You know, I’ve been a part of this community for years, upon years, and I just realized something… I have never completed a project. Well, screw that! Time for that to change with this beauty! It’s called, Breathwind: Return of the Dragons. This game will be released in an Episodic Format. It is developed by The Ninth Life Games.

recruiting.png

Mostly right now I need an Artist to do sylistic panels for the cutscenes (these would be without color with tan style backgrounds, think pencil drawn style).

I need mappers as well.

I'm also looking for beta testers to test the game during ongoing development, just to give me some feedback on what I'm doing as I go.

story.png

1300 years ago, the Dragons returned to the land of Breathwind. They had left thousands of years earlier, seeking refuge as their numbers dwindled during the First Dragon War. They returned to seek revenge and accomplish they goal they started. A young man rose from a desperate situation, accused of a crime he did not commit, and saved Breathwind by assembling an army to repel them. He became a legendary historical figure who is now simply referred to as the Hero of Old.

He formed the Dragon Riders, a group of Peacekeepers, Diplomats, Artists, and more... all skilled in fighting, yet always trying to protect the land.

300 years ago. The Hero of Old's legacy, the Dragon Riders, were destroyed when a desperate Meathran, leader of the Dragon Riders, used the energy of all of them to strike down a new threat. A Celestial Force who had come to wipe out all life... a self-proclaimed God of Darkness. Yet when he was struck down, he was only locked back in his vessel.

Now, the Celestial Force is on the brink of escaping his vessel, and just in time... a new hope has risen to protect the land. A young boy by the name of Adam has found the last Dragon Egg, one protected by the Dragon Oslo (the Dragon of Meathran) from the spell that killed the rest of the Dragons. It hatched for him, revealing Morgan, who has all of the memories of Oslo and is full size due to accelerated aging.

A prophecy predicts their fall.

A Rider Smith exists to train them.

Darkness is descending upon the land.

Will they be able to find the power to strike down the Celestial Force before it is too late?

world.png

Return of the Dragons takes place in Breathwind, a continent that contains a wide variety of environments.

For a Millennium, the Dragon Riders kept the peace between Breathwind’s Three Nations. In addition to keeping the peace, they also protected the world from evil and crime. They helped the needy and protected those who could not protect themselves.

The fall has come and left the world to it's own devices.

Because people do not understand or comprehend the whole story, Meathran and Oslo are generally viewed with scorn for being responsible for the death of the riders and Breathwind’s current political situation.

The Three Nations Windma, which is composed of the Northern Mountains and the Highlands, Breathill, which is composed of the forests and grasslands of the south, and Ilanza, which is composed of several islands near the mainland in the West... are close to war.

Since the death of the riders, the Three have slowly drifted apart. The Council of Three established by the riders to keep the peace has turned into a political game to find out what the others are doing. The Nations have become extremely secretive of each other and bicker over resources.

None of the nations have a standing army since military conflict has not been necessary for the last 1300 years. Weapons are now primarily made for hunting, self-defense, and for the Doranza.

The Doranza are an international multi-branch police force set-up by the riders to bring the Nations closer together. But even this has been divided, as the branches of each nation no longer interact with each other or work together.

Tensions are growing with no end in sight.

These are all that I can put in for now, further characters will be added as I develop the games story.

Names: Meathran & Oslo

Titles: Grandmaster of the Riders & Oslo of the Red Sands

Bio: Meathran lived in a small village near the mountains as a child. He became a rider after entering a cave in spite of the fears of his friends. Alone, he found a small glowing red stone. But as he made to leave the cave with it, he was attacked by monsters. He attempted to run and defend the stone from them but failed, just as death seemed inevitable for the young Meathran.

The stone started shining a blinding red light and Meathran accidentally let it go… but before the stone could hit the ground, the light died down and a small red dragon landed upon the ground. He leapt into action and attacked the monsters to defend Meathran. Even as small as he was, he made quick work of the monsters and then turned back to Meathran.

At first Meathran feared the creature, backing up away from it. But it followed after him playfully with a draconic smile, and when it became clear to Meathran the creature was not hostile, he reached out and touched its snout.

Energy surged through Meathran and his very being. The blinding red light returned at the end of Meathran’s hand. In his mind, Meathran heard the word Oslo repeated over and over again, and realized it was the dragon’s name, and then he fell unconscious.

He woke up some time later on his stomach. The dragon was curled up next to him with his wing stretching protectively over Meathran.

He felt different, and he could feel another presence in his mind. The dragon woke and Meathran picked it up and carried it outside.

He realized soon after that he could hear the dragon’s thoughts, and suddenly remembered the dragons name was Oslo. Oslo could hear his thoughts as well.

