Resource Feedback Thread

She's not a very feminine girl. I also wanted to make her look more confident, and her shoulders were too hunched up in her old sprite. Thanks for the feedback, Lazzamore!

Your icons look very nice so far. Is this your first time making them?

I really only have one issue with them, which is sprite size. By default, icons are 24x24 pixels, but the big greatsword on the third row, for example, is 32x32. I don't know what your circumstances are, though; you could be using a script that allows you to use bigger icons, and I wouldn't know.

What program did you make these in?

@Blue Monkey: I would recommend studying some RTP style vehicles to get an idea on perspective. Take for example the cars in this restaff.

@SpookyMothman: Yep, this is my first time. I like to use Gimp for sprite work. Thank you for you compliments!

For some reason, the word "shocktopus" popped up in my head today, so, um... I sprited that.

pIUbdVB.png

Or the outline of one, at least. I'd just like some feedback before I commit to shading it. Especially color and design choice. What would an electric octopus even look like?

Yellow Octopus with electric blue tipped tentacles.  Maybe a few blue rings going up each tentacle towards the head.

Threw it on a black background because I liked the way it popped.

Changed the colors slightly.  Your's felt a bit too greenish.  I wish I could explain that better.  Outlined it see what kind of effect it would have, gave it a cool toon vibe if you ask me.  Edited the eye to make it more interesting (changed the pupil to be true to nature).  It was already good though.  I like your design a lot.  Like hot damn that's a cool lookin' octopus.

Yikes. This took a lot longer than I thought it would.

1Q3zvoS.png

How's it looking so far?

Imo, i think it would cool if the body was dark blue and the ends, yellow : )

Maybe even striped a bit, so the yellow ends would taper off into 1-2 bands of yellow down the arms, towards the body.

Just an idea, anyway. ^__^ But i think right now, it kind of reminds me (maybe?) too much of Pikachu. : 3

I agree with you on the colors, Bugs, but I don't have many yellow monsters right now, and I really, really like Charles' recolor. I also think Charles did a great job making it look really cool.

B)   I only helped improve an already awesome design.  Maybe you could recolor it using Bugs color and use that version as a variation?  Here's an example...  a direct color swap and one with a darker blue...

Elloh, folks! Can I get some feedback on some arts please?

I have a couple of things; one is these:

Dragon_1_face_small_zpsbad397d2.png

Dragon_1_face_zps9d0fdb12.png << (Larger version showing more detail)

And the other is this:

Dragon_1_battler_zpsbded88af.png

So basically, I'm looking for feedback on a few points: With the faces, the expressions mostly. And the battler, we're talking about consistency; my art style is what it is and though there are a ton of anatomical doo-doos I cba going back to change the WHOLE THING now. ^^

Thanks in advance for your input!

Your style looks plenty consistent to me. I think I remember you posting a status update saying that making expressions is hard, and if you were talking about what you've done here, I'd say you did very well. There are just a few things I'd like to mention about the faces. First is the third from the left. There's a horn-colored something just floating around, and the top of his horn is cut off. Second is the one on the far right. The dragon is supposed to look angry, but eyebrows alone won't portray that anger well enough. Adding folds to its face can help emphasize emotion. I added just three lines to that face, and hopefully that helps you see what I mean. Maybe flaring its nostrils would help, too. Also, in the first and third faces, the sclera is darkish and grey, while in the fourth face, it's bright white. Consider whitening the first and third's eye whites to match the fourth's.

As for your battler, I don't see any problems. There are some differences between it and the faces, such as horn shape and size, and there seems to be much less shading on the battler than on the faces. But that's really nothing to worry about. It's clear enough that the faces and the battler are of the same dragon that small inconsistencies like this aren't a problem.

I decided to try something a little different: full body pixel stuff.

LEdWm3E.png

This took a long time to do. ;w;

These most likely won't be used in-game. I just made them because I wanted to. Obviously, anatomy's still a big problem for me (also, hands and finer details), but I want to expand my range a bit, and start spriting human battlers. Any tips for how to improve these sprites would be great, and if you have tips for future endeavors, then that'd be even better.

