Cr88tions 7 Posted February 16, 2015 (edited) Hey all, I have been fiddling with the basic tilesets to try and get a slightly different look for my game. My artistic/technical skill is not the best but I have uploaded pictures of my changes so far. I have included the standard tilesets as a frame of reference (The regulars are on the left). Dungeon A1 Dungeon A2 Dungeon A4 There are more but the file upload limit is stopping me from adding them. But any feedback on these basic ones would be appreciated. Whiona 310 Posted February 16, 2015 Seems like you have mostly darkened and intensified the colours a little bit. There are good and bad points to this. If you want a colourful-looking game that really pops out at the player, then the colour changes are appropriate for that. On the other hand, though, you run the risk of your maps being a little eye-hurting. Maybe only intensify the colours for some of the tiles, like houses, but not for things like ground tiles that will be all over the place. Something else to consider: if you do go with more intense colours, you may want to find a way to make character sprites pop out more against the map. Cr88tions 7 Posted February 17, 2015 Thanks for the move! Once again I am being a bit slow with the placement of my posts. :S And yeah, I left the tile-sets for a few hours and looking back over them with a critical eye... I'm not so keen on them now Does anyone have suggestions for simple tweaks that can be accomplished easily?
Ersatzteil 2 Posted February 17, 2015 Simple color overlays or adjusting brightness and contrast can be great in moderation. Another way to make tiles *POP* is to go through with some black or gray and do hard outlines if you like that style of work (more comic book or hard drawn). Then there's even spot adjustment. Instead of brightening the whole picture just pick certain spots that "need" attention. Make brights brighter and shadows darker. Make sense?
Necromedes 103 Posted February 17, 2015 Oh, you want eye hurting? I used the "Ink" effect on the sprites in one of my older project attempts. Made for an interesting art style but really needed the saturation turned down. OUCH. As for the tile edits, I suggest trying your hand at re-coloring some of them. The red carpet, for instance, would be a great asset to have available.