Meathran brought the dragon back to his village to the wonder of his friends and parents.

Over the next few months, Meathran raised the dragon. He taught him English and they got to know each other. After the ninth month, Riders arrived in the village and took Meathran and Oslo for training.

Meathran was a natural swordsman and magician, as all riders became spellcasters with their link to their dragon.

Oslo was a natural flier and began breathing fire sooner than other dragons usually did.

Meathran and Oslo finished their training on the dawn of Meathran’s 16th birthday, more than four years earlier than the usual rider and dragon. They both advanced quickly through the ranks, and by the age of twenty, Meathran was leading his own squad of riders.

One of Meathran’s first assignments as a squad leader was to settle a dispute between two tribes in the eastern desert. It turned out that leaders within both were Shapeshifting monsters driving the two towards war. While his squad mates handled the fighting at the camps, Meathran and Oslo had to follow the ones who escaped back to the place where the sands grow red, which is where monsters of the desert are born.

They were surrounded by monsters, but thanks to Oslo’s superior combat skills, they managed to escape. Oslo was given the title “of the Red Sandsâ€.

Several years later, Meathran earned the close friendship of the Grandmaster of the Dragon Riders. He became the Grandmaster’s pupil and agent as the Grandmaster was old and needed someone to handle things for him.

When the Grandmaster died, the traditional tournament for the leadership began. Meathran became the first asked to join the tournament. Fifteen more were admitted.

Meathran and Oslo ended up victorious. But in the Grand Melee, Meathran’s eye was damaged by a sword. From then on, he was forced to wear an Eyepatch to cover the wound. After the tournament, Meathran became the Grandmaster of the Riders.

Decades passed peacefully, but during the Star Shower, which occurs once per Century and is a storm of shooting stars, one of the stars hit the top of a Mountain in the Heart Mountains near the center Breathill. People who investigated found a small glowing jagged green stone that made the air close by riddled with evil.

The stone had cleaved the peak of the mountain off, revealing it to be an active volcano.

Two weeks after the collision, monsters began infesting the mountain. Eventually they started spreading into the lands around it, slaughtering whole Mountain Towns. Refugee’s called upon the riders to liberate their homes.

Meathran had his director of operations, John, send riders to investigate. They never checked in and never returned. He dispatched a second group to find the first group, but they never returned either.

Nervous about the growing trouble, Meathran and Oslo decided to investigate themselves. They had to fight their way up the mountain, and soon found the stone... contained within the stone turned out to be an evil Celestial Force. They attempted to fight it, but soon recognized the hopelessness of fighting such a great power.

Realizing the amount of danger to the world, Oslo drew in the power of all of the Dragons and used it to direct a magical attack in an attempt to destroy the Celestial Force. It didn’t work; it merely pressed the Force back into its stone.

Oslo’s use of the Dragons power destroyed the dragons, and through their links, all of the riders… including him and Meathran. As they died, Oslo and Meathran reached out and protected one of the eggs from the trauma. They never knew if they had succeeded or not, but they knew they had at least bought the world precious time to prepare.

Unfortunately, the world did not know that Meathran and Oslo had failed.

Personality: Meathran: Heroic, Honest, Confident

Oslo: Brash, Overconfident, Strong

No offense intended but the mapping could use a bit of work. Some of your cliffs blend in a bit too much, and the carpeting in that library or office doesn't look right with the borders around the bookshelves. The story itself sounds similar to the book Eragon.

The story is similar to Eragon because of my desire for an Eragon video game. I am a huge fan of Inheritance, so I borrowed a few concepts. But the story does have its own identity as well. Morgan would be Saphira's counterpart, but that's already different because Morgan is a guy dragon. There is also three nations instead of two, and these nations aren't at outright war, they're in a bad attitude since the fall of the riders.

A false king didn't kill the riders, a Celestial Force did. You can draw parallels, but just because I borrowed a few concepts doesn't mean the story is going to be Eragon.

I admit that my mapping does need work, I'm going to revise a few of the shadows to make the bookcases place more realistically. I'm a terrible mapper, so forgive me. Also, I am honest to god not sure how to make my cliffs look better. There was no optimal way to construct that path from the beginning, I did my best with what I had. Honestly, practice makes perfect so I might as well work on making my mapping look better, :)

I'm primarily a writer, not a mapper, so that's my primary problem... >.<

Also, to my credit, I've written a huge amount of Eragon fanfiction, so I do good with this style of writing.

