gimp or RPG Maker. For the moment, these are just practice maps that will probably never be used in a game. Any suggestions on how I can improve are welcome.

Anyway, on with the screenshots!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the first map I made. It is set in a forest, with a small house. I painted the terrain and cliffs myself just because I thought it would look more natural. In the end, it came out a bit more cluttered than I expected.

This second map features a mini town by a small lake. Again, I painted the terrain myself. I am not exactly very happy with the water, but I decided to leave it like that till I learn how to use water properly.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In this third map, I decided to actually use water from a Hanzo Kimuro tileset that I found. Also, I used the same tileset to make the base terrain. I finished it off by doing the details on Gimp. I was aiming for a more cleaner and less cluttered setting, as compared to the last two maps.

These maps looks amazing even for a practice map but there are some things that looks odd.  The houses seems a bit off.  I dunno if it's the contrast but they do standout when compared to the cliffs that you used on the 3rd map which blends with the scene quite nicely.  Also, the stairs on map 1 seems too forced to look like one.  The bottom part of the stairs on map 3 are cut off.  Is there no bottom stair tile for that part?

Thanks for replying and pointing out these things. I did had issues with the houses, msotly because I couldn't find some that would go with my painting style. Also thanks for pointing out the stairs on map 3, I completely missed that. I looked and there was an end tile, but it was about half as long as the one I used, so I decided to try and fix it using Gimp. Below are the update pictures. It's only minor changes, so you might not notice right away.

Map 1

Instead of stairs, I just tried to make them slopes. This still looks strange, but since it's a practice map, I figure I'll just leave it as it is.

Map 2

To try and fix the houses looking out of place or just pasted on top of everything, I added more grass and weeds to the borders. This won't completely fix the problem, but it looks better than the previous image. I think the lack of shadows also makes the houses look out of place.

Map3

I added grass around the border of the stairs since there was't a proper end one. I think it looks a bit better than before.

Anyway, tonight I'll be adding another practice map and I will keep in mind all these little details! Thanks!

Amazing work. all the points i had were already stated by Orathan. that blue house though... it is REALLY blue. i would alter either the roof OR the wall color but that may just be personal preference. maybe add some vegetation on the walls here and there on that town map. some moss or something can go a long way.

Truly amazing product so far though. keep it up!

Looking forward to seeing the new map. way to make a splash in the mapping community!

I really like these maps. In the first screenshot, though, the house is bright and for me, it feels cluttered.

On the second one, the water is too bright.. maybe try making it darker towards the center?

Finally, the last map seems really good, but maybe add some more to the water like fish, plants, ect.

Good work!

The first house I quite like, it gives off a sort of "outcast magician" or "villager with tales to tell" vibe.
Great work on your mapping though, for a first try that's so much more work than I've done! ^ ^

I'm pretty impressed with these maps. Anyone who doesn't know anything about this program or parallax mapping would say the same thing. I agree with everything everyone said except for one thing, the stairs on the first map. I think they might look a little off because of some minor details:

1. The left side of the top stair is slightly cut off

2. The brown rocks between stairs are too bright

I think you should put the stairs back in and darken the area a bit. It was fine the way it was imo and just needed some touch up. I am very new to all this so my opinion should be taken with a grain of salt.

Edit: I looked at those stairs again and noticed the tiny rocks between steps seem too blocky in addition to my other observations. Everything else looks damn good.
