YummyTiger 6 Posted March 31, 2014 Hello, I am attempting to put together a map for one of the main thoroughfares between two cities and a small village. The road crossing is near the small village (which nearly in ruins at this point). The road used to be a major crossing for traffic between the major cities in the area, but since the village's bridge collapsed, it is largely unused. Basically, I was wondering if anyone had any ideas, suggestions for "clutter" that would logically be found at a fantasy road crossing? I have attached the current map, and I will definitely add some rocks/flora, but I was looking suggestions to spruce up the roadside area itself. Please let me know if you have any questions, and I appreciate any suggestions. Thanks!

Pokémon Trainer 42 Posted March 31, 2014 I personally think that the old road shouts for more 'green'. Still would look like a road but somewhat cut-off since no one (or only a few) use this road. o_~ 안녕
Tsarmina 2,612 Posted March 31, 2014 Litter a litter of leaves (haha) or small sprouts, wild dark grasses, etc around the signs. That'll definitely make it look more overgrown and unused. Anyway, it's not like someone would regularly weed there anyway.
YummyTiger 6 Posted March 31, 2014 Thanks a bunch for the suggestions! I used most of them. The idea of wheel ruts was interesting, but I was not able to make it look decent considering the road is stones. I may work on it a bit more. Thought I would show you all how it ended up, since you took the time to offer a few suggestions. Thanks!
+ Brackev 66 Posted April 1, 2014 Looks better, but the well in the middle of the road looks out of place. I'd move it close to the road in a spot it can be easily seen but not in the way.
Kilravok 27 Posted May 5, 2014 I actually would move the village to the crossroad, or, since it looks more like a T junction with an additional trail, along the straight of the junction. It is natural for settlements to grow "around" road crossings, starting with an inn, then a hoop smith and horse smith, then a coach carpenter, then a ....It is unnatural for the village to be offside of the junction or crossing. The map shows what I believe to be the entrance to the village, so it would be good to either re-plan and place the village on top of the crossing or add a serious enough reason as to why it is built just a stone throw away from it (either shown on the map or mentioned/hinted in the story...). YummyTiger 6 Posted May 14, 2014 Kilravok, That is actually a really good point. I never really considered that, but there is a reason for the village to be near the T junction as it developed around a heavily traveled bridge instead. Thanks for the comment though, it was very insightful. The game will actually expand the village based on your character's actions, so I may eventually expand it to include the crossroads as the village grows.
