PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted July 28, 2017 Very nice. Makes me wonder what you can't draw/illustrate.
RetroExcellent 369 Posted August 3, 2017 Wow this is some serious skill! I could learn a thing or sixteen from you.
Amysaurus 734 Posted August 4, 2017 Hmmm... I've mostly been working on requests/commissions lately, so here's a look at one I finished yesterday-ish:@Shaddow Thank you! I can always try and give you a crash course sometime if you're interested ^^@PhoenixSoul Hmm... I think anyone can draw anything if they have enough time (results may vary)! Even awkward permanent marker still lives of a skeleton holding a caribou head by the antler: Spoiler College drawing classes are weird.
Lord Vectra 414 Posted August 4, 2017 Amy, looking good!
PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted August 4, 2017 @Amysaurus lol That is very, very queer. (Moderators look here before flinging any sort of spoilsport tactics at me) The college class assignment, that is unheard of to me. Using permanent marker for sketches, how absurd. Even still, it is excellent work. Now if only I could remember what it was I was thinking of when I was wondering what you couldn't draw...
Lord Vectra 414 Posted August 4, 2017 (edited) That skeleton image tho XD Why does the animal look so happy XD His life must've been hard if he appreciated death lol Edited August 4, 2017 by Lord Vectra
Amysaurus 734 Posted August 11, 2017 Hehehe, thanks you two ^^ Lately I've been busy with commissions, so I don't have too much to show off atm. Here's a portrait I made while I was taking a break:
PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted August 11, 2017 Hmm... Bat brooch is very reminiscent of a costume piece from a non-RPG related game (there was a similar costume piece available for custom characters in Guitar Hero 5, Band Hero, Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, and I think DJ Hero though I might be mistaken on that one). Well illustrated, as usual. I'm surprised this isn't your full time career, besides being a mother.
Amysaurus 734 Posted August 13, 2017 (edited) Here's a commission I finished up today: @PhoenixSoul Huh. Neat. I haven't played many of those games, lol On 8/11/2017 at 6:54 PM, PhoenixSoul said: Well illustrated, as usual. I'm surprised this isn't your full time career, besides being a mother. Thanks! I've still got a year of university left, so I've been sifting through my career options. And, ummm.... I'm... not a mother? Not sure if I'm missing a joke here Edited August 13, 2017 by Amysaurus
PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted August 13, 2017 @Amysaurus I must of confused you with someone else that has several kids. Not hard to do...
Amysaurus 734 Posted September 24, 2017 (edited) It's been a while! Here's some traditional artwork (each drawing took about 10-20 mins.): Here's some digital work as well: Edited September 24, 2017 by Amysaurus
PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted September 24, 2017 Wow! Your carbon sketches are super! I must know. What is the density of the carbon in your pencils? Oh, and that hula girl.... hiii hiii hiii.... (refrained)
Amysaurus 734 Posted September 24, 2017 Thanks! Charcoal and ink are my favorite traditional medias, so I love when I get to use them in class ^^ I used compressed charcoal sticks for the larger, shaded areas (the labels are worn down, but probably 3B/2H) and then vine charcoal for the sketchier areas. There's also a bit of soft pastel and chalk for color, but not much. That last sketch was just a regular permanent marker, so nothing special.
PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted September 25, 2017 @Amysaurus Nice! I too use compressed charcoal, though for a different purpose (it is quite an effective reagent for making non-metallic poxies). Just permanent marker, eh? Looks like more than enough to dry a fresh marker, unless you used a Sharpie (those damn things never dry up! lol). Got a question. Have you ever tried to make a costume just like your avatar? That would be interesting to see. Though I imagine the hair would be a tad difficult...
Amysaurus 734 Posted December 7, 2017 (edited) @PhoenixSoul Ah, can't say I have! I don't have much time for sewing outside of the summer ^^ Eeeek! School has been making me super stressed. The semester is almost over, though! I haven't been able to do a lot, but here's a set of Zelda icons I'm working on: and here's some character art I'm working on: Edited December 8, 2017 by Amysaurus
PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted December 8, 2017 @Amysaurus The icons are really neat! Love your artwork (character for your game project?). Ehhh...I know the feeling about not having time/motivation to do stuff (this time of year + the change of the seasons really hits me hard in that area...) Amysaurus 734 Posted January 23, 2018 (edited) @Takeo212 I went ahead and made a video last night because.... why not? (Note: I zoom out a lot so I can see how the sprite would look in-game) Spoiler Here's the finished sprite, for comparison: Edited January 23, 2018 by Amysaurus
PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted January 23, 2018 @Amysaurus What software do you use for screen recording? Anyway, I like that you do everything from just the base.