You can check out that fanfiction here if you would like: http://www.fanfiction.net/~obrusnine

Yes, this project is like Eragon's Doujin (With just some rename I guess? :|)

And the mapping isn't good if you ask me (Agree with you Ignasis), in fact, you said that you've been working with RPG Maker for sometimes, but the map makes me feel like you are just only a beginner

General Advice with your mapping:Watch some tutorials out there, it doesn't need to be parallax mapping, you just need to watch traditional mapping tutorials to at least know how to blend stuff in, thus, it will help you get a general idea of how to design an environment and how to at least, place stuffs, I don't want and I won't comment anything about your maps right now, but surely, you'll need to improve them a lot, unless it's a game you are trying to make for the sake of making

Story: A glitch point you have to fix:

The Stone turns out to be the last remaining dragon egg, and it hatches for him. As it hatches, the monsters come into the cave and attack him. The dragon defends him from the monsters.

Okay, now that's stupid. A new-born bird cannot fly yet, can it? A new-born chicken can't walk on it's own yet, can it? And a human can't walk right away right after the moment he was born can he? Then how the hell a new-born dragon could walk on it's own,and eventually defend a person? It should be the person defend the dragon. That will of course, bolden the bonds between the dragon and the person, make more sense for the bonds between them. Thus, if you make the story like that, then that person is a fool, wandering into a cave full of monsters without the ability to defend himself. If you still want to keep that glitch, then maybe you should add Stupid to the main character's personality

This is going to be explained in-game, as I'm going to be designing a Mass Effect/Dragon Age style Codex to the thing but here's the explanation.

Dragons were originally extremely territorial and wild creatures before melding with Humanity. Because of this, all dragons are born with basic combat instincts that allow them to defend themselves. They are also born ready to hunt, allowing them to provide for themselves regardless if the parents are around or not.

Dragons, being magical creatures, are able to be born with traits such as these while natural creatures are not because the parents pass on a limited amount of knowledge through memories.

I again say that I am a terrible mapper, always have been, always will be. Unless I get tons of practice.

I have owned RMVX/RMVX Ace for many years but I have never truly used it to it's full extent until now. So I again ask you to forgive my bad mapping. The game will come with a great story regardless so please try not to be so aggressive.

Now, as I just explained, the story draws parallels with Eragon but is still it's own story.

I would also like to add that unlike other game worlds, monsters are not common in Breathwind. This is a world where one typically does not need to carry around a sword and defend oneself from the supernatural. Adam is able to defend himself actually, he carries a short sword with him, but he is pushed into overwhelming odds and must hide in the cave to escape them.

Charizard! I choose you! <spoish!!> sorry... that was fun for me! yep yep, put some more time into your maps, get creative, look at other peoples work and see what looks interesting and what doesnt. your maps need improvement, but I like your story, dont worry, i havn't seen eragon so your story is new to me :)

lol, thanks for the encouragement! Everyone else seems to be trying to shoot me down, >.<

Anyways, like I said I only borrowed a few plot elements from the Inheritance Cycle (the book series Eragon is from). The story isn't some crazy identical copy, it's its own original story.

For the last time, I admit my maps are total shit.

On the plus side, I just completed the entire introduction after spending all day on it! Wow does some cool shit go down.

I'm going to upload a demo as soon as I can, the Introduction is Dungeon number 1, so we're 25 percent of the way to the demo! :D

I go for a minimum of at least 4 dungeons in my demos, :D

Also don't worry, I think Oslo looks like Charizard to, lol

Thanks!

The only reason the cliff's don't look natural is because the tops of them are grass. I had to substitute out for something different.

There are no resources built for climbing the side of gray imposing mountains...

Once you see the maps after the introduction, you will like, :D

Maybe recruit some people to make your maps for you. I have time. Send me screenshots of what maps you have and I will totally revamp them for ya.

You are brave for posting your map screen shots. I for one would never post a screenshot of my maps unless I was 100% positive I knew I would impress others. Just like proof reading for writers..do the same for all the jobs in making a game.

PM me if you would like some help.

The story line is like Eragon. But you know what, At least it isn't another save the damn princess game. Keep at it.

Yea, I just responded to your PM and I would be glad to let you help me out (LIFESAVER! lol).

I'm compressing the project files for you now and uploading them. Sorry it took me so long to reply, I was bug-testing the introduction.

I was trying to drag you down lol just give helpful criticism. Honestly I've only watched the Eragon movie which IMO was horrendous.

As with most things the first impression is the most important, so I would take Syrus' advice and work on those screens, I've worked with him on some stuff he does good work.

I honestly don't see what people didn't like about the Eragon move (a lot of Inheritance fans were disappointed with it to...) but the books are MUCH better.

You should read them, they're excellent books.

