The Evolution of Mine Trees

Recommended Posts

On the advice of a friend, i've decided to expand my demo to include an outdoor area, showcasing more the potential full-game's palette.

I've written about it on my blog, so I won't labour on, I just thought I'd get some reactions to my designs (since these are my first ever trees and they took two days).

The main effort was in finding a way to keep my designs of trees similar to my style of design when it comes to bricks and pipes and so on. A mix, I sort of hope, between slightly cartoonish and realistic.

Cheers all.

Wow, they're gorgeous! They remind me a lot of Ayene-chan's work. :) The shadows are slightly awkward as they appear to be partially noon-shadow and partially evening shadow (since they are both surrounding the tree base and extending far out).

Wow!! I must find your game. O_O

Those tiles are so gorgeous! I agree... i love how you did your trees. Mine don't compare at all... T_T lol.

The details and lighting and style just look so attractive/ beautiful to me. Though i admit, if there is only one thing i find a bit odd, i think i would agree with Tsarmina and say the combination of noon/evening shadows imo.

Thanks all :)

It's funny, I spend so many hours staring at these at a pixel level that I fail to notice things like the shadows.

They're easily fixed (thank you Photoshop's Magic Wand Tool)

The demo is still in the works, it's about 75% done at the moment. I'll be posting it proudly when it's done.

EDIT

I couldn't get your suggestions off my mind so I went ahead and gave solving the problem a go. I wanted the shadows to indicate noon, now that I think about it, so I've moved all of the shadows to directly beneath the trees:

(Apologies, I didn't have time to mock up a scene, this is just the trees arranged into a gathering)

Hopefully I can get the passability to work well when they're installed into Ace. You know, which parts you can pass behind and so on.

It should work--if you're parallaxing just use blank tiles with passability settings, and if you're compiling them into a real tileset just make sure they fit neatly into a grid position (no overlapping corners or anything).

Yeah, the only problem is, I didn't draw the trees to fit a 32x32 grid, so some cropping and/or cunning placement is going to be necessary.
