Composer in the Making Needs Help!

Recommended Posts

Hey guys!

I've just got myself Fl Studio 11, and I really want to start creating music for my project. Problem is, I've never used a music creating software before, and there are quite a few things I can't get a grip on. I've search for many tutorials, but most of them only show how to arrange certain paterns in order to make a good RPG song. Thing is, what I need to know is much more basic than that: I can't figure out how to effectively create new channels. Do I need to download samples or something? There are a few already in the program but... they all sound horrible. How could I get a nice sounding harp? Or panpipes, or a traverse flute? I really can't figure it out...

If someone could explain or point me to a nice tutorial, it would be much appreciated!

When you are starting out, it's really the case of just trying it out. You've just gotta find where your little part of the musical world is. Music relating to RPG's are commonly using "Orchestral" instruments. If you are wanting to keep it as cheap as possible (i.e free) then I'd highly suggest DSKMusic VST's and instruments. They are incredibly amazing for starters to use.

If you are wanting to go for a more classic RPG Game feel than I highly suggest FluidR3 and Cadenza Strings. For a slightly more modern day orchestral sound try Sonatina Symphonic Orchestra!

If you are happy to spend a little bit of money (but you're still on a tight budget) Garritan Instant Orchestra is a great start, especially if you have zero knowledge of how to write for an Orchestra :)

Other than that, it's just a case of keeping on trying, listen to pieces you would love to recreate, and just do it :)

And about FL studios, I'm not saying you did this, but in case you did use a pirated version => usually they are just demo versions unless you work your way around that. (Being vague for a reason)

Which I got no knowledge of, and wouldn't share.

But that would be a way of explaining why you'd only have a few instruments and samples.

If you did buy FL, the answer should be on google. But Sir Jonnie his programs seem a lot more starters friendly! I'd follow his advice.

Actually there is a cheaper edition of FL Studio which is hopefully what he has purchased.

If in the event you HAVE "acquired" a copy, I'd highly suggest removing it from your computer and using a freeware alternative such as LMMS which can do the majority of the things that FL Studio can do.

It's very easy to do that with the standard FL synthesizer named Sytrus:

Click on "Channels"

Click on "Add One"

Click on "Sytrus"

Click on the Channel in the Pattern View and then follow the screenshot, I attached.

I could recommend the following instruments:

Piano->Metal Harp

Piano->Harpo

Wind->Flute

DX7->Pan Flute

You need a String Ensemble?

Click on "Soundfonts" in the Browser and then just drag "STR_Ensemble" in your pattern view.

Welcome to all the instruments, you need :)

Example of these instruments (Also used Choir, Glass Bells FPC Drums):

Merdouille, I want to hear what you make! I don't care how beginner it sounds. I will even show you some of my early stuff. But my music style is less RPG and more...Cyberpunk/weirdo. I have found that the Germans and Japanese are the people who listen to my music most... :)

Haha sounds cool where can I hear it?

Also right now I'm just trying to get a grip of the program (like adding some sick drums beats to The Lost Wood song from Ocarina of Time).

I am but a drummer, so I don't know that much about musi theory, but I plan on taking some lessons to learn piano. After a few classes I'm sure it will improve drastically :)
