Feed Back For First Parallax Attempts

Recommended Posts

Greetings One and All,

I have for your admittedly dubious viewing pleasure a couple of map shots that I have done in the parallax style, they are the first parallax maps I have attempted so now I come to you all for your sage advice on what can do to improve them, like I said they are the first ones I have ever done so please feel free to be honest, otherwise how will I get better at it?and SO with out further adoo ......

If credits should be given for this they are:
Lunarea (parallax tiles)
Celianna(parallax tiles)
RTP (from differnt version from xp and up i think )
Mack(pretty certain i used some of those tiles also)
EraYachi(added late due to a c/p messup, but the tile i used in the cave are from his sets)

Looks good. However, the woods around the campfire seems weird. You just rotate it without edit. And that makes the light source goes wrong.

Additionally, those green colors from trees and grasses seems doesn't match. Well, I couldn't tell you how to fix. Since I can't do editing related

Pretty good for your first attempt. I would add more variation with the plants however.

thank you for pointing that out about the logs , im still trying to figure that part out , and i will see if I can manage to switch up the tree leafs to match the grass better.

@Mirage88

Thank you ,and I was afraid of over cluttering the areas , but i will ad more plant /ground cover variances

Don't be too afraid of that in a wilderness map. If a place isn't well traveled it would be overgrown with plant life. Even if it's a well traveled route if people don't wander to far from the road again it'll be quite overgrown.

In the last map, the edge where the crystal meets the wall is a very sharp, flat line. I see you tried using battlebacks, which I like :) but it needs some major smoothing-over. I agree about the logs. Try using Photoshop's Transform>>Distort tool.

I see what you mean now that i look at the last map , thanks for pointing it out , and is there something similar to the distort tool in gimp? Thank you for your feed back.

Sorry, I don't use Gimp. :( Maybe a gentle blending tool or gaussian blur around the area might help a little, but it might just make it look blurry.

I see ya used my parallax edits for your cave. They're snippets from RTP backgrounds, yep. Totally not offended for not getting credit. (not sarcasm, just be careful when crediting ;P)  The perspective on that cave map is a bit wonky, and I'd recommend doing your shading with burn/dodge on individual layers and with various sizes of brushes, as the lighting isn't consistent. The first map has some strange perspective problems to--half of it looks directly top-down, and the other is more traditional RTP style.

For your first try, this is quite good. Remember to use lots of layers, especially with trees, to avoid overlap issues. Continue with the good work!

Edit: I do use GIMP. To blur things, there is a Blur tool, which is also a Sharp tool if you need to make something less blurry. Overall, you can affect an entire layer with blur/sharp using the Filter > Enhance option.
