Forest of Magic Screenshots

Recommended Posts

Hi all! These are some screenshots of the project I'm currently working on. I'm attempting to create maps without Parallax mapping.

Tell me what you think with the up most positive feedback!  ^_^ I kind of get lazy when I do maps more than 100 X 100 lol.

Awesome a Touhou fan game
The maps are looking good, but I wouldn't have the pine trees, they stand out too much from the other type of trees, I'd have one or the other.

Also the actual forest tileset you used. (The A4 one) If you use Mack tile E it has an add on for the forest. So you can make the edges more rounded instead of sharp, and you can fill the green gaps in the trees with more trees.

I have some tree recolors and tree's with flowers I made on my website(linked in my signature) if you would like to try those out. But overall I think they look alright, I like how there are multiple paths instead of one dominant path. The text is a tiny bit hard to read though. At least in the picture with the red windowskin.

Thank you both for the advice!  ^_^ I'll keep those in mind.

It's still an early development so you can bet on a lot of changes.

Still, it's nice to see there's an interest at least.

Because its a first project, I like to keep things simple to the player without any complications.

The woods looks quite good i must say, especially the second one. I love 'em... but... the last map needs heavy improvement :/

lol Don't expect a lot from the last one, ^_^  the last one is a huge event and what you see on that screenshot isn't exactly showing the whole thing. (i.e. transparent events around the characters) I'm also improving the event so visual is not the real problem for me. Thank you for the feedback though!

I like the forest maps.  I personally see no problems having a coniferous/deciduous mixture.

Depends how realistic you want the game. Pine tree needles tend to be acidic once fallen on the ground, which is why you don't really see other trees around pine trees as they kill off any other types.

But of course it's just little details really, the end of the day a game world doesn't have to follow the same rules as ours. so if LadyMinerva's happy with the effect then she should keep it.

That's true, Most of the time you don't see pine trees with other types of deciduous because of its pine needles can make the soil around acidic, but it usually takes a very long time. Most people usually just follow the general forest rule, not many people really pay attention to details such as that.

For me, I wasn't really paying attention to something like to be honest ^_^ most maps I make I focus on the layout, especially large maps like the one in screenshot #2, these kinds of map usually takes me about 2 hours to make because I'm trying to picture what it would look like, and adding something like trees would give me a more visual appearance of the layout. So I'll keep that in mind whenever I make more forest theme maps! Since this project is an early development, you can bet a lot of changes here!