What's funny is that I would never have read the books without the movie... so... lol

btw, you WERE trying to drag me down? lol

Just a few updates for everyone.

I've decided to release this game in an episodic format. Syrus Ultima is editing my maps so that you can put your bad mapping axes away now, hm?

Anyways, after Syrus is done and I've bug tested it... the Introduction section will be released. Considering I'm intimately familiar with the layout and can sprint through the entire thing in almost ten minutes, I can't give an accurate estimation of how long it will be... but it's not very long. It's just the introductory sequence, a short dungeon, a few mini-bosses, and then a boss to cap it off.

I'm going to estimate it at about an hour.

Further chapters are going to be much longer though, so don't worry. When I'm done with all of the chapters, I'll smash them together into one complete game.

Erm, anyways, I've decided to also work on extended universe fiction for this game. I'll post the link after I've written up the prologue (I'm 2000 words in, I'm aiming for like 6000, so I'm thinking the end of the day maybe?).

The Extended Fiction for Breathwind: Return of the Dragons is here in the form of Breathwind: Dragonslayer, which takes place 1300 years before Adam begins his adventure. While extended fiction, it's a great story in it's own right. You can read it here.

Lots of things to look forward to, :)

I think your map ned more DETAILS!

It's to por...

And you know what? I think i know this games some where...

Do you steal the idea?

All the maps are being re-done by me. I joined Niko's team because rather than everyone telling him his maps are poor I thought I would help the guy rather than say something that isn't going to help with anything at all. In time Niko will update his Original Post and share the new map screen shots. I am not the greatest mapper either but, every mapper has his own opinion on what should and shouldn't be done in a map. I like my coffee with cream and sugar, some like theirs black.

@ ergz - You have some nice parallax'd maps. I however do not make parallax maps. I just thought I would bring this up because you were telling Niko to look at your maps for ideas.. To parallax map, one needs to learn how to map in general. His maps will not be as fancy with parallax clutter but rather nice and clean looking. I have nothing against Parallax maps. I just think it is a waist of my time.

No, I did borrow some elements from my favorite book series though.

I'm taking a stab here, but I'm guessing you're favorite book series is Inheritance? :)

This appears to be coming along quite nice, though, and we all have to take the plunge in showing off a game somewhere. Best of look to you.

Thanks Amerk!

If you think THAT is coming out nicely, I have 2000 words of the games Codex written, and a 6500 word chapter for Breathwind: Dragonslayer written. I am really thickening this games backstory, moving it much farther from an Inheritance clone (which people seem to think it is for some reason?). It also won't have that crappy ending Christopher Paolini wrote for that idiotic final book...

A lot has been going on since I started this project to, I work on it every day, so I hope some borrowed plot elements don't put people off, :(

This thing has a really thick backstory. Seriously, check the bottom of my Dragonslayer first chapter. I did a chapter edit and I added a ton of Future Reference material on the bottom. How magic works, what are the differences between the nations, what their religions are, how their government functions, how the nations came to be, how time is measured...

Next I'm going to add specific historical figures and locations, such a Alain Mountain and Alain Town, or Adam... or Meathran... The people that form Breathwind's history.

i think that is very good story, but the only thing that i don't like are the maps, they are SO simple, i don't want to play a game with basics maps even if the story is good, the first thing that you see in a game is graphics and after that the story... keep work in that story and change the maps ;)

I had someone edit my maps, they look much better now. Although, I have to admit my screenshots aren't very extensive. But the game is still in-production.

Geez, even when the maps get an upgrade I get heat, >.>

Anyways, the mapping doesn't need to be any more then simple. This is a very story focused game.

Everybody is going to be different when it comes to resources, and you can only do so much. Take the feedback, do what you can with it, and then focus on completing the game. There is a difference between very bland and open maps, and simple maps fitting a more retro appeal. Some people like simplicity, which is why they choose VX and VX Ace, whereas others want something more, and you won't be able to please everybody.

The one thing I will advise is to not put all your effort into graphics until you've got the core of the game designed. The reason being is if you stop to fix every mapping critique, you may burn yourself out and give up on the game. So again, take the advice and fix the obvious things, but also focus on finishing the game first before making the eye candy tweaks.

That's what I was thinking Amerk, thanks!

I concentrate more on functional mapping then pretty mapping. I need to make sure the game itself is intact as an experience before I make it look good. I've gotten the story done for Episode 0 (as a previous post said, I am switching to an episodic format), most of the mapping is done, I'm working on acquiring useful scripts and additions now. You can all expect Breathwind: Return of the Dragons Episode 0: Death of Honor to be coming soon, :)
