New Project - Features, Gameplay, Scripts and Resources

Recommended Posts

Greetings fellow RPGMakerVXAce Developers!

I have made the hard decision to scrap my current and long running project in development, Monster Hunter Logan: Redux because of script incompatibilities and more importantly, because it just isn't fun to play, mostly due to my combat system and combat feature choices.

So, in an attempt to start off a new and better planned project, I am going to select and configure all of the scripts and ensure stability before I do anything else in the project.

Also, I'd like some feedback on if certain features and scripts would be easier to manage than others based on other developer's previous experiences.

IDEAS:

  • Use primarily Yanfly scripts to modify menus and use a light/novice side view battle system.
  • Use primarily Yanfly scrips to modify menus, combat systems, and use a front view system and take advantage of some premium DLC packs that have front view battlers.
  • Use LUNA Engine to modify menus and use the supported and proven compatible TheoAllen's TSBS for the battle system.
  • Fiddle with various scripts from other scripters who don't require core modules such as Vlue and Tsukihime to modify the game in various ways and use alternate battle systems.

Also, any suggestions on scripts to include to help streamline development like a word wrapping script would be appreciated.

If you feel more comfortable, you can PM me and obtain my Skype ID in case you want to provide feedback in chat form.

Thanks for any help, comments, and suggestions.

The word-wrapping script I personally use is KilloZapit's, which can be found right here. As for your other questions, I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to script compatibility, so I don't think my opinion would be of much help to you. I do find that Yanfly's scripts are simple and easy to use, though.

Good luck with your new project! I hope development goes more smoothly for you this time.

Well, Yanfly Message System + KilloZappit makes a time-saver combo. It's nice to keep these on the project.

On the battle system, TSBS is really cool. Lots of eye candy. The problem would be spriting, those kaduki sprites are a bit overused and I am TERRIBLE at art (I can do recolor, tho).

The system is flexible enough, you can achieve a lot of stuff with it.

If the number of characters is small and you want to go really wild, there's Schalla battle system as well (but be prepared for a ton of work).

Front view can be cool. I personally don't enjoy a lot of information on the screen, so battle scripts like the first Lufia or Phantasy Star seems like good choices - good looking, not a ton of info, intuitive.

Okay, I am starting to move in a direction thanks to help from Sughayyer, CVincent and others who have posted feedback here or in PM's.

I am moving forward with using Luna Engine since I did pay for it, I might as well use it.

I am going to be editing and using Kaduki sprites and using TSBS with the included Luna Engine compatibility fixes for the battle engine.

I am going to be using DS, DS+, and DSRetroFuture tiles and for the first time parallax mapping.

I have even come up with a vague theme and plot!

PLOT:

  • The game starts off as Earth is in a crisis, global ecological failure is causing a massive exodus, with government and private corporations creating colony ships to send into deep space.
  • The player has to finish last minute preparations to ready a colony ship and a few party members go with the main character and head into deep space where they have discovered a definite life sustaining planet.  They repel a few attacks from desperate pirates who are trying to take the ship for themselves and then once clear and accelerating for the distant planet they enter their stasis pods.
  • A malfunction in the guidance system causes the ship to slow down and the party doesn't arrive in orbit of the planet for hundreds of years.  The ship is barely functioning and soon must make a crash landing on the surface.
  • Once there they discover a society of magic and sword using people and strive to find a place in this world in which to live, but are quickly pulled into a struggle against a force of evil who threatens everyone on the planet and quite possibly the galaxy!

Features:

  • Custom Menu System - Using Luna Engine
  • Custom Message System - Using Luna Engine to have busts, name plates and sound effects for text windows.
  • Theolized Side Battle System - TSBS compatibility supported by Luna Engine
  • Crafting - I would like to have a crafting system for players to use advanced technology to harvest components once they are on the magic world to be used for making consumables and upgrading weapons and armor
  • Skill Trees - I would like a more engaging leveling system than simply gaining skills when you level, I am looking into the LUNE Unlimited Skill Tree and Passive Skills scripts by Raizen and will be testing compatibility in the coming days.
  • Parallax Maps - I will be attempting to use parallax mapping with the DS, DS+ and DS Retro Future Premium DLC packs from Steam.
  • Light Effects - I would like to implement a light effects script to have neat light effects, so I will be testing the compatibility of a few of them.  Suggestions on this would be great, as I know how to use Victor's, but I have seen several different scripts from others but never tried them out.
  • Much More??  - Based on input and feedback, other ideas for features will be assessed on a per case basis.

As always, any feedback, comments and suggestions are welcomed in either this thread or to me directly in a PM.

Khas' Awesome Light Effects are awesome.

But I've been itching to try SoulPour's light effects too. They might be easier to use than Khas'.

I don't think Lune's Unlimited Skill Tree is incompatible with what you are using now as well.

Confirmed that Unlimited Skill Trees will work with Luna Engine, I just have to place it below the luna engine scripts and it works fine.

Next project will be to find my light effects and crafting scripts, but I guess I'd need a harvest node script as well, so I'll check out Vlue's crafting and nodes first.

Also making some progress on the menus already!

Nice looking. What about that empty space? Is it reserved for info or sub menus?
