My first maps in rpgmaker! Give me your opinion please * - *

Recommended Posts

I'm using rpg maker for 3 weeks. And after some testing, and research, I found the parallax method. Once I understood how it works, I began to make my first maps, and would like to ask you guys what you think. I know I need to improve, but I still have much difficulty.

Give me your opinion! I like criticism. Because then I can improve what I'm doing wrong.

I'm sorry if I wrote something wrong, I learned to speak English by myself. Thank you so much!

In first one,

The default shadows from the map editor look weird, since the lighting is coming from the lightsources on the wall, so they should have been illuminated.

Last one,

Blue bottles have wrong background.

But I like the lighting in all of them.

Thank you Glasses! I am glad for your comment! * - *

I'll be taking notes of all comments. To dont make the same mistakes in the next maps.

I have a question, can I remove the editor shadows?I never tried to do that.

Whoa, these look amazing~! For your first three weeks, you've produced really great stuff. You've bypassed the 'huge' maps a lot of newbies create, and everything is placed with thought. I honestly can't spot anything you're doing wrong, dear. Keep up the nice work! :)

(I especially love the lighting in the second snap...so pretty! I've never seen anything like it. *Q*)

Just a consideration - on the second map, you may need to do some shift-click mapping. It looks like you want the floor to be mossy only around the edge, but it makes your edge at the bottom look like it is at the top of the wall. I had the same issue with carpeted rooms.

Definitively a good start. Taking into account that you only have 3 weeks, you're far above from average. Yet you still have errors xD

I will not speak about shadows projection (the direction in which the shadows are projected) Because that is a way too complex stuff that i don't even understand. However, i do can say that your shadows are sometimes too exaggerated. Caves and interior maps are perfectly fine to be dark as hell, but the second map... it's projecting a huge, black shadow... it's enormous. You have to remember that these are games, not real life, that means that sometimes you gotta adjust things to look good to the eyes rather than 'realistic'

Speaking about that map, it looks pretty messy. I mean, effects and so on are cool but i see lots of clutter around, distributed in a random way. Looks noisy.

Btw, i recommend you to make the light that come from torches have an orange color instead of white.

Good work.

Nothing to add to what has been said already except for this: avoid using pure black for shadows, but dark blue instead – this is the color that classic painters use, it chokes less than black. Also, this color will fit better the yellow-orange of torchlights as well as the pale yellow of the sun beams: this is called complementary colors – check out this tut of mine for more info on this point.

What others said, plus I feel the overlay is a bit to strong in the second map. Maybe tone it down a pinch. Otherwise, great job overall.

Nothing else to suggest other than what has already been suggested.

BTW: I don't know what you're talking about in regards to your English, but it seems you have a better grasp on it than most native English language speakers.

Keep up the good work, can't wait to see what you can do after taking into account some of these suggestions. You all rule.

After stating you have only been working in RPG Maker for 3 weeks, these are awesome maps! I have no other tips other than if you keep going like that, i am sure you will be quite the map maker!

Good job!
