What do you think about a full Tactical Battle RPG?

Recommended Posts

We've all seen the tactical battle system of Fire Emblem, and Final Fantasy Tactics, and Tactics Ogre... well I was thinking: what if you applied the battle system not just to battles, but to the full game?

With a few adjustments, you'd have something like a pseudo-chess RPG where moving around the map is done by simply holding down the direction keys/buttons (with monsters on the map moving every time the player changes a cell, uses an item, or attacks or casts; but performing actions like attacks involve pressing the menu, selecting from a list of available stuff, and then selecting a target on the grid in a similar way to most TBS attacks.

Beating the monster events would then erase them, allowing a respawn if you change map.

So basically, the entire game becomes one huge battle of Fire Emblem played across multiple maps.

I think it's cool, and I'm currently trying to find out what scripts I need to pull it off. So far, I found some good TBS scripts, but... they all divide the gameplay between map movement and battles.

If anyone's familiar with pixel dungeon... that's what I'm thinking of; except it isn't rougelike so much as it is RPG.

Make sure to NOT do random battles, if you're working on a tactical system. My friends and I attempted a game in RMXP with GubiD's system, and it...didn't go so well. The gameplay was far too drawn out. Having a trainer or some place to have people fight for levels would work much better.

Can't help you on the script, but "what do you think of,..." => I think this is a great idea if you find the scripts to pull it off.

But as the poster above me said, don't add random encounters (but it seems you're not thinking that way, as all enemies would be on map, meaning you'd probably only fight when colliding with a monster event)

If this is well worked out, it will be a project I'd surely follow and try.

Like an open world tactics game? That would be really cool if someone could pull out a game like that :3 I'm a big fan of tactical games whether its real time ot turn based ^~^

Basically an open world dungeon crawler? I like the idea, but make sure the maps are small enough and have enough going on where its not just a click-fest.

Actually, it could work pretty well. Grand Knights History did something like that:

I have a game similar to that in the works but its only turn based in the dungeons. There are wandering monsters that will persue you you get within their site range and when/if they catch you, a battle is started. Not sure if I'm going to be using a battle system for it or building my own on the map.

But to answer your question; if done right then yes, it would be a great idea.

I love tactic games and think it'd be great to implement it somehow.
But I think the closest thing that comes to a complete tactical RPG is the one someone made at the VX.
I believe it was used in Eremidia Dungeon.

Fallout 1, 2 and Tactics basically work like this, well once you leave the overworld travel map. Ultima 6 and 7 use this method completely. It's actually sort of the preferred system for Western RPGs of the 90s. I wish it were more popular still.
