Simple_Soul 1 Posted April 29, 2015 I know this isn't much but I was hoping someone could give me a little advice/critique as I'm really new to spriting and I already feel like I worked my butt off. lol This is the lead character of my project so far, the face was made 100% custom but the sprites are Pokemon edits. Do they work well together? Is the dithering I attempted halfway correct? Also, I feel a bit guilty using edits because I kinda always envisioned making something completely of it's own. Should I try to make all the sprites myself?
+ Chaosian 617 Posted April 29, 2015 Hello and welcome!, I had to copy the image, and really, really zoom in (about 1500%) to see what was happening, but from my perspective it's quite serviceable as a character and good enough for a style to come out of so in that respect, good on you. You might have some troubles getting it to animate like a sprite, but that's for down the line I think. I think you can move on from here, animate the character, and start developing others like them if you're up for it because when making characters like this, you're developing a whole new style. You will need to do all the characters in the game, if not all the tilesets too in this style, so it's a really big task that you may or may not have fully considered. Other than that, the profile's neck is a bit too prominent and it lacks shoulders giving a bit of a giraffe like appearance. Also without any kind of top band the headphones (I'll assume they're white headphones or earmuffs) are completely disconnected and visually a bit odd. Maybe they're under the toque / beanie?

Thanks for the reply and sorry about the small image! I should've posted a zoomed pic. Anyway the neck thing was intentional, it was actually supposed to resemble the face graphics from Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles a bit. I always loved the way they looked for some reason. As for the earmuffs, they were meant to be attached to the blue hat and hang down but now that I'm looking at them I think they need to be moved down a bit and I need to look at how the hair comes out of the hat because it doesn't read right. Imo... i kind of agree here with Chaosian regarding the neck. It's a bit long, and i think it would look better if the neck was a bit shorter. I think you could also even move it to the left a bit, since the position it's in now is a bit unnatural. : ) From this, for the earmuffs (on the sprites' side views), you could move the earmuffs a bit more closer to the centre of the head as well. I agree with your opinion on moving them down, though, and making the hair more prominent!
Valvatoras 1 Posted June 9, 2015 They look fine to me. I can’t see any problems with them. The one guy does have a long neck. But, otherwise they all look great.
