UPDATE:: I now have some colored examples! I did the three main antagonists as some promo art

which for now will only be available to the public until I can get some character bust sheet examples done.

Plus, also included is an example of a character still in the editing process but a good color practice, what do you think?

   Mainly I want to know what your reaction would be to this art style as a player.

Would it make you want to play the game more? Less? Or does it not change your opinion at all?

 

   This thread also doubles as a feedback thread, I won't tell you who these characters are or how they

relate to the story of my game but if you like one or just can't stand one for some reason let me know!

Originally I was aiming for something simpler, but the more I got into it I decided I wanted these

simple doodles to be more detailed (and so you will notice this progression in the drawings).

 

Reasons I went with this style:

• It is easier and faster to draw which means I can spend more time on other aspects of my game too.
• I would be able to do different expressions as busts without killing myself.
• Would be able to incorporate CG images into cut-scenes!
• The design matches the sprite base a little more I think? 
• They are cute... hee hee.... (or maybe that's just me o.o;)
• They are my own design~ It makes me feel original.

 Note: Sorry for the cell-phone quality images! Not only have I lost my tablet pen but

my scanner stopped working this week (thank-you life, love you too). The first image however is

an example of what the line-art would look like with some quick, flat coloring added. Enjoy!

   Note 2: Most references are cut off around the knees, they will be bust pictures so

in the game only from a certain point and up will be visible anyway.

Now I have to work on not seeing Razputin every time I draw one. Orz

 

Why are there not more games like Psychonauts? I would kill to have them made.

It was, for me, one of those games not recognized enough by the public (not including awesome people)

just because it wasn't "mainstream gaming" when it came out. How unfair...

That game was what made me into plot junkie. :3

Personally.... and this is just my opinion-- my very, very honest opinion--.. 

 

... i'd have to say that i think... the art style is... not quite my cup of tea. /o/ Unfortunately, i think it would make me want to play the game less... Sorry! I hesitated saying what i thought earlier because i didn't want to offend you. /o/

 

 

I think i would be more likely to play if their faces were slightly a bit rounder/ more "feminine-looking"?.. : ) It's kind of hard to explain. Though i'm also generally more attracted to anime-styled art. (As you can probably tell lol.)

I saw this back when you only had that blacksmith (I think?). At that time I ashamedly, thought meh. The square head thing, it's unique, buuuut I didn't like it all that much lol (although I did like the eyes, so simple and yet ...I'm not sure).

and then i come back and I'm like (except with bigger eyes and mouth). Especially after seeing that colour, wooow your stuff and this style is awesome! I think, just keep going at it, I would definitely play a game with this style with one thing being that it is different, but it looks really nice. For me, the twins caught my eye haha

Thank-you for your input! I understand the style is a little unorthodox to say the least haha, but mainly I wanted to do something original that was easier to draw/color so I wouldn't lose too much interest in the project or take YEARS to finish all the character designs and whatnot. I have also only been coloring my art digitally for less than a year so I ddin't want to make any leaps that would prove too much for my inexperience!

 

I am still happy you let me know your opinion though, a little hard love here and there isn't a totally bad thing!

:3 Alrighty! I will probably give them more curves then! These have kind of evolved from being my mere doodles to something more refined now and when I draw them on my laptop they get a lot more detail haha. A lot. Plus the color gives them that little bit of extra something, I really like this coloring style on them for some reason but it would never work for normal busts!

I adore these! I think a unique art style is the easiest way to hook me into a game, lol XD Call me superficial, but I don't go around playing every game that exists in order to get a balanced view and stuff. Whatever's in the first post of the game thread is what helps me decide whether I should try it or not, and while default RTP stuff kinda looks nice, it also sucks at giving a representation of the game through a single screenshot. Whereas a piece of custom artwork instantly helps differenciate you from the crowd. And it also helps say something about the game- y'know, as long as the art style suits it. This style screams "you're in for a cute, funny fantasy adventure"!

While you can totally have a cute, funny fantasy adventure without your own art style, it won't look this iconic. Its always good when you can post a screenshot and everyone will instantly know what game it comes from!
