Simulator on RPGMaker

Recommended Posts

Although I'm experienced in programming (I work on Unity so I'm very fluent in C# and Java), I'm tempted to start working with RPGMaker for an idea I've had for a while now. If anything it'll be a proof of concept that I can easily share before I attempt to publish the game (likely in Unity seeing as RPGMaker is unable to port to other mobile aside from PC).

In any case, as the title suggest the game is primarily a simulator. It still takes place in a generic fantasy rpg setting (heroes, classes, exp, level, etc.) but those instead of being the generic MC, you play as an one of the NPC. A Blacksmith, Innkeeper, etc. A simulator where you basically make a living supplying theses 'heroes'.

Now there will be bits of actual rpg elements for the player, like leveling up as a blacksmith, but I'd like to know if a game focused on being a simulator is possible to develop on RPGMaker. I suppose I shouldn't say "possible", I'm sure it is, rather is it feasible? I'm well aware that they'll be intense scripting needed, I'm no stranger to that.

If anybody has any experience trying to make a simulation game (not counting dating sims, just too different), please give your thoughts or tips on how I should go about doing this. Or if anybody have stumbled or played a simulator game built on RPGMaker, please refer them to me with a link is possible.

Thank you

~Zai

Somehow, reading your post made me a little sad. The game sounds a little like Recettear, anyway, I'm thinking you're not really asking whether you can make a simulator with RPGMaker but rather how robust RPGMaker can be or how complex you can make a simulator before RPGMaker gives up on you. A lot of people here and the other place can probably answer more specific questions (like the limits most people don't know or even reach)

I've seen and read about some farming simulators if those count, I believe there's one in the Masterpiece Theatre right now.

Simulator? Sure, it is possible. Now if you are asking how far does the simulation go, the answer is: As long as it is not 3D. The simulator can be something that does Bartending, Mixing Items and whatnot, depending which job that is. You can easily do some choice based things to make things work. For scripting, you might need it depending on which complex the system you're making is. Anything than that, I'd say it is feasible, but in 2D.

above of all, what you need is randomize your NPC or event, AI for each difficulties, achievements (this can be done easily using quest journal script, I think), and newgame+ (I mean some new mode unlocked after the player finished main campaign). Ah, as you experienced in programming it shouldn't too hard to code it, right?