It's funny how we can see a wooden peg leg and be mildly amused, while if we see a realistic artificial limb, we think "Oh, thats sad...".

Those are good, SpookyMothman, the only thing is that the short girls hair droops a little more then i would think it would, and the boys hand looks odd not being visible.

I've started a new project, and got to work making the player sprites. What do you guys think of this guy:

Thank you for saying so, Lazzamore. I think that reaction to wooden legs is because we were raised with the cartoon pirate stereotype.

In case you can't tell, I can't do hands. They give me so much trouble for some reason.

Anyway, your sprites are looking good. The biggest thing I'd suggest is darkening the darkest skin shade, so there's a more visible outline on his arms. Oh! Also, the longer pant leg is on the same side on both the south- and north-facing sprites, and it also changes as he walks. Consider picking a side for it to be on, and make that side longer, in the interest of consistency.

I've decided to give it a shot at trying to do my own faces for Cat and Dog.  I started yesterday and this is what I have.  The old version is the left and the newer edit is on the right.  I think it's definitely looking cute and I am really proud of it.  Even if it's taking a bit of time to do.  o_o I think that Dog is going to be my hardest face to do, but won't be for awhile.

Looking good, Cait! The first thing I noticed is that the mouth could use some color. Maybe two small teeth at the top. Also, I feel like there shouldn't be shadows at the base of the inside of her ears. Maybe a little bit, but probably not as much as you have right now.

Other than that, I don't see anything wrong with it. It's cute! Looking good, indeed!

I think you could make her eyes a little bit more almond or upturned at the edges--you can keep them round, but having an upper tip really lends itself to a more catlike/feline look, while you can keep it cute with round soft pupils and a round eye overall. =^-^=

I like the perspective. It's like a non-pixel-art version, front-facing Yanfly's Engine Melody flipped on the x-axis. ^-^

Pretty much described pokemon's engine right there. On the topic of the same post, I've dabbled in the same kind of shading in the past. It only really works when you do it well. Keep practicing!

Just learning pixel art but I did a male base sprite in my spare time.

idak1db.png

How this looks? Probably my first sprite after a break of a year, I didn't lost much skills... kinda happy how it turned out expect for the arms but my issue is with the size: it's 32x32 (the default of VX/Ace's sprites) but as the sprite is filling all of the space, what if any character have long hair?

Thanks, feedback most welcome! :D

EDIT Fixed few things and made a simple knight to test out the base :)

REVIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIVE!!

It's been a few months (yikes), so I'm not sure if this still helps, but the sprite looks good. Curious to see how it looks in motion, or how it looks now, if you've updated it since then.

New style. Work in progress. Yada yada yada.

The one on the left is the new one. Right's the old one.

Characters actually have ears now! Trying to move into a more cartoony style.

The ears. They see all.

Anyway. It looks nice, man. The  hair kind of looks like a brunette super saiyan, but still pretty good.

Spooky, I think the hair is a little too big in the back. It's too wide and doesn't really look like it's on a head. But I like the redesign, it gives a bit more personality than the original.

Looking for some feedback on some sprite templates.

They're lookin' real nice, Charles! The only thing I can really nitpick is the leg and foot movement. When the characters are walking left or right, it kinda looks like they're shuffling, rather than walking. Moving just a few pixels on their feet up a pixel should help.

Only probably cleaner than this edit I did.

The laptop I would use to sprite has, once again, died. I'm not sure how it came back the last time, though, so I'm pretty sure it's gone for good. But I have Photoshop now, so I figured I'd try to make sprites there. I'm still getting used to Photoshop again; it's been a few years since the last time I'd used it, but hey. Practice makes perfect. That being said, this is a work in progress.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for what I can improve, or maybe do differently.

That is... adorably hideous.  (Hideously adorable?)  How could I battle that?  It looks like a little girl on her first day of kindergarten!
