zerobeat032 2 Posted May 12, 2015 so this is Ray and Jack Groves, two of the main characters of my game... using a script that shows them like this (XP Style) during battles. what do you guys think?
Gui 61 Posted May 13, 2015 Although they look good, it seems to me they could be more dynamic: at the moment, they are simply standing on both feet and it is a bit unclear what they do with their arms –are they in a fighting position? If yes, you may want to adopt the corresponding posing for their legs: lokk at photographies of boxers or martial artists for examples... Which scipt do you use to display them in XP style by the way? I'd like to use one for a project
+ Takeo212 1,079 Posted May 26, 2015 I would recommend saving these as PNG's in future. The JPG format makes them look pixelated and unclean, and I honestly think it ruins the quality of your battlers. I honestly really like these, especially the left one. I suggest maybe making there legs a little longer as they look of proportion, but overall, I honestly like how these look.
zerobeat032 2 Posted July 1, 2015 Argh, forgot to follow this... yeah, i'm still rough around the edges with doing these in general. i can draw, but learning from scratch on a computer is different lol. @ Gui... in case you haven't found it yet, here's a link to the topic about portraits in battle.... wait, actually i'm having problems on how to link this lol... http://www.rpgmakervxace.net/topic/31754-show-portraits-in-battle/, sorry if that doesn't work? @ Takeo... i would forget to do that lol. and my friend commented on the legs too, so i've been working on that as well. finally finished May, main female lead...
+ Takeo212 1,079 Posted July 1, 2015 The proportions look much better on your female main. Also, thumbs up for the master ball hoodie If your continuing these, I'd love to see more from you. I understand how hard it is to pixel art too - I am also an artist, but pixel isn't my strong point. Practice makes perfect, eventually lol. What program do you use to draw with? KingKraken 10 Posted July 2, 2015 Pretty great looking sprites! I like size and detail you put into them. I think you could take them much further though! At the moment what stands out to me the most is your lighting. It doesn't really have a clear distinct direction to it, so it's flatting out your characters a good deal!I'm also concerned about a lot of the hard edges on your characters that stand art. What I mean by that is the lines that stay very square and unnatural compared to the rest of of them. Like the decal on your female leads shirt:
zerobeat032 2 Posted July 2, 2015 yeah that was a concern... lol I use Graphicsgale btw. but as for the lighting, I was looking at pics of other characters and kinda fusing them into what ya see now lol. problem is it's easier for me to draw than pixel lol. I got lots to work on
KingKraken 10 Posted July 2, 2015 I get ya! Pixels are a whole new beast to me as well! But as long as you treat your pixels in the same way you would your drawings it'll turn out good! I definitely found a lot of helpful information in this website: http://2dwillneverdie.com/tutorial/
RoseGuardian 42 Posted July 4, 2015 The battle portraits look good. The only thing I would recommend is more dynamic poses.
zerobeat032 2 Posted July 4, 2015 ahh yes, more dynamic poses... that's been an issue for me drawing with a pencil or pixel lol. if ANYONE knows a way to study poses or anything i'm definitely open to it. it's just hard to find time since i'm a one man army with the game at the moment. Art, music, and the actual game. it's been hard dividing time to all 3 aspects lol.
KingKraken 10 Posted July 5, 2015 I think a great way to study poses is look at fighting games. They do a pretty good job at making stances varied from eachother so one persons standing idle, is not the same as anothers.
+ Takeo212 1,079 Posted July 6, 2015 I personally do kickboxing, so I understand alot of the poses and anatomical side of some fighting poses. It helps when you do the activity to get a feel of the pose you want. The second best thing is just google "fight poses" and you'll see different styles of street and martial art stances. I've used a few references myself for practice and it helps. and if you really want to spice it up, get one of your friends to come model for you and use them for perspective and practice. (I made my boyfriend stay in plank/bridge position for 20 minutes once as I sketched him for practice. He wasn't amused afterwards when I said "nope, not good enough" and binned it xD)

zerobeat032 2 Posted July 6, 2015 ok, i'm definitely gonna think on how to go about redoing these to look more dramatic. Adam here , is the latest custom sprite i'll be doing a post of...
KingKraken 10 Posted July 8, 2015 Oh yeah, one thing I wasn't clear of, was how your battle sprites would be placed on the screen. One thing I see in all your sprites thus far is everyone is looking to the left, while their bodies are pointed in the opposite direction! Fighting practicality wise, unless every single one of them is a master of reading movements and dodging, it's kind of awkward to have your main asset(fists or weapons) facing away from your opponents(which I assume are on the left) or not ready to block from the incoming direction.Ofcourse this kind of thing is only important if your doing a side-view battle system. Otherwise forget I said anything! But as far as variation goes, try not to fall into too many same-poses and mix it up in direction!
