Kanonelsebas 7 Posted June 12, 2015 (edited) Hi Everybody! So, after a long time of testing, I managed to finish this 3 maps: A World Map, and a Base and Peak of a Mountain. So, I would like some feedback about how it looks, since are my first "finished" maps and like to improve the next ones I make. Ok, first, the World Map: This is the first map I finished. It uses LemonLures's Realistic Tileset, which I finished Editing the missing areas. I'll attach the edited tileset, in case someone want to use it. Here full Size: And here a few screenshots: Still think that something is Missing on the continents, but didn't want to overcharge it. This is the Second Map I've finished: A Mountain Peak. I'm happy with the results. Although maybe I add some effects, like fog or something like that. I've used tileset created by Celianna. And here a few screenshots: And here's the last map I've finished so far: the Mountain base. I don't like very much the squares bases, so I've edited the floor to make it look like a more natural base. But I Really like the finish result. And here a few screenshots: I like some feedback, If something must be changed o improved, or if it are just fine xD I'll try to update this thread with next maps I make. Thanks for your Attention xD Greetings! Edit: I've Attached the Tilest Originaly posted Here By LemonLures which I edited to add the missing areas. If You use it, credit the Original Author, Limonlures Edit 2: fixed the Links lol Edit 3: New Maps! Abyss: Later in the game the abyss will be filled with water: This is a climbing area: The path avaible to cross by the player, are in the lighted rock. I've tried to make it look like it's the same wall. So I use the shadows to make all combined. I'll Add screenshots In game Later xD Edit 4: New Maps! I re-edited the Climbing Area, so it looks more cohesive. (Thanks Asura for the Advices) Also, I've made another Mountain's Peak, and two caves. Currently working on a Tent's Inside, that I assume, will take me a lot of time xD Climbing Area (Edited) Mountaint Peak 2: Cave 1 Cave 2 Thank you So Much for your feedback Guys! It Really Help to Improve my mapping skills xD I've Attached the Tilest Originaly posted Here By LemonLures which I edited to add the missing areas. If You use it, credit the Original Author, Limonlures Edited September 13, 2015 by Kanonelsebas

Heartfeltcurse 195 Posted June 18, 2015 For the world map, I noticed that there are some areas with a very modern feel, but then areas with a fantasy magic rpg feel (such as a floating island with a old wizardy-looking house on it near a modern complex of some sort.) You also have things like old towers within a half a mile of modern buildings. Is this supported in the lore of your game? if not, I suggest you pick one direction (old/magicky, or modern) and stick with it. besides the clashes between modern and not modern, it look ok, but at one point, near that factory, the road kinda just runs off the continent out into the ocean, creating a very unrealistic effect. Also, the aforementioned floating island looks as though it is floating VERY close to the water. this effect of being close to the water is created by its shadow being so close to it. if you moved the shadow farther down the map, the island would appear to be floating higher, and not look like its ready to crash into the water at any given point in time.
Kanonelsebas 7 Posted June 18, 2015 First of all, thank you very much for the constructive criticism! For the world map, I noticed that there are some areas with a very modern feel, but then areas with a fantasy magic rpg feel (such as a floating island with a old wizardy-looking house on it near a modern complex of some sort.) You also have things like old towers within a half a mile of modern buildings. Is this supported in the lore of your game? if not, I suggest you pick one direction (old/magicky, or modern) and stick with it. The context of the game is in a no-so distant future, where a cataclysm destroyed most of the cities. And some few years later the story begins in the game, So the intention of the modern tilesets was to set it as ruins, and the towers and other "old school" Things are the recently constructed.Maybe i need to edit the tileset so it looks more damaged, ruined style. The Floating Island is the final Dungeon, like the boss lair. So it's intended to be old looking. besides the clashes between modern and not modern, it look ok, but at one point, near that factory, the road kinda just runs off the continent out into the ocean, creating a very unrealistic effect. Thanks for noticing. I'll fix that. I need to edit the roads so it looks more faded. Also, the aforementioned floating island looks as though it is floating VERY close to the water. this effect of being close to the water is created by its shadow being so close to it. if you moved the shadow farther down the map, the island would appear to be floating higher, and not look like its ready to crash into the water at any given point in time. I'll fix that thing with the shadow.Thank you so much for the tips to improve the map! It's really helpful and helped me to spot things that didn't notice before!(Should I post some more maps for this answer don't count as spam?) o.o
KingKraken 10 Posted June 23, 2015 That mountain peak is so clever! I never would of guessed such a perspective could be done so well!
Meinos Kaen 12 Posted July 3, 2015 Very good! I was wondering, the shadow effects in particular are really good. How did you make them?
