Music Feedback Thread

Recommended Posts

I'm not sure if I'm supposed to provide any feedback, since there hasn't been anything new on this in a while, but I have something to share myself.

This is a song that I've made fairly recently to be used as one of the battle (or potentially boss) themes in my main game project. It's very sample-heavy, and if you think it sounds kind of weird for RPG music then I've kind of done my job (I take a lot of inspiration from games like Earthbound). Though at times, when I'm listening to my own music, especially on tracks like this one, I kind of wonder whether I go too far on the weird. But that's why I'd like some feedback!

So here it is. Let me know what you think!

I very much like the weird robotic sound you seem to be aiming for, and I think you capture it very well. Regarding if it's too weird... I'm going to have to say no there as well. Is weird what you're going for? Then yes you've succeeded brilliantly since it remains catchy even though there's some unexpected weirdness going on! Overall I really like your track as it's both something new and creative and since it's catchy! :)

This is my Boss song TranscenDANCE. It's supposed to sound catchy get you pumped. I picture the boss to be some kind of robotic clown/joker, but that is not decided yet.

Please let me know what you think :).

Very good track, it definitely makes me want to stomp on a boss! The only thing I can suggest is maybe work on the stereo panning a bit, because the first part of the track sounds like it's all coming from the middle...but maybe it's just me.

This is an ambient theme I made for a sci-fi game. It's not supposed to have much going on, but I still feel like I could add more. Any ideas?

Thanks for your feedback! I agree that my track is pretty centered at least in the beginning before the chiptune synth really kicks in.

I like your track. It's very minimalistic and spacey. I think I'd personally add a breathy synth pad (or a strings ensemble) at 0:07 or maybe a little later when the lead comes in to fill up some of the empty space and make the sound of the track be more "breathy" as I think that'd go well along with your track.

You could also experiment on adding some more high end sounds/melodies over the track to make it occupy even more of the sound spectrum.

If you would like to make the sound of your song to be more tense you could add some bass strings or low rumbly bass synths to give the low end some tension as well

Overall I agree with you that there could be more in this track and honestly the possibilities are quite endless, but this is what I would personally do.

This is a track that I wanted to make sound very homely and cozy but also adventurelike. First it ended up a bit short and a bit too cozy so I basically changed the entire theme of the song and now you could say that the song is divided into two parts. The homely sound and the big anticipating sound in the second half. I want to know what you guys think about this track.

@Linnet5:

I like how it is exactly like you described it. There's a warm acoustic sound in the beginning for the cozy "home sweet home" feeling, and then there's the synthtic chords to create the contrast.

There's some minor, rather technical things I didn't like about the track though. The synthetic chords have every once in a while a little ducking effect going on, for example at around 1:22. My guess is, there is too much compression on the chords.

Also, the flute has a weird quality to it. Some harsh high mid frequencies that wobble along with the vibrato. It should be easy to fix with some eq'ing.

@Master Taffer:

It does sound empty. I know i was on purpose, but it just sounds like it lacks something. There is pretty much just two instruments. What about some light percussion, maybe some noise in the background for some spacey atmosphere, a pad somewhere? I don't know, the track simply sounds unfinished. Especially for a title theme. With these sort of themes, I would want to get the player hooked to jump right into the game.

Battle - Death Penalty

This is another battle theme. Arrangement is pretty much down. The mix is not done yet. Also, it doesn't loop. I'll fix these things later on.

As I did before, I wanted to include a very memorable melody, so i can resue it for other tracks. With this, you can create a theme song for certain characters in the game. When a specific melody comes up, the player should immediatley know who's coming or what's going on. At least, that's the idea.

What can I say, I love it! It sounds like battle of medieval knight fighting you while marching forward. The drums sound like the knight is moving forward, trying to kill you. I love every aspect of it. No complains or critics here!

Now this is a commission video I did yesterday and wanted to improve my piano skills. It is also a boss fight music (possibly final boss even!), so yeah. Hopefully you will enjoy it!

I think this is a pretty great tune. Good boss fight tracks always seem to have evolving melodies, and this one switches this way and that often enough that it kept me engaged. I especially enjoy the few opening moments, which feel very somber before it drastically shifts into the heat of the battle. Is this song meant to be just a piano arrangement, or will other instruments be introduced later?

I haven't actually done too much work with music for a while, but for whatever reason today it sounded like a good idea so I went for it. This track is supposed to be a more general battle theme, for an area with more energetic enemies. I sent it to my mother in an e-mail, and she told me it was more like a song for "walking" than a battle theme, so I might ask for your judgement on that...

I think I have made a lot of improvement with my music theory since the last time I've uploaded anything (was that seriously 3 months?), thanks to a friend of mine who actually knows what he's doing when it comes to music. I even think I managed to stay on key this time. I hope. Here it is.

That's a real nice tune Maxim, and good playing to boot!

Tuckie, I quite like the drums in Tussle, especially the moments they ramp up when the sound effects pop (that bass riff and clap at 0:18 is golden). The synth that comes in later is a bit harsh, helps relay the "heat of combat" since it's a battle theme, but you might want to consider lowering the volume on it.  I really dig the ending sequence; if you plan on extending the track that'd be a great place to bring back the drums (and other instruments) with a bit more complexity and "oomf".  Then maybe remove them one by one over a couple few measures, until you're left with just the clap and the lead, and end with a clap or two.  Might be a bit cliche, but I think it could work with your progression.

Here's a short battle tune I'd love a bit of feedback on:

And a couple chiptunes:

Cheers!

First of all, thanks! ^^

Now for critics!

To Battle: The music is lacking in bass department and some uniquement IMO. It sounds like typical royal guard going to battle sure, but that's it. I don't hear any uniquement, you might want to fix that if possible. :)

Bit By Bit: This one I really like, it sounds like your typical dinner hub place, but for insects, with sounds very unique and enjoyable, heck, I want to play a game with this music as a hub, good job!

Byte By Byte: This does sound simular to Bit By Bit to be honest. But something about it does seem, different. I can't put my finger on it, but it feels unique as well, which isn't a bad thing, but I recommen trying different ways to make it sound more different, but not fully. Also this sounds like Robot is a sciencetist! :D

------------------------------------

Now, here something I was working on in Musescore and (trying to) play this on my piano! Original composition of course, but here you go!

Theme: Sumurai, (Final) Boss Music, Japanese Dance.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll definitely experiment more on that battle track.

Glad you heard the moods I was going for in the chiptunes.  The corresponding game is in being created in AGS--might be a little while before you can play it, but I saw no harm in posting the soundtrack.  You're spot on about the robot being a scientist, he's also a black market merchant, and one of the items he can sell you is a bunsen burner.

Your piece is excellent, definitely conveys the mood of the frantic yet graceful, deadly dance of swords locked in combat.  The pauses really add to the pacing, momentary rests from the strikes and parries, contests of endurance, they're often mutual; we see this in the animal kingdom too, as opponents back off for a few seconds, eyeing each other with muscles tense, ready to spring and lock horns, claws, jaws, what have you.
