Some screenshots from my project 'Return of the Lost'

Recommended Posts

Currently in the early stages of my project. Just wanted some feedback on my maps so I can improve on them in any way. All done in the editor.

My first impression that its greatly mapped.

Add more shots.

But looks good so far.

Thanks for the comments guys ^_^ The project still in very early days so I haven't done too many maps but I'm striving to do at least 2 a day. Sooooo more should follow soon :D

@Euphoria: The grass tileset is Hanzo Kimura's. The trees and tent tilesets are also his.

Cool, they look really good, so I'll check them out!

Hmm, nothing i haven't seen before. No offense intended, just that almost everyone who uses parallax mapping makes use of those tilesets, they have become very common. The cave is a little bit too dark, i know it was at purpose but you should make it a tad bit less dark.

The tent map is pretty cool, i lke it.

Btw, the first map is a forest? because if it is, it should be more populated. And i'm talking about trees.

I know their quite common but I personally really like them :P

The first one isn't a forest. Just a clearing with quite a few trees.

I have been having trouble with finding the right lighting for the cave, if I go any lighter you don't really see the lantern effects the character is carrying so I'm not quite sure what to do there. Plus it's a cavern with no light sources so it's I was kinda going for the almost too dark to see effect.

But thanks for the comments every critique helps.

I feel like i was too rude, sorry for that.

Anyways, the problem surely is the image you're using for the lighting. You should make it brighter and a little bit larger.  If you do it, you can let the darkness as it is right now.

Then, the first one is very pretty : ) i like it.

Aaand i forgot about the last map which, by the way, i really like it. Nice job you made there :P

These are all editor made too - not parallaxed right? I thought they were parallax at first :P that's a good thing though!

Don't worry about it! I'll try messing around with the light image. It was what came with the script demo so I didn't wanna mess around with it too much in case I messed it all up!

All done in the editor. As much as I like parallaxed maps I don't want my game to become too large in size. That's not to say I won't do any parallax mapping, if I feel the map needs it. :)

Looks really nice, I'm impressed. You are quite gifted.

Haha I wouldn't say I'm gifted, not compared to a lot of other mappers out there. But thanks I'm glad you think so!

I think the parallax look comes from the big trees and some nice clumping of things. It's really good looking for just using the editor.

Couple of new screens. I've been practicing my light effects, still trying to get the hang of it. :/

I like it but it needs more light objects.

The tavern one? There's kinda a reason for it being dark, in short there's been a lack of supplies to the village so general supplies are low, including stuff like candles. So that's why the only light source is the fireplace, cause they don't have a shortage of firewood. Plus with only a couple of customers it'll be a waste to use what little supply of candles are left.

I think too much on the little details sometimes :P

If you meant the second one as well......Yeah I guess it'll make sense to have a couple of lights in there.

Hmmm i like your mapping. You improved the light effects, didn't you?  it seems cool and realistic, but there is one detail... :) that white lighting effect at the bottom looks pretty bad, not natural at all. Not like you open your house's door and an enormous blinding light enters. Do the same you did with the torch but in the door part, obviously, not that wide.

The other one is interesting. The screenshot itself doesn't tells "what is it", i mean, what kind of scene and scenario it is. There is alot of water around so i can't tell, but overall it looks neat.

I took your advice and made it brighter ^_^ when I was doing the lighting effects I actually did make the light near the entrance bigger but for some reason in game in won't go past that point. It's just a case of I'll sort it when I can figure whats wrong :/

I also tried making the lantern the character carries in the cave brighter, like you suggested, not sure if it's brighter but it's bigger at least. Small steps I guess?

The second one was more to show the light effects I used, since I'm still practicing getting them right.

Someone taking my advices? What is this? The Matrix?

Anyways, what do you mean with "in game it won't go past that point"? o.o

Ah, i see. Well, try adding blur to those lights, they seem too focalized. (I'm speaking about the second screenshot)

Btw, i suggest making the lantern a little bit more big.

I don't know if the last image was there when i made the last comment but, it looks cool. Except for the light. If the map is already bright, why you add lights? or it is just for test purposes?

Edit: i hope this doesn't bother you, but i took the last image and edited it using Photoshop to make some light effects. Just for so you can have an idea of what i'm talking about. A picture is better than a thousand words :P

The part just behind the character, the light doesn't seem to want to shine beyond that point. Even though I made it to shine up to the tables.

Edit: I found out what was wrong, turns out I had two pictures in my overlay folder and was using the older one. Oops.

The second one is mostly just for testing ^-^

Edit: Wow your light effects look pretty awesome. Think I'll definitely edit that map now ^_^

Updated a few maps lighting effects. I haven't done any shadows for one of them but just the lighting makes it far better I think.

Here's a few before and after shots.

Holy f*ck that looks so much better. You got some pretty damn cool stuff there! keep it up with the good work.  What tilesets you used in the last one? o.o

Btw, that font is somewhat hard to read, it's too exagerated. Why you don't use some soft, cool-looking font like Calibri? :3

The Tiles are by Celianna, the recolered chairs are part of Nicnubill's gothic set though.

I've tried Calibri but didn't really like it :/ I've changed it to Hoperound and it looks a lot better. :)