Kanonelsebas 7 Posted July 3, 2015 Hi! Thanks for the opinions! For the shadows, I used Photoshop, but any image editor would be ok.I make a new layer, then there's two options: Paint the layer all black with the paint bucket. Then erase the parts that contain light. A 100px brush would be fine if the map is big.or Use a large brush (like 100px with blurred edges) and paint the shadows with it.Then, down the opacity of the layer like 69% or so. Just play around with the options until it fits your needs. For Example, in this map: I used a black filled layer, and erased the lighted areas. Later in the game the abyss will be filled with water: Here I erased the lighted areas with a sparkle brush, so it gives the illusion of little spark of light in the water. As the water is below the parallax, (and the tileset water has movement), it gives the feeling that the lights are caused by the moving water This layers of shadows are for parallax only, so they are shown over the player and events. This is a climbing area: The path avaible to cross by the player, are in the lighted rock. I've tried to make it look like it's the same wall. So I use the shadows to make all combined. Thanks a lot for the tips and opinions! This are my first maps, so any advice is welcome. Greetings! / Saludos!
+ Lanakainea 22 Posted July 3, 2015 They look great but that last one is a bit confusing looking. it looks like im looking at it from above if i look at the center but when i look near the bottum it looks like im the same level the top part looks like its falling downwards.
Sugar Hype 2 Posted July 3, 2015 These maps are amazing. I dunno what to say. >.> Nice work.
Kanonelsebas 7 Posted September 7, 2015 (edited) They look great but that last one is a bit confusing looking. it looks like im looking at it from above if i look at the center but when i look near the bottum it looks like im the same level the top part looks like its falling downwards. I see what you mean. I've tried to fix that with more shadow contrast, and erasing some borders to make it more integrated... I think now it looks more coherent. And this is a new map I'm working on. Still missing some details on top, but the rest is over, i think xD Thank you Asura for your observations, and Thank you Sugar Hype for for stopping by. Glad you Liked It! Floki 0 Posted September 8, 2015 (edited) It looks great! I love the map lighting/shadows in the Mountain Base, Abyss, and Mountain Peak. It's what really stands out to me, in a good way, as it brings so much life into the mapping, and I agree with KingKraken; the peak is super neat, with a perfectly matching background. The world map is great too but I do also agree with Heartfeltcurse; There is a bit of a clash between the terrain and modern buildings, but it's not too big of a deal as it looks pretty good regardless. The abyss filling with water has also given me some really good ideas, thanks! Edited September 8, 2015 by Floki
Kanonelsebas 7 Posted September 13, 2015 Thank you very much Floki for your comments. I'm glad you like my maps. I'm still looking for a way to fix the world map. For me it also lacks something, perhaps smaller buildings, or some texture to give more life. I share three new maps that I just finished. Another mountain peak, and two caves. Mountaint Top 2: Cave 1 Cave 2 Try as much as possible to avoid straight edges, because I think that strip coherence and integration from the maps in general, and perhaps I use too many shadows lol. Lanterns and bonfires are events, and in game, the light they give off is a little less bright. I hope you like them! Greetings!!
+ Lyla 41 Posted September 15, 2015 Hey Kanon! I want to start off saying, you seem to have a definite grasp of parallax mapping and I am very much enjoying flipping through the maps. There's definitely some ideas and tricks that I see that make me go, "ooo, that's clever!" However, the part that confuses me across almost all of them is the shadows. I took a minute or so to highlight areas on your map, both good and bad with some points below; • Black: I get what you're trying to do here, but those lighter areas look like they are merging with the rock formations. If you're using shadows to create depth in the cliffs, I think it makes more sense to make those shadows different shades than the ground and rock formations. • Red: Again, I understand what you're trying to do, but this whole big area here confuses me the most. This is probably because you were trying to mix two different directions of cliff faces, but it doesn't quite work. Maybe try and see if you can separate them instead of merging them? Off the top of my head, I'm not sure if you could pull that off or if it's even mimiced in real life or not. Honestly, I'd have to study and play around myself to see what could be done, haha. • Purple: Similar to red, but it's a bit of a different issue. You're going from trying to make it a forward perspective (the top) to a side perspective (bottom) and it just seems a bit odd... though not many people even do advanced shadows this well, so... • Green: These are some of the best parts, I think and you've done an excellent job. This part makes it easy for me to hypothesis what you're trying to do with the rest of the map... and honestly, they're shadow tricks that I think I'm going to take away from this. You're really good and it's obvious from everyone else's comments here, though there are some strange things (to me anyways) that could be looked at closer. Also some of the maps, it's hard to tell where the light source is coming from, if you're trying to do that... but again, everyone seems to like them, so you could probably totally ignore me / write me off and still be really successful, hehe. ^.^
Rikifive 3,411 Posted September 15, 2015 Whoa, that's a great work there! Your maps are neat and well done! (= Though I agree a bit with these shadows, sometimes they look kinda weird - it's like a random line made with a brush. =P
Kanonelsebas 7 Posted September 16, 2015 Thank you so much Lydyn for taking the time to highlight those errors! I see what you mean, and I'm gonna try to fix it. I think I kinda know how to make things more coherent. I really appreciate your feedback! Really helpful! Thank you! it's like a random line made with a brush. =P You've discovered my secret! Now I have to kill you ⊂•⊃_⊂•⊃ Just Kidding! xD Thank you Rikifive for taking the time to comment! I really appreciate! As soon as I fix the maps I'll Update the post. Thank You all for the help to improve my mapping. Greetings!!
