Logo feedback - too simple?

Recommended Posts

I recently tried making a logo for my game with the help of a friend who has Photoshop. While I'm happy with the general feel of it, I worry that it's too simple compared to other game logos I've seen around here. I don't want to bog it down with unnecessary details, but I do want it to be unique. The problem is that I don't actually have Photoshop myself, and I don't want to impose on my friend any more than I already have. I primarily do my image editing with Pixlr, which is essentially a simpler, online version of Photoshop.

Anyway, here's what I have. (You can't really tell on this forum, but the text has a white outline.)

To give you an idea of what Jubilee Royale is like: it falls mostly into the fantasy and romance genres, and the main character is a princess, hence why I wanted a fancy, somewhat girly look. The overall colour scheme is composed of pink, blue, and gold.

I would like to know what you guys think of the logo in general, and whether or not it could be spruced up a little. If you do think it's too simple, what changes could I make that wouldn't involve advanced Photoshop techniques?

It looks quite nice actually. Now there is a lot that could be done though (in my opinion).

Generally you will always want to stay away from thick Strokes (Outlines) on just about anything, as it can use up a lot of space that could be filled with something else. ^^

A way to really bring life into your Logos and just about anything that you make, is thinking about it like it's on different levels or layers:

The Main Idea on top, in this case the Name, the details behind the main idea, and then maybe even smaller details. Always try to add something behind the text, whether it be simple or complex.

I did a quick logo, to show you what I mean. Hopefully it doesn't look too bad.

Basically what I did was made the text, adding a few fractals and textures over it with a small stroke and gradient.

I then went and made a super simple brush to use for the background detail, also applying the same effects on the text to the background.

And then finally went online and found a city render to place behind the background, applied a motion blur to it and set the color to match the text and background.

I separated the logo into different colors, to further the "layered" idea. x3

That looks very nice. :) I'll try playing around with layers, and also thinning the outline. I don't want to get rid of it completely so that the text will still stand out, though. Thanks for your feedback!

Get GIMP it's free and the exact same as Photoshop. You can also try downloading different fonts for free online.

No no no, I would say IF anything it's too complicated, not too simple. But I like it, considering it is a romantic girly thing etc it suits like you say. It is very much the 'standard' font for that kind of genre, it fits, but I think perhaps it could be simplified slightly. You could quite easily go with the way it is though and I don't think anyone would mind.

I wouldn't compare your logo to logos here, get inspiration from the big successful stuff similar to your idea. Even then it is a matter of opinion.

I find it a bit hard to read look at sleeping beauty and beauty and the beast logo they are really simple or snow white just has a bit more with some swirls. It's up to you tho, like I said it fits the genre.

Maybe you could find a middle ground between what I have used below at the end and the one you have. E.g a few swirls?

Personally I think simple is better for logos anyway. Some are the name of the product or some are a graphic. Sometimes you can have both. Or sometimes the name has logo elements like the diamond you have. If it is a simple name you can get away with a more abstract logo. I.e don't have a giant crown for your logo, it's overdone. It's called Jubilee Royale, without you telling me, I know it is about a princess. If it was called I dunno 'Xephyr Maxim' you might want a pic of a crown or princess so that people 'get' what it's about.

With simple you have to think of something clever if it is to stand out. It is easy to make something stand out with lots of detail but it is not necessarily 'standing out' for the right reasons.

The thing I find is that it doesn't really stand out to me or anything, it just is. It is hard work to make something unique. You could draw your own font perhaps. Or add some alterations. For example the R in royale could be the princess dancing or something I dunno. Or the logo could be something significant in the story, something cool, e.g look at assassins creed logo, don't really
know what that thing is, but it looks cool and stands out/ unique.

If it is related them I think it should be something subtle. I was bored so here's a wee example.

If I had more time I might have simplified the couple kissing a bit more I dunno.

I am not telling you 'DO THIS' it is merely one idea of probably thousands, but maybe it can spark some
brainstorming...

On the right you can see the J and R combined. That was the start of a spiral of ideas lol. And
Dejavu serif italic is the font I used.

Tbh Thinking about it I reckon designing the logo would probably be the last thing you do, once you know your game inside out and then you can pick something to sum it up. :) You can literally design the logo forever tho lol. Everyone will have a different

opinion so do something you like :)

What you've come up with there is just what I had in mind! I love the idea of keeping it simple but subtly incorporating an image. I'll think about important symbols in the story that could play a role in the logo.

I know I can come up with a logo later, but I suddenly wanted to make one and figured that it's not a bad idea to act while I'm inspired.

Glad you like it!

Maybe some fireworks? lol they are all swirly like the font.

Aye inspiration comes and goes...

*stares at the wall*

I mean with the only thing to go on that it is about a princess there is not much unique to put in a logo. Is she just a bog standard princess? Or maybe the princess has a machine gun that would be different :D

Princess breaks bad...

Jubilee Battle Royale

Not those fireworks...

Ahaha, that logo is great. She does have an axe that's bigger than her - perhaps I could incorporate that somehow. :P

Here I am, about to say something insightful, but I see I don't need to, since you've already got the ball rolling on your logo.

Great job by the way! Looks great! If you are still working on it, I wouldn't mind seeing the final product when it's done~

I tried my hand at making Logo 2.0 tonight and ended up with something that's...actually quite similar to what I had before. I tried incorporating some images, but couldn't really come up with anything that looked the way I wanted it to, so I stuck with the gemstone on the 'I'. However, I picked a more readable font, shuffled the colours around, and in thinking about 'layers' and such, tried applying a subtle shimmery effect overtop.

It's also somehow even more ridiculously girly-looking than it was before. Still, I am very pleased with it! What do you guys think?

I think this one looks great! The font is more readable and the color choice is nice. ^^

You're defiantly taking a step in the right direction. =)

Yeah it is very similar but for some reason more readable.. I guess it's the angle the letters are at.

But green text and purple gem or green gem and purple text now that is the question hmm...

Could even be the colour that helps the readability dunno

You know, I think it is the angle. The first logo was pretty italicized, but not as much with this one.

I'm personally liking it better with the current colour scheme (blue text and pink gem), but do let me know if you liked the original scheme better. If so, I'll try making another logo with the old scheme for comparison.
