VERGO The Jade Ring has been renamed VERGO Tale Of Betrayal 2 due to plot holes and such with the inclusion of The Jade Ring. This game now has a completely revamped story and a bit better guidance throughout the game. Things are about 50% complete at this time and I'm working to finish this game very soon. Check out the Screenshots section for viewing pleasure. The demo is ready in the downloads section. Most every script was either built by me or heavily modified to fit my needs. Please do not ask for scripts as they are built into the game and can't really be pulled out separately. I'm always looking for feedback or features people are interested in so feel free to post those, however, because I'm so far into the game it would have to be something that can be added easily (such as a script) or something really good that I can't pass up. Thanks for viewing this topic, please check out the spoiler tabs. I also feel the need to say this is the second VERGO game. The first game's story is spelled out in the Story section, however, there are major spoilers if you plan to play the first game.

Story

Over 3000 years have passed since a massive war once tore the land of Remkore in two. On one side a powerful sorcerer named Agon and his nearly infinite army wished to rule the land and on the other a different sorcerer, Plagarus, and any man that loved freedom fought against him. However, the battle was over before it began; Agon and his army crushed the freedom fighters and left nothing but fire and destruction in their wake. Plagarus was then visited by a demoness, who tricked him into believing she was an angel. The demoness told Plagarus to kneel at the Alter of Karr and any wish would be granted. Plagarus flew at the oppertunity and found the alter. Thinking he was getting a blessing for opposing evil he wasn't prepared for what followed. A powerful demon named Flarus suddenly appeared and told Plagarus that in exchange for destroying his enemy he had to serve him for all time. Plagarus felt trapped but finally agreed to the bargain and was made immortal.

Flarus' power ripped through the land sweeping away all traces of Agon and his army. Remkore was finally at peace... or was it? Flarus demanded Plagarus collect four mystic stones for him that would allow him to take over the host body of another. Demons are only allowed to live in a separate dimension unless they can possess another being but the only way to possess a being is to have the four stones. Plagarus could not disobey his new master and began building a vast army to help him search for the stones. The Shadow Army destroyed towns, forests, rivers, and anything that stood in Plagarus' way.

Plagarus was immortal but all did not go well in his search for the stones. One of his closest friends named Nycis betrayed him and prayed to the heavens for a way to defeat him. An angel answered with a powerful sword to strike down evil named VERGO. Armed with a new weapon, Nycis found Plagarus just as he found the last stone and battled him. Plagarus was defeated and forced to retreat, the stones were lost to him again. Nycis built Shrines all over the land to hold VERGO and the mystic stones then he sealed them with powerful magic to keep out Plagarus and his army.

Many years passed and Plagarus had a grandson named Jason. Jason was thrown into the darkness as his grandfather was seemingly murdered in front of him. Plagarus used magic to make Jason believe his grandfather was killed by an evil wizard and the only way to destroy him was to find the four mystic stones. Jason and his best friend decided to find the stones and the sword VERGO and defeat Plagarus once and for all, though after finding the stones was no match for the experienced wizard. Jason in that battle found out that the evil wizard he was chasing all that time was really his grandfather. After another long journey and some help from several others Jason challenged his grandfather one last time and emerged victorious. After the battle was over Jason and his friends used the stones to go to the demonic dimension to defeat the demon Flarus. Flarus was too powerful to destroy completely but the sword VERGO sucked away the spirit of Flarus and imprisoned it inside. Jason then hid the sword and has guarded it carefully ever since.

The land of Remkore had a few years of temporary peace as the Shadow Army fought amongst itself for a leader after the death of Plagarus. Now that Garrack has taken control the world has begun to see an increase of violence and war. The Shadow Army pillages and takes what it pleases as Garrack destroys rebellions and any who dare oppose him. Some say that Garrack has supernatural powers and strength but they are only rumors. Will a hero emerge to stop Garrack before the land is plunged back into darkness?

Features

Mercury Battle System - The mercury battle system was completely designed by myself and emulates Tales series battles. The battles require a fast paced strategy and get increasingly difficult as the game goes on.

Mercury Battle AI - NPC battlers have built in AI that I programmed myself. They attack with appropriate skills (in range, does skill effect enemy etc.), use items (even enemies sometimes), heal themselves and nearby allies when necessary, and flee casters. The AI really is quite complex and has over 1000 lines of code.

Smithing - Crafting materials are dropped by enemies though rare enemies and bosses drop them more often. Use crafting materials at blacksmiths to create new weapons with special effects attached to them.

Cooking - Much like Smithing, cooking is done by finding special ingredients and a recipe. Dishes help you most often in combat.

Interactive and Visually Appealing World - VERGO The Jade Ring is completely built with parallax mapping and has a beautiful world that you can explore. Many items are interactive and secrets are located everywhere.

Questing - During your travels you will find people with little sparkles above their heads. These NPCs have quests for you to do. Completing quests will bring all sorts of rewards from items to EXP.

Environment - There's actually a lot here. I've used After Effects to create animated water, fog, and lava. There's also a day/night system and random weather.

There are many other features but I'll let you find out for yourself what they are.

Battle Screenshots

Battle Screenshots are actually hard to snap because I'm fighting the battle while trying to hit the capture image button (I died several times while doing it - it was quite annoying). I'll upload some video soon so you can see the battles first hand.

1.33GB!!!

tumblr_n1cugbK1oA1rmql4ao1_250.gif

Luckily I got me some fast internets.

If you're able to upload your vids to Youtube you'll be able to embed them into the page.

The videos really showcase your game well though, a lot about it seems very unique... the battles look action-packed and there's a lot of different abilities to try out. The game looks like something one could immerse themselves into quite well.

I like the custom menus as well, everything looks attractive, organized and easy to navigate. It reminds me a lot of a PC RPG I used to play for hours way back in the days of Windows 95, just with way better graphics and special effects.

I will play the game sometime and let you know if I run into any issues.

Thank you I appreciate that. I actually thought about splitting this into two games but then decided against it. Yes I know 1.3 GB and it's only about 65% complete but most of the size is music files and parallax mapping.

Alright a few critiques if I may.

I really like the ambience of the game. I like how there's puzzle solving and skill using that takes place on the maps. Having said that I find doing things slow everywhere when they don't need to be.

If the suspense of having to wait when you travel between rooms or when you flick a switch is part of your vision for the game then by all means don't compromise on that. I just found myself feeling impatient or antsy much too often. Maybe that's just me though...

So if I were you I'd take out the unnecessary delays. Good job on all the work you've done though. Everything looks great.

I understand that. Taking the waits out for flipping a switch wouldn't be difficult but the waits for traveling between rooms is a puzzle to me. What kind of a wait are you experiencing? If it's lag then I need to fix it.

Maybe I can record for you to show you what I mean. What I consider a wait is the fadeout of the character, the pause, the fade in, whereas in most games I think the transition would happen much more quickly.

Alright I understand now what you're talking about. The player opacity transition is definitely something that I like. The switch waiting gets a little old (even for me) and I've thought about changing that for a while now but I'm rather fond of the transition to go say, in a building (character fades out when he enters the door).
