Arakin 0 Posted March 3, 2014 So these are the maps that I have been working on for like...three days? They aren't finished yet. I hope that they are not to ugly for someone, but if they are don't hesitate to tell me about it. I want to know how I can improve these maps. And I apologize in advance that I have only attached the files, I don't know how to show them better like others do. A bit of history on the idea that I have for the game: The world is as big as its mystery. The adventure will begin at the long continent nicknamed "World". As our heroes explores the continent, they will encounter a long wall that is maintained by the Kingdom yet it was built long before the kingdom's founding. To northern part of the continent, the heroes will discover dry land with a people as harsh as the land they live in. The land's condition was due to an accident that happened long ago, maybe the nearby dry ruins of a city can tell the tale? To the west, there is an island, far more cruel and dangerous as the dry land. The sea holds many mysteries as well. Small islands that harbor lonely castaways or dangerous pirates. With the many dangers, comes as many secrets and treasure for the brave heroes to find. As the heroes explore, they will discover an icy cold continent that reach far and wide. The bitter cold and the dangerous and new creatures who lives there speaks of the nature's rule that only the strongest survives. As the heroes brave far to the west in the cold continent, they find their exploration blocked by a long wall, who guards a nation who desire a foe to test their steel. Skysagi 219 Posted March 3, 2014 They look good but, with exception of the "Field" ones, they look really simple :\
LordSquirrel 150 Posted March 4, 2014 I dunno' they all seem a little to empty to me. Try adding some more details like barrels, or something to the non field maps, and try filling out the field maps.
Tsarmina 2,612 Posted March 4, 2014 The maps are a little barren. I see you're using RTP? I'd suggest trying out the Exterior-B set and putting little patches of plants around. (Even better, you can try your hand at clumping, which is when artists online parallax bits and pieces together to make the grid-map system less obvious.) Skysagi 219 Posted March 4, 2014 (edited) Thank you, LordSquirrel, I used the wrong word in the previous post. Like he said, the "Exterior" Maps look empty. Edited March 4, 2014 by ZoroarX
LordSquirrel 150 Posted March 4, 2014 I like to think that I specialize in exterior maps, ZoroarX. Anyway. I would recommend replacing those stair on the wall with ladder tiles, and maybe making the wall less of a straight line. Also try not to make the trees just one big blob on the side of the map. Arakin 0 Posted March 4, 2014 I have decided to focus on mapping for now, that's why the Exterior feels empty (No NPCs except the one at the Island) Thanks for the advice, LordSqurirel. Do you have any suggestions on how to form those trees and what to fill on the field map? Can you tell me more about clumping, Tsarmina? Maybe show me some examples so I might understand it better? LordSquirrel 150 Posted March 4, 2014 With the exception of the last snowy one the fields feel too spread out, try adding some mountains, hill, ponds, or more trees to the first field map, and for the second one, try adding a few more islands, or making the ones already there a little bigger, if that interferes with your story in some way, just use the extra islands as places for side quest's. And for the forests, (not trying to self promote) just look at my screenshot post on this thread, I have a screenshot there of a forest village, obviously not the same as a wall camp, but look at how the tree line is shaped, it is mostly straight but it also has parts that cut in to it or bulge out from it, try doing something like that.
Arakin 0 Posted March 4, 2014 I don't whatever this is an improvement or not. I made changes to the first field map so it is bigger and I have added more mountains, trees and hills. Give me your opinion.
LordSquirrel 150 Posted March 4, 2014 Much better! Only problem I have is that the island on the right looks like its about to sink with all that water on it.