Amysaurus 734 Posted January 23, 2018 @PhoenixSoul I generally use Quicktime for screen recording. ^^ And yeah, I figured it'd make the most sense to make one from scratch if I'm going to do a video, haha. I'm a firm believer in not reinventing the wheel, so most of my sprites have bits and pieces from other sprites of mine or generator parts that I put together and edit. Like, I'm not going to make 15 capes/shoulder pads when I can take one set and change it as needed, lol.
PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted January 23, 2018 Hmmm... I may look into that for the same since Bandicam is resource-heavy... I'm also curious if the paint shop software you used is also Mac-only... Yeah, I tend to use the parts generators provide for most of the stuff I create, however, I have to do everything else (like the lipcolor on my avatar as one of many examples) by hand, though it isn't that difficult to do once one has an idea on how to go about it...(usually - I have had my fair share of scrapping things I was unable to implement...) Yep, I created this avatar in Game Character Hub; it is all MV parts, just horizontally flipped to represent the VX Ace RTP angle. You'll see this a lot more when you play (or if) my upcoming game. But anyway, the way you rock your art strikes many melodious chords with me. Keep it up, and as I said, good luck with your studies. Oh, and sleep is your friend; get as much as you can. + Takeo212 1,079 Posted January 24, 2018 (edited) @Amysaurus Oooooh. Watching that, you make it look so easy haha (welp, it probably is since you practiced so much with it). I always started with a black outline for stuff like hair, but watching your method makes more sense and is easier to work it. I think it's the sideview sprites that give me the hardest time since the perspective is sometimes off (like drawing a womans low cut top for instance). Thanks for taking the time to make that video~ It was short, but fun seeing how you handle shades and detailing. I love hair~ And that's true. Drawing from scratch each time is just unneeded extra work. I usually edit the generator hair to make what I need but it can get limiting. I love your style~ @PhoenixSoul The software looks like Photoshop which is a windows software actually, though I could be wrong. Amysaurus 734 Posted January 24, 2018 @PhoenixSoul Ah, nope! I use Clip Studio Paint for both drawing and pixel art, and it works on Mac and Windows. It's by far my favorite software for digital art, though I'd recommend waiting for a sale if you want to pick it up. Spending $50 on software is gross. No promises on the sleep thing (insomnia is fun!), but I try, haha! @Takeo212 No problem! At the risk of sounding like an actual dinosaur, I've been spriting for just over 10 years now, lmao. There's a point where the shading and all of that becomes almost second nature - you start to notice how outlines are shaded or how highlights are placed, etc. I don't mind doing the side-view sprites much - for me it's the back views (hair, specifically) that usually mess me up.
Amysaurus 734 Posted February 11, 2018 I'm a big meanie, so for practice (for both of us!) I've been having Nirwanda help me out by drawing character portraits for me to work from.
PhoenixSoul 1,404 Posted February 11, 2018 Looks really nice. So, how're classes these days? I know it must be hard to get anywhere in this cold...
Amysaurus 734 Posted February 11, 2018 (edited) @PhoenixSoul Thank you! Classes are.... meh, not bad. I like 'em so far. I'm taking: • Microcomputer Applications: Funny story - I thought I'd signed up for a programming course, but it turned out to be a course over how to use Microsoft Office. All of the work is online, so you don't have to go to class if you're a week ahead and have a 70% or higher. My professor told me to not come back to class for the rest of the semester, because I got bored and ended up being 7 weeks ahead of the course schedule. • Interactive Design 2: Pretty fun course - it goes over writing/interpreting JavaScript, and front-end design for apps and whatnot. Right now we're doing the front-end development/designing for food delivery applications that the computer science students are coding. • Advanced Study: These classes are always fun - you basically sign up for a class you've already completed, then spend the semester on a project you decide on. Last semester I made an opening sequence, save menu, title screen, and ending credits sequence for my game, and this semester I'm working on backgrounds, sprites, and weather effects. • Senior Seminar: Kinda lame, but it's a graduation requirement and a lot of my friends are in here. Basically we go over how to transition from college to professional careers, and work on resumés, cover letters, etc. on top of putting on senior art exhibit. There are a lot of guest speakers, but they haven't been very good so far. • Principles of Economics: (....I needed one more class to live on campus.) This class is kinda meh, but it's better than I was expecting. The only assignments per se are online tests every other week, and then one presentation I give using my webcam. I pretty much just forget the class exists until the Thursday of a test week, read the whole chapter, then take the test.
