Portraits

Recommended Posts

Hi! I'd like a bit of advice and feedback on some portraits I made :)

I've been trying to mimic the rtp style, but they are completely drawn from scratch except for one of them.

The first i made completely from scratch... Short hair kills me.

The hair on this one isn't original, it's an edit/rip of the Bunny Girl actor from the RTP.

My newest! It got a bit larger than normal :I

(I'll just edit it whatever I make into this first post...)

Actor 3-2 as a child.

update! :) Derp-face has gotten a makeover, a wig and some new clothes!

Thanks beforehand if you decide to critique! :)

They look really good! I like the semi-realistic feel to them and the gir's hair is gorgeous!

The only thing that irks me is how short their neck is or how big their head is compared to their body. I'd probably extend their neck a bit and shrink their head to make it a little more proportionate.

These were made from scratch? They're really good, I'm pretty sure you could fulfill a lot of commissions with this style - a good sum of people request RTP Style stuff. I'd say that the first guy's head is slightly bigger than it should be (~5% Bigger), it's probably because his head is cocked forward. But other than that, these look really nice.

Thanks a lot :D

I couldn't really see the issue with their necks and heads before, but now i do! :) I'll fix them and post again to see if i've done it right! ^^

(actually, now it's glaringly obvious how big the first one's head is... I must have been blind, haha)

@euphoria Hahaha, thanks! :D I'm on easter break right now and have a lot of time, so I'm willing to make a portrait for free just for practice :)

I don't see the neck issue, they look fine to me. Think about having everyone face the same direction and turn the same direction. Consistancy addes polish to your game.

They look great :) RTP style is so hard for me! I think it's great how you can mimic it ^^

Thanks a lot you guys :D Does anyone know of a good source with medieval/fantasy clothes? I don't really know much about that, even though i've been a lurker on forums like these for years x)

I'd probably just google medeival/fantasy for ideas, except you might get the weird costume ones from party city.

A source as in, pre-made resource pieces? Or a source as in, a terrific reference point? :)

Thanks! :)

yeah, i'm mainly looking for terrific reference points ^^ I just have no creativity when it comes to clothes...:(

Here's an edit i made for a request! It's actor 3-2, I tried to make her into a kid.

Don't worry, I don't either. XD

Oooh yeah, I remember seeing that request while I was modding. ^-^ I bet someone will be really happy!~ She looks great!

Reference points, hmmm. Medieval? Since there's so much medieval clothing in history, a Google search will probably be best. (I don't know if you're looking for armour, or peasant clothes, or dresses, or...?)

hehe, thanks :D

I'm basically looking for everything from armor to children's clothing. I don't really know what they usually wore, that's the problem really :I

I've googled a lot, but it's kinda hard to find sources that have that fantasy finish, and is... realistic, I dunno x)

But the RTP does have clothing that is kinda modern, so maybe anything goes? :S

I suppose ^^ Medieval stuff was generally in plainish colors unless you were royal or something. Really you could wear anything, but usually not anything TOO flashy. XD

Heheh, no 70's stuff then ^^

Anyway, I tried to turn this guy around...

Does it look too weird, or do I get away with it, with some editing? x)

Haha, he kind of has a derpy smile. ^^ His ear is really vertical too, but otherwise I think you could get away with it. :)

Yeah, I tried to make him serious at first, but then that smile just stuck there x) He'll just be the dumb macho-man I guess ^^

Oh shit, his ear is really high though o.o Another thing to edit...

Oh yeah, feel free to add a hint of a lower (or even upper) lip too, that might help cure his smile ^^

Yeah, I'm working on him now ^_^

Meanwhile, thought i'd post some title screens and gameovers I worked on for a game I probably will never finish :)

This isn't the game title, it's currently undecided. But, it's vaguely fitting... sorta, haha.

Here's the current titlescreeen, it was really meant to be the prologue :P I just never got around to changing it.

I'm using moghunter's animated titlescreen, that's why there are those weird balls :)

Here's the game over screen, I wanted it to have the same feeling to it.

37 hour gap, am I am cpt obv wizard or wat?

Her child appearance is really cute, maybe you could try making kids versions of the RTP Actors and upload it (with a watermark), and have it up for people to request to buy individually or as a pack.

eheh, thaanks! ^^ Hmm, I don't really feel like i'm experienced enough to get paid yet :P This is only my 5th or 6th portrait or something :S

However, I think i'm going to open a shop or something :) I just don't know how much time I'd get for these, since school is starting on tuesday again.

My teachers have gone into sadistic mode ._. How long do people usually take to complete requests?

Aw, you're school isn't that bad - enroll in Honnouji Academy and then talk to me about sadism. I feel the same way about commissions, having a lot of work experience (ie. Portfolio) helps reinforce your ability to be a competent worker and shows your consistent style (which is why I can never do commissions), but you're doing very fine as is right now. Requests may take 1-2 weeks but always varies based on the workload, being able to work fast is a good trait to have, but buyers should expect a wait time of a week or more. The only thing you need to be swift about is just starting the requested piece.

And yes, do open a shop, you've just received a commission from a Gallery Critique, it'll occur much more with an opened shop. Read up on others' shops to know how the template works and have a display of work that you have (with watermark) to show what you can do. A good sum of people registered as members only create accounts to request stuff, good hunting.
